Syracuse GAME Thread

Just got back from the Garden.

Any negative talk about this game is pure nonsense. They went toe to toe with the #2 team in the country for nearly the entire game. They fell behind in the 1st half only because of poor shooting, nothing more. They fought back and had the Garden rocking. They ran out of steam at the foul line, ironic because they were 17 for 20 when Sampson stepped to the line for two.

Nothing to be embarrassed about, and plenty to look forward to. Our team is just as talented as theirs. We will be playing in March.

Ran out of steam from the foul line? I didn't know the game was played in Denver. Sampson sat with 4 fouls, then came in and clank, clank. He was well rested. That followed a Sanchez miss and preceded a 1 of 2 for Harrison. Almost every possession down the stretch was ugly. Yes, the team played 15 minutes of great basketball. Too bad the game is 40 minutes long. The facts are that we will likely be 8 and 3 heading into conference play without a single true road game under our belt. How many games will we be underdogs in on the road? Probably 9 of the 11 games. Need to nearly run the table at home. A tough task. Yes, we put together 15 really strong minutes in a game that meant more to this group than any game they have played. The effort was there. The passion was there. Then, with the game on the line, they reverted to old habits. This team just doesn't have a lot of margin for error. They need to continue to imrpove to have a shot at the tourney.

Things I liked today:

1. Jordan showed he needs to be on the Court for heavy minutes.
2. I liked greene on the bench for whole 2nd half. 1 for 9 shooting for phil. ugh.

Things needing work:

1. harrison was 6-20 fg, 1-7 3pt shooting. That's not a game winner.
2. Team shooting was 21-59 for 35%
3. 3pt shooting was 1-17 that's below CYO LEVEL FOR 4TH GRADERS.

TERRIBLE;

1. Free throw shooting in the clutch sucked.cost us the game .
2/Defense unable to make stops at crunch time

We made a potential blow out a game but, you have to finish. moral victory? Nah.

Syracuse make many teams shoot poorly. We, occasionally, too some poor shots, but overall we did a good job getting decent looks.

BS! Another one of your ways to not give the team much credit. You wonder why I gave you a particular moniker a week ago.

Am I for moral victories? Not at all. I think it stinks that we lost today. But we made this more than "a game." We had Syracuse on their heels, and had several opportunities to win it.

I believe we're gonna be alright going forward.

let's see you have 4203 posts and only 440 thank you's? that's about 10.4%

I have only 372 posts but, 54 thank you's for a 14.5 % ratio.

You should either post less or up your ratio of people who think what you are saying makes sense.

I'm fine with what Dinkins' posts and I think you're mainly a J@ck@ss. If they had J@ck@ss votes, I'm pretty sure you'd win.

It's apparent Lavin will not play MAX or Marco any meaningful minutes. Why wasn't HOOPER on the floor for some late shooting, instead of Dom?

I can't understand why some posters believe that Hooper (a 2 ** player out of high school who sat on an Ivy roster in favor of non scholarship teammates) can play in the Big East. Hopefully the time will come when fans understand that Hooper is not a high level player.

Then why did we give him a scholarship when we could have held it for someone like Jon Severe?

Very proud of our effort today. As Beast correctly stated, we went head to head with the number 2 team in the country. If we make our free throws late we probably win this game. Syracuse didn't win this game, we lost it. As for all of the Syracuse talk that they were going to roll over us, well considering the final score, either we are a very good team or they are a very bad team.

I think they are overrated and we are an on the bubble NCAA team.

I don't think Hooper got off a shot today . Why was he running the baseline against the three trees in the Syracuse 2-3 . Put him up toward the elbow where he would be shooting against smaller players and getting more touches

He cannot play at the elbow. The holes in the zone were at the FT line where Karr and Sanchez were and the baseline corners where Max was. He 'could' have touched the ball there but not sure he would have gotten a shot off. They knew why he was in there and were cheating towards him.

Well let me ask you Otis, is Hooper here on scholarship? If so then why did Lavin gives ships to him and Marco, to sit on the bench?

Now on the game, had the ball and up 2 in the second half WE HAD THOSE F`ERS DAMN IT.
Why can`t we play in the first half like we play in the second. Rather start the second half with the game maybe down 5 or 6 rather then 12 then fight our way back in the game in the seconds, and why can`t we trap all 40minutes? We have the depth no?

I was there in section 220, it was all Cuse fans up there. I was standing, clapping, and yelling my lungs out, while looking to both sides of me watching all those cuse fans looking all worried. I had to laugh.
I`m one of the most intense SJU fans. Though in the end those sob`s got us OH WELL.

On to the next.

He didn't do a good job of getting open for a shot, which as you pointed out, is not going to happen with him running the baseline. He needs Branch or Jordan in the game with him so someone is looking to get him the ball, but if he can't get free, he need to sit. He'll get better as we go, but is still searching for his role.

Tough loss but I will focus on the positives:

1) Jordan has arrived. We will be in good hands for the rest of the season
2) Great 2nd half. The GT game and this game showed me that we can make adjustments and stage comebacks
3) The passing is so much better
4) The crowd was loud and (from what I could tell) felt more SJU than Cuse. I was expecting it to be heavily Cuse since they won't be at MSG and instead will be playing road games in those hotbed towns of Clemson SC and Blacksburg, Virginia.
No positives. No quality wins. Right now we are not even a NIT team. Who in the league we gonna beat down the stretch. X-men ain't laying down, and neither is Creighton. So far we shown we can beat Bucknell. The better teams in the league beat us. It's not the coaching. At some point the players must take the game. I thought a old hand like Sanchez might give D"lo a hand in big spots. Has not happened. Jordan got to the rim, and hit his foul shots. I found something good.

Seriously? You are declaring that this team is "not even an NIT team" in mid december? Xavier ain't laying down? why do you say that, cause they beat Cincinatti? Cincy isn't quite Syracuse or Wisconsin. Creighton isn't lying down? What have they done that is so remarkable? We have had two oppurtunities to get a quality win against top 5 teams and we lost both in close games. The quality wins will come, and so will an NCAA tournament bid if they play like they are down 40 minutes a game.

Our problem against Wisconsin, Penn State, and Syracuse were the first halves.

Against Wisconsin, down by 12 at half

Against PSU, down by 7 at half

Against Cuse, down by 12 at half

We then have to play catch up in the second half, and then fall apart in the final five minutes. This team has to make half court adjustments, it has to play better in firts halves, and also has to finish games better, but if you can seriosuly say this team is not even NIT after the game today, I question you're sanity. This team is gonna be fine in conference play, I expect 10/11/12 wins. You want a quality win? December 31st @ Xavier and then just five days later @ Georgetown. And MANY more oppurtunities to come for quality wins. There are a lot of tournament teams out there who lack a "quality win" in mid december, there's three more months left in the season! We should lock Redmen.com for at least five hours after losses, cause some people post some crazy stuff all because their upset. Take a deep breath, we are gonna be fine...

Thread is hilarious. Anyways,

@jeffborzello: St. John's expects to have Isaiah Briscoe, Adonis Delarosa, Devonte Green, Kassoum Yakwe and Cheick Diallo on campus tonight.

This is worthy of many karma.

Better late than never. ... Was there a Briscoe sighting at the game? If so, hope his body language suggested he was pulling for us.

Whoops :)

Ignore then por favor.

Briscoe was there. Spent more time on his phone than on the game.

I don't think it was the free throw shooting or lack of execution down the stretch that cost us this game. I think it was those 3 baseline jumpers that Fair hit in critical points in the game. Actually, those may have been the biggest plays of the game. They were all solid defense by Dom, but Fair was a straight up stud and nailed those shots. The first one came with just under 7mins to go, after Jordan had just made two freebies to put us 2. We had all the momentum in the world, and he hit the shot to tie the game and silence the crowd. The 2nd was with 3mins to go to put them up 4 at 64-60. And the final one came at the 1:41 mark, which put them up 5 at 66-61. The last one pretty much put the game out of reach for us. He misses one or two of those, and its a different game.

Well, the team on the floor today could not throw the ball onto 8th Avenue today.. Presumably Hooper can hit something but, can't score from the bench..

We haven't had any jump shooter at all, since HARDY...Certainly you would hope somebody can get a shooter a look by passing him the ball in his scoring zone?

Most kids who can shoot find their spots and their teammates get them the ball...
