STONY BROOK, Tue., Nov. 7, 7p, FS-1

would posh have been a good 15 min guy and have it work out for both him and the team? Is it dumb of me to even wonder that?
Not dumb at all Joe. I would have liked to have Posh here as a back up to Jenkins. Posh was offered the opportunity and chose not show up to a meeting/workout with Pitino so he could to Atlantic City with his girlfriend or something like that. Obviously, Posh did not want to accept that role for one reason or another.

Say what you want about Pitinos past but giving props to Looie…. That’s a class act.
He is a great politician.

Can I say how optimistic I am that we have players that can actually shoot the ball? I am not use to this at all. In the past we have either had an athletic player who can't shoot or a spotty shooter at best who is not athletic. The stat lines from the game looked very efficient.

I don't think anyone should be surprised that Posh wouldn't have been interested in a 15 minute backup role at this point in his career. He will clearly be a main guy at Butler and certainly not surprising he'd want to finish his college career that way. Wish him the best except when he plays against us.

Yep. I don't blame Posh for leaving and I don't blame Rick for letting him go. I know it's early on, but it seems like a win-win to me.

Politician, I guess, but still during that interview he didn't have to mention Looie at all and he did so twice.

All good in my Book.

Until we hired him I didn't think he was a fan of St. John's or Looie and now I am thinking I am wrong.

I think his praise of Looie is genuine. He has inferred as much in his stories of Looie and the old Big East. I am really sold on Ricks enthusiasm for this job and his genuine appreciation of others in the St. John’s family, and I consider myself a pretty good judge of character.

Pitino coached more on the sidelines in one half than CMA did all last season.

This was a good first test. SB had a lot of fight in them. I think we had more TO's than they did.

As for gauging the players and their respective roles at this point, I think all will make meaningful contributions at one time or another this season.

Re Daniss he had 3 TO's in first 4 minutes and 3 the other 24 so he seemed to settle down. Having a 2nd ball handler on the floor no doubt helped as there really wasn't one in the starting lineup, hopefully for the last time. 2 of Daniss, Dingle and Luis will need to be on the floor at the same time, with a touch of Cruz thrown in where necessary.

Two big differences from recent years:
1 a point guard who can dribble near the foul line and take a jump shot off the dribble
2 no longer do I have to wait dreading that the opposition was going to switch from a man to man to a zone defense which SJU never had an answer for. Pitino’s reputation for producing reliable outside shooting teams discourages teams using zones against his teams.

By he way, does anyone know if there were any recruits, or future recruits at the game?
As good ss last nights game was, I don't want big time recruits coming yo Campus for Stony Brook.

That is why we have MSG, let them hear a packed crowd when SJU is back on top and are the kings of NY. Seriously, if SJU is turning back the clock to the 80s and becoming a top nationally (not just in the north east), and you have Rick cosching there, them holy crap, htf could any local kid not want to have that.

You want to develope into an NBA player, well Rick is an awesome player developer also.

I don't know if Ian and/or VJ signed yep, but if not then i hope people stay in their ear everyday, multiple times a day.

Dare I say (first, if it hasn't already been said) that Daniss's game, especially that mid-range jumper, reminds me a bit of one Marcus Hatten.
I was seeing a lot of Ja Morant in his game last night which was a real pleasant surprise for me. As long as he doesn't get into off the court stuff like Ja has lol

wouldn't surprise me if Daniss models some parts of his game after a guy who also went under recruited as a skinny but athletic point guard.

Aside from Daniss’s handle being a bit questionable —that’s with anything below ‘really good’ being questionable, he’s got all the tools you’d want in a guard. Athletically he’s all there. He’s got good height and length. He’s shown he can impact the game in multiple ways other than scoring. Plus he’s proven as a scorer and capable as shooter and though not proven as a great one yet, he does have to be guarded.

We’ll see about his constancy, but on some nights I’m sure we’ll see a guard who’s as good as any in the conference.

It’s very obvious that RP chose Jenkins to be his PG. If Rick weren’t all in on Daniss , he would have chosen and got another PG in the portal .

I think it was clear he favored Clayton over all the Iona guys. He only talked about Clayton the first week. Someone asked him point blank the first day if he'd get any Iona kids in and he said "we'll get Walt in here for a visit next week." I'd take Clayton over any transfer Pitino brought in...even Dingle. He plays great, physical defense, his shot is as pure as it gets, and he can score everywhere.

But Daniss is no slouch. He does some things really well. That FT line extended jumper is automatic, he's always going downhill, very comfortable in the pick and roll, and active on defense. He never stops moving and never gets tired. He's got some old man tricks to hide his dribbling shortcomings too.

As I understand it , Jenkins was more the PG at Iona , even though Clayton could play PG too .

I don’t think anyone doubts that RP wanted Clayton here and was disappointed Walter left for Florida. His home state .

But , Rick wanted to have Jenkins too . Pair the 2 of them as his back Court like at Iona .

I think getting Dinkle to be his SG went a long way to forgetting about Clayton but , thete is no doubt Clayton was a blue chipper in the Portal .

St. John's is 1-0 with Rick Pitino patrolling the sidelines. There was plenty of good on Tuesday; what we learned, what we liked, the questions to ask moving forward & so much more. Lineups, minutes, who gets the game ball...Join Frank Molfetta & I as we breakdown game 1.
