St. John's to Leave Nike?

Hear that Steve's favorite color is Blue.

As a traditionalist I prefer Red and White.

Other than Providence, we are the only school (in the "new" Big East) traditionally without the color blue on at least one of their their uniforms.

Somewhat of a disconnect to be The RED men or RED Storm with BLUE uniforms, IMO.

Again, teams have multiple uniforms. There's only so many ways you can design a dominant-red uniform without being over the top tacky.

Instead of being pleased and embracing the fact that we have options, people are bothered that we have blue unis? Seriously?

The Duke Blue Devils have blue, black and even gray unis.

Have to get with the times.

The same can be said about the fact that someone is bothered at the fact that some people don't like the blue uniforms. This board is for people to express their thoughts & opinions, getting with the times also means accepting the fact that people won't always agree on everything.

The argument of "Duke has blue, black and grey uniforms" makes no sense. Of course they'll have blue/black, those are their base colors. Grey is fine for a alternate uniform. The problem now is, we have white, red, black, grey and now blue uniforms. That's 5 different main color based uniforms. It's become too much.

The only other color shown was blue so where are you getting 5 different main color based uniforms from?

SJU has had yellow, black and blue in the unis as most recently in the 90s. The grays were no different than the black uniforms. They are alternates.

Nike treated us like stepchildren but now there are too many choices? Where's the red? LOL.

UA gave us mock up uniforms for a 2-week trip. If it were Nike, the team would be in their regular season apparel.

Good article in this month's Fast Company on the culture of uniform redesign.

Also, for those who love this stuff -- and these threads make it clear there are many -- take a look at Paul Lukas's blog www.uni-watch.com. Well researched and well written. If someone changes their shoelaces, Paul and his readers are on it. Great entertainment.

I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying. Last year, we had a red uniform, a white uniform, a black uniform, and a grey uniform. Now we have a 5th colorway, a blue based uniform. Get it?

The black alternate and gray alternate were Nike designs. They're gone. So we don't have those.

There will be a home white and a road red. Jamal was wearing a road blue alternate. 3 uniforms so far, not 5.

And they said the real authentic UA uniforms won't really roll out until 2014 so not much to be up in arms about.

I mean I'm not up in arms, it's just getting extremely confusing at this point. It's like this, I'm an Atlanta Braves fan, and they currently have 5 uniforms, but each at least ties into the original white/red/navy color scheme in the teams logo. For this St. John's uniform using some type of royal blue as the base color, we don't even have royal blue in the St. John's logo or color scheme, so to me it's out of left field.

I do not mind a little blue. Maybe as an outline for the letters and numbers, but too much can look tacky. My worry and main concern are the shorts. AWFUL. somebody help me out and post the pic of branch being interviewed after the first Europe game, the shorts make my eyes burn. Those need to go, and the blue needs to be less, well, less there. Also I'd like to see the red a little more darker. The bright looking red is just not great looking

It needs to be stressed these uniforms are just for Europe.

Moose check rysheed jordan new twitter profile picture. What about those

I know about those. I expressed displeasure in those. We haven't worn them yet so I don't know but if we wear them in Europe we might be safe. If not then they must be part of the season rotation.

My main concern is the players wearing the uniform. This year with Rysheed, Jamal, D'Angelo, Phil, Dom, Jakarr, Orlando, Felix, Max, Christian, Gift, Marco, & Chris we finally have the depth to be competitive on a National level. I realize that that our colors have always been predominantly Red/White, but using alternative colors is OK with me as long as the uniforms look good. I believe that UA will do their best to give us a nice looking uniform since we will be representing their brand in NEW York City.
If this team makes it to the Sweet 16 and beyond, I could care less what they wear.

I'll leave most of the critiquing of color schemes etc. to those who actually have a decent eye for this type stuff, but I do need to ask whether it's possible that a uniform could be so hideous that it would be the sole reason for a kid not committing.

Well some feel that uniforms are reasons a kid WILL commit. Ironically those are the ones who love the blue. In the same breath that could go the other way like you mentioned.

If a recruit chooses not to commit here based on the uniform, I'd venture to say he's not the character of player that Lavin would want around anyway and we should all be very thankful for that.

That experiment would be Oregon and no they didn't stop getting commits.

Listen guys, some will like the new ones, some won't. It will never be 100%. If we win games I don't care if Victoria's Secret makes our jerseys. Trust me though, new uniforms experimenting with radical designs is fun for the players. Countless amounts of them have tweeted pictures excited about "new gear!" or "sick new jerseys!". It's part of the basketball/urban street culture to look fresh when you ball. Nike made us look like a HS team. At least UA is throwing different colors out there and totally redesigning our shorts. I think the shorts are a bit too busy and all those color lines should be more by the hip/waist area rather than in the middle. But one thing is not debatable...UA so far has shown far more creativity and effort than Nike and you have to love that.

PS...word is that our UA gear goes on sale "soon" to public for purchase, so get those wallets ready >-)

What UA gear Joe? I doubt they will be selling these Euro jerseys. As for regular UA gear we still haven't rebranded so its just our logo with UA instead of the swoosh.

You also left out if a recruit chooses to commit based on uniforms he's not really the character player Lavin would want :) Shoe fits for both scenarios
