Syracuse and the Garden

I have received a number of telephone calls from acquaintances who are fans of Syracuse University fans who called me to express their pleasure and thanks with Mr. Monasch's decision to schedule SU on what may be yearly games in Madison Square Garden.

The SU fans believe it is important for their school's reputation as "New York's Team" to maintain a continued presence in Madison Square Garden.

The fans belief in the importance of maintaining the Garden as a home is recited in the LINKED article:
......... "Playing in New York gives Syracuse a chance to cultivate its image as “New York’s College Team.’’ But it also gives Syracuse a chance to stake its claim to the area’s recruiting grounds.

..........."Syracuse senior James Southerland, a native of Queens, said the Orange’s games at the Garden influenced his decision to come to Syracuse. If Syracuse didn’t make regular appearances in New York, Southerland said he might not have chosen the Orange. I would have known who they were (Syracuse University) but I wouldn't have exactly felt the love they get when they come to Madison Square Garden,’’ Southerland said. “MSG is like a home game for them, especially with the fan base in New Jersey, New York."

I understand that St.John's cannot stop Madison Square Garden from bringing in Syracuse University for games but by refusing to schedule them then SU would be forced to schedule out of town teams which would not give them the New York flavor. My belief was advanced by former SU Athletic Director Jake Crothemal who preached to the Big East schools that they should refuse to boycott Boston College, UMiami and VaTeck after those three schools left the BEast for the ACC. Crothemal argued that by denying the 3 departed schools games the Big East helped make them less relevant in their home recruiting areas.

as long as we play them every year at the Garden I'm happy to have it part of the season ticket package. I have no interest in playing them at the dome

I hope that, real soon, we can compete with them. The most painful losses for me in the past 6-7 years have been to Syracuse. I hate them and was hoping we would never schedule them again.

Agree totally with you. Wherever we go, we will always have some trouble finding super teams to fill out our mid- season schedule. Since we have played the best of the ACC, Duke, over the last many years, I would not settle for Syracuse in trade for their best. If we need a filler for the Duke game we should try to get a North Carolina long term hook-up. Syracuse should be considered a third or 4th choice; let them come in and play Manhattan or Fordham if they wish. They are a great attraction at the Garden but Duke or N.C. or UCLA or Kansas vs St. Johns will always be a bigger national event and should be a priority. Someone said "If you want to be the best, play the best".
we have made hibit of playing the best. If Syracuse makes the grade in the ACC, we should consider playing them. Right now, NC State should be next in line as a competitive game after the top two in that conference.
Was it published that Mr. Monasch has concluded a long term home and away with Syracuse like we had with Duke?

I was at the Garden today to watch my two alma maters play each other. It was beautiful to watch Cuse lose to Temple.

In my first entrepreneurial endeavor I encountered a disagreement that had to be hammered out in small claims court. Represented by a mature, older, competent attorney, he gave me the following advice that has resonated for years:

"Always act in your own best interests, not in the worst interests of your adversary."

Using that as a yardstick I cannot come to a clear decision in my mind on how to go forward. I do not want to help Syracuse even one bit, and would prefer them to rue the day they abandoned the Big East for more cash. Right now, city kids could count on playing in front of NYC friends and family for 3-4 games a year as a Syracuse player.

Having said that, I know SJU looks at the small picture, the sure fire cash that a sellout home game at the Garden vs. Syracuse would generate, which helps fund the team. As much as most of us would say, screw that, in another thread we are ticked that Garden sales for Gtown and others are so weak we've already slashed prices by 50%.

Plenty of other teams would love to come to the Garden and sell it out besides Cuse.
Dangle that carrot to those schools. Not Cuse.

Why would you quote your attorney's advice and than not follow it?

I'd rather suffer from kidney stones than continue to schedule them
Spoken by some one who obviously has never had them. Trust me you wouldn't. SMILEY FACE

Agree Moose, another very poor decision by our AD, absolutely no benefit to us, but a huge benefit to them.
We can schedule any major team we want at the Garden that will not derive the benefit Syracuse will.

Moose, off hand I can't think of a school who would come in and play us every other year and pack the Garden without question. Syracuse - SJU is the best bet on our schedule for a sellout. I'm sure that was the primary consideration in keeping them on our schedule.

There's no team I'd rather play every year then Cuse for the simple reason that there's no team I'd rather beat.

Duke
UNC
Kentucky
Uconn

All four I'd gladly play before Cuse.

And if creating a home court disadvantage at the price of a sellout is what the admin wants, then they need to look in the mirror long and hard.

I agree BUT.....Steve Lavin is an opportunist par excellence! He, and that poor excuse of an AD we have, do not see it through the angry eyes of the fans.
Syracuse needs St. John's in the "future" to maintain a footprint in NYC "post-Boheim". As far as sellout games without St. John's at the Garden......it ain't gonna happen. Same goes for Uconn that has a closer fan base to NYC than Syracuse.
Today's game was a good example! Saturday...December 22nd.....Christmas weekend........all the local SU students are home in the metro area....SU is ranked #3 in the nation......Temple is (was) a future Big East power....two great coaches......Philly and Temple fans just 90 minutes down the turnpike!
NO SELLOUT GAME.
The announced crowd of 12,800 had about 2,000 no shows and it did not look anywhere near the "Dome".

I cant believe they want to schedule SU every year. Let them play down South in their "new hometown". Another dumb decision by the powers that be at st johns

If and when we become a national power, we will be able to schedule to our needs. Our needs will not include Syra -excuse which, under Boeheim, would make an excuse for any basketball player, no matter what laws he broke. The ethics at Syra-excuse have become what you would expect from an SEC football program.
