STARTING 5

I think we quicken the pace on offense. Get bigger teams to try to shoot threes and up the tempo so they are not just playing half court against us and playing bully ball.
With this team as constructed if we press will be a layup line on us. From time to time as a surprise but would not expect it on any kind of regular basis.

If teams are getting a lay up line result from our pressure it only means our press is bad. Team is absolutely built to press.

Who is playing at back off the press?
What team even really presses anymore?
Would be shocked if we press. Shocked

How do you quicken the offensive pace if rebounding is deficient and you are stuck in the half court offense? Sounds like "rushing." Instead I'd like to see those fast and long guys forcing the opponent to rush.

To me this team is built to be an aggressor, not a counter-puncher. Go full pace for 40 and create mismatches on offense and havoc on defense forcing turnovers and converting defensive to offense. When stuck in the half court move the ball and keep the defense shifting to maximize those mismatches.

Nova presses every game. VCU with Shaka. Neither team was known for size. Admittedly haven’t watched his teams at Texas so not sure if it carried over.

Having a big time shot blocker isn’t a prerequisite to press. Sure it helps, but the reasons you stated eg., speed game up, limit half court sets, are the exact reason we should and will press. I’m not talking about 40 minutes.

I will give you VCU but like you did not see Texas enough.
We will have no size in the back. Not saying you need Patrick Ewing but big drop to Marvin Clark.
I think we play like the Elite 8 team.
And you can quicken the pace w/o pressing.

I'd be absolutely shocked if we don't press teams like Marquette, Georgetown and Hall and press them a lot. Also, while we don't have a premier shot blocker like Owens, we have guys like Simon, Keita & Figgy who will get their share of blocks, especially coming off the ball.
On the topic of playing a lot of guys and speeding up the other team, Auburn is an example of a team that was very successful last year (25 wins) playing 9 guys between 14 and 31 mpg; would like to see us use a similar rotation.

I think by now everyone understands I am a pro Mullin guy. So with that out there I would find it absolutely fascinating to see the press Mullin comes up with having pretty much never pressed before in his life. Unless that will be a ST Jean duty. That should be good times on here.

How will we quicken the other team up without pressing? Half court traps?

Obviously on offense we will look to push every chance we get but that doesn’t necessarily effect the other teams pace.

That will be Mitch:p
WASJU, we’ve pressed the last 3 years!
If that is what you are talking about.
Lovett and Ponds pressuring or trying to pressure the guards up top is not what people on here are referencing. I don't think anyway.

We play fast on offense other team usually forced to come along for the ride, yes.
Some half court traps and I imagine guys playing the passing lanes but honestly I think defense will be our number one issue even more so than rebounding in possibly preventing us from having a special year.

No, first year they used 1-2-1 full court with some success. My guess is we see some variation of that with either Simon or LJ up front. Past two years they have had success full court man but with lack of depth it wasn’t an option for long stretches.

I am not familiar with the"success" in any way, shape or form you are referring to that first year but I can't even imagine what a pressing Mussini looked like. But since I had the first season's memories surgically removed I will take your word for it.

Our defense was close to very good last year. Not sure how we’ll get worse on that end with our additions. Would have liked Owens back but his blocks were fools gold IMO. Agree that rebounding is our buggest question mark.

Mullin said it right in the podcast regarding defense. Keita more traditional on both ends and they will rely less on blocked shots - and he put this in the context of the perimeter defense improving. The perimeter d was our Achilles heel and also part of why the shot blocking was important.

Other quotes from Mullin:

"full court defense"
"depth... keep guys fresh"
"dictate tempo"

Exactly, and we do not need to full court press to be effective. A 3/4 and 1/2 trap could work, especially with Simon at the point creating havoc and Shamorie and Heron looking to pick off errant passes. Good thing about the trap is even it doesn't result in a steal, it disrupts the other team. They usually are just happy to have broken the trap and don't look to exploit the advantage once they have. Once you get a couple of steals it creates a lack of confidence in the opponent.

Figueroa looks like he has long arms and good hands and is deceptively fast. He'll be good in a pressure defense. Second time I've heard Mullin talk about Williams' defense so I would not be surprised to sub him in and go to a full court press as a spark. I think it was Lovett's last game he was giving the opponent fits. Not sure if Dixon is that fast but he could play that role too.
