Syracuse Game Thread

I hated the color guy. Wanted to stick an ice pick in my ears[/quote]

Dan Dakich was an Indiana player under Bob Knight. Distinct gravelly voice. Coached at Bowling Green to a so so record, however he took the West Virginia head coach job after Gale Catlett. Never signed a contract and was their a week when he abruptly quit due to improprieties. Story about him trying to squeeze UWV for more money but then left back to Bowling Green. I believe Belein then became the coach.

The game was disappointing but what got me sick was listening to the two commentators on tv. They couldnt stop talking about Cuse and their players. It was almost as if they were being paid by Cuse which they probably were

Dave Pasch is a Cuse grad.

Our Communications Dept. needs to turn out some college basketball announcers !

This is very true. The airwaves are full of Cuse grads waxing poetically about their loving Alma mater.

Amazing amountof Syracuse, ND and Fordham grads in sports broadcasting. Wonder what's in their secret sauce ??

We need a leader on the floor. Harrison could be that guy but his decision making recently has not been great. He was very good in that stretch this year where he was doing other things aside from scoring. Outside of him, potentially Branch. Jakarr is probably the best player on the team ,but maybe too young to lead at this point. I agree with other posters that Greene is reluctant to pass to Bourgault. I'm not sure why. Marco is a real threat and we needed to use him that way especially against a zone. Syracuse did a good job with drawing our defenders with the dribble to pass to the open man within our zone. We need to learn how to do that too.

Harrison is not a leader and never will be. For all those who love to now call me his caddy for my defending on him I've been on record saying that from the beginning of the year when all that talk from Lavin about Dee not be a leader popped up. Just because he is our best offensive threat and leading scorer doesn't mean he has to be a leader. I wish most of the posters (not you) would realize that.

No secret. It has been public knowledge for half a century.
SU's Newhouse is first class. Fordham is first class. At St. John's you have to be one of 50 students listening on WSJURADIO to hear a broadcast---on campus only! LOL!
At Fordham, you could be on the Jersey shore and listen to a first rate WFUV.

the superior team won yesterday bottome line, there is still a nice gap between us and the upper echelon!!

We can talk individual talent all we want but this team remmains one with NO chemistry. Our backcourt play is beyond horrible and name me one player who played HARD yesterday, who left it all on the court. We have no leaders and why we played zone is beyond me; guys standing around waving their arms, no fire, no committment. The hardest we see most of this team play is when they have the ball in their hand, that does not and never will win.

Syracuse has the #1 communications school in the country, st johns had too many years asleep at the wheel relying solely on the law school, and no dorms. we are playing catch up in many different ways.

most of these schools are very highly regarded research institutions for many many fields, which brings the best talent to teach, more money and better facilities.

No doubt about it, but I still would've liked to see Branch on the floor against Syracuse. The guard play yesterday was at times unwatchable. I feel like Branch would've attacked the zone a lot more than what we saw.

St. John's will try and catch up. They are up to date in TV broadcasting and tier 3 rights could come into play. I believe this is part of the FOX offer.

I agree, Hope he is ready for Louisville.

If Branch plays yesterday, I think we would have had a shot at making it much more interesting. These guys came back and got it to 5 behind. This team is much better when Branch is on the floor. But their 3 point shooting was just too good...so we still would have lost IMO.

If we land a top pg next year, GG plays and everyone else stays...well that is what we are all hoping for. Fingers are crossed.

I was in Newhouse - it is as good as advertised. Everyone who does sports there wants to be the next Bob Costas.

I agree about the D. I was screaming at my TV to switch to man. They were wide open on their 3 looks. Why not at least switch it up for a few possessions, unreal.

Wondering. Do you think Branch isn't a PG then?

I'm fully convinced that Jordan is not coming here next year. Nor do I think he is the answer. I see him as a more polished Phil Greene. We don't need that. We need a PG that can penetrate and dish. If Branch can develop into that, give him the keys to the car.

I think if everyone comes back, we can be Top 3-5 in the conference. We totally miss Gift's rebounding this year. I think we win the Nova game with Gift on the floor to combat Pinkston. Gift got knocked so often last year but his natural position is PF. If he is sandwiched between Obekpa and Jakarr, that is as formidable a frontline that you'll find in the Big East, hands down.

Sampson's game has improved the most over the course of the season. He's got the most talent on the team and has taken over as the major offensive player.. He's a NBA player but, still needs work on his long jumper, handle, passing, etc.. He could use another year at SJU but, we all know the pros will draft on potential,i.e. Harkless last season, case in point. So we will see what his advisers tell him. I hope Lebron tells him to stay in school 1 more year.

Harrison has deteriorated from the beginning of the season and looks frustrated in not hitting his shots and as a result, is chucking the ball up without much success. He's not a NBA player now and probably isn't going to be. Europe maybe. This will shock many but,he was a distraction on the Court yesterday and frankly, he needs to mature as a player. Maybe it happens next year, maybe not..I don't see his leaving as a obstacle that can't be overcome.. Look at the CELTICS, withour Rondo.. They haven't lost a game..Sometimes the chemistry on the Court transcends any individual player's contribution. His demeanor on the Court all season has been very poor. I wonder if Lavin has given up on him?

I still see raggedy play from this Group as a team , not too much better than earlier in the year. They can beat mid pack BE teams but, as we've seen thru G'town, Syracuse, etc not ready to challenge the top tier..Sampson's improvement has been instrumental in winning most games in the BE season, the rest of the team is pretty much what they were earlier. Pointer has had moments but, disappears too.

Our Zone is terrible as a defensive strategy and I see no improvement in this team's ability to play it..That's almost 2 full years of the team playing it.. I think, even the most optimistic fans would agree it's not effective for this group. They collectively, don't seem interested in applying the intensity it requires. I'm not being negative, just seeing what occurs on the Court. We poorly defended against the 3 again and Syracuse makes you pay every time.

Even factoring Branch's absence, we still have little clue how to attack against a Zone and no one yesterday could or would dribble penetrate. The turnovers too, were critical. Other than Branch, neither Greene, DLO, Dom, Garrett have good handles and the turnovers showed that.

Greene, in particular, does little on defense, shoots poorly, dribbles incessantly without purpose and should be a bench, role player. And, it's beyond noticeable that he doesn't pass to Marc A. In a team environment, that can't be left unaddressed.

Not having any backup at PG THIS YEAR, is a result of poor recruiting with Lindsay last season.. Lavin's initial recruiting plan had him leading the point for 2 years.. That's a big ingredient in poor guard play this year. Getting Branch from A&M was a make-up for Lindsay being a bad choice. But, waiting half a season and now with his injury, it has set us back as a team.

I call them as I see them and if it doesn't sit well with others, that's ok.

A few thoughts:

1. We really don't have a pure PG. Branch is as close to one as we have, but he looks for his shot more than he looks to pass
2. If Sampson is truly a mid-1st round pick this spring, I can't imagine him staying another year. Would you?
3. Harrison's poor attitude/demeanor on the court does not reflect well on our team/school. It bothers me a lot.
4. Greene is not a starting BE player IMO. He should be playing about 10 minutes/game
5. Why does Balamou play at all?
6. We miss GG more than most people would admit
7. I wish Christian Jones would get more PT. I think he has the potential to be helpful in the future.
