STARTING 5

I'm hopping that Mullin uses a big rotation to press and run in order to wear out the other team.

This team will have the deepest talent of any St. John's team i can remember.

I'd like to see that too. Ran some good press for very short runs last season but tough to do with three guys doing iron man minutes.

Yes, we've got the horses to make this year Nolan Richardson's 40 minutes of hell redux if we chose to.

I’ve seen some references to the Bootsy era SJU teams that beat Duke at Cameron after losing at MSG the year before (in an epic game).

I already have my seats to the game in Durham this year (on February 2). I don’t think it’s unrealistic that our current roster is one of the few that could give Duke a run for their money. Barret and Reddish are legit and Williamson is a monster, but we have talent, athletes and, notably, some real basketball players. I’ll be proudly wearing my red Mullin jersey in a sea of blue (next to my wife in her Duke T-shirt); it’s going to be fun!!!
Favorable ruling from the NCAA for th first time.......ever. Can’t wait till they tip off for real. Fun team to watch.
The bball gods are finally on our side.

On offense i'd love to see them push just pass without dribbling and defense full court press the way nolan did at Arky in the 90s
We'd get over 100 alot

Did you purchase your ticket off the secondary market?
Ponds
Simon
Clark
Heron
Figueroa
I still insist that anyone who doesn't believe this is insane.

But we shall see soon enough. This season is going to be a magical ride.

I think if you were to list the 5 best players on the team and the 5 who will garner the most minutes no doubt those 5 are it. But maybe you start Keita and bring say LJ off the bench?

I think that is what will happen. Despite not having a ton of size, we have 2 6’9” athletic bigs that do have to be groomed over the course of this season in the post. Keita is still going to be our center and he’s going to need time on the court. I think Keita gives us some size, strength and ability to put the ball underneath. I think we can and will start whatever size we have underneath. When Keita needs a break or has foul trouble, we can usher in a talented and deep line of 1-4’s at any point.

I think you start your best player regardless of ht do not think regardless of who we start our rebounding will be much better than last yr

I agree usguard.
I think Clark will improve his rebounding #s, as he was improving late last season.
And I expect Keita to be strong under the basket--a big plus over Owens.
And both Heron & Figueroa will be solid rebounders.
We shall see, but looking better.

Keita starts by default as we have absolutely no one capable of playing the 5. When he comes out we go small and fast. That hole in the middle will be our Achilles heel but the other 4 talented players will have to step up. Very doable except against a superstar big.

It's a shame we weren't able to sign Jonathan Tchatchoua, the 6-8, 230 lb. post player, who ended up at UNLV. A recent story in the LV Review Journal described him as physical specimen, who was coachable and a good teammate. He will fight for playing time with six or seven other inside players. SJU would have offered him more playing time.

Think Clark will get the tip most games, but perhaps Keita gets a few

Maybe I'm off, but overall, I'd like to see the 200 minutes play out something close to this

Ponds: 34 (37 min last season, # 22 in country)
Heron: 33 (28 min last season @ Auburn)
Simon: 30 (36 last season, # 49 in country)
Clark: 30 (21 min last season)
Figueroa : 25
Keita: 15
Dixon: 13 (with a big bump up next season)
Trimble: 8
Williams: 6
Roberts: 6
Earlington: ????

Four players playing over 30 minutes a game is a recipe for disaster IMHO. A greater risk of injury, fatigue and roster unhappiness. In the easier games I would not like to see any of our top 6 play more than 25 minutes a game with the remaining 50 minutes allocated amongst Dixon, Williams, Trimble, Roberts and Earlington depending upon the game and match ups. In BE conference games the starters minutes would have to increase somewhat with the bench decreasing unless there are big foul problems.

Here's what I'd like but obviously it is a crapshoot depending on so many variables:

Ponds: 30
Heron: 29
Simon: 29
Clark: 25
Figueroa : 23
Keita: 22
Dixon: 20
Trimble: 13
Williams: 8
Roberts: 3
Numbers don't quite add up, but they are close.

fair point redmennorth.

I can't see Ponds less than 32, Heron at 30, and Simon & Clark at 28 though.... that would free up 8 more minutes.

agree on early season getting more looks overall at the newer guys.... but we can't afford to have those games on the line either.

Just about 30:
Ponds
Heron
Simon

Just about 25:
LJ
Clark

Just about 20:
Keita
Dixon

Split the remaining 20:
Trimble
Williams
Roberts
Earlington

I think Roberts might see more time than people think, if only because he’s 6’9” and gonna have to share the big guy role. I didn’t see the tip-off, but I heard from some he looked pretty good. Gotta get our only other “big” involved somewhere, especially if he has the athleticism to grab boards and be an off-side shotblocker at times. I think we will sub a ton this year and keep people fresh. I think our depth is talented enough not to force us into droughts too much. This team is a lot different than our teams in the past. Much deeper and our depth has some skill and athleticism..
