St. John's-Lehigh Game Thread

it was great to see Steve Lavin where he belongs - on the sidelines. However St. John's needs to understand that they can't come back from huge deficits all the time. that is not going to happen against arizona or when bigeast play starts. they need to rebound Wood ebetter too. nevertheless it was a great comeback.

And why can't we come back against better competition. Afterall, Lehigh has an excellent team, should do good in the Patriot League.

and were a pretty big team and knew how to box and rebound Two of them were at least 6'9 or 6'10 They were bigger
then gg and moe Yes we wil have trouble with talented big teams but speed can offset. As the great John Wood use to say, you do not recruit for size recruit for speed

I also remember how bad we were at times early last season. We were not this green but we also didn't have the ability overall on offense to come back like this team does. As newsie says, a win is a win. Not pretty but we have a long season ahead to progress from where we are. Last season we really didn't start looking like we understood the defensive schemes starting in the northwestern game. 2-0. A chance to start 3-0 if we are able to beat umbc. More importantly we need to start getting better, even if marginally on defense. The offense will come with our talent the way it is. Get better on D and we can compete with better teams.

Harrison is tough, defends well, rebounds well for a G ,but has not shown the outside shot he was known for. Hopefully as the seoson progresses he will improve. Im glad we recruited Woods, we need another outside threat.

I agree he hasn't shot well, but if you remember Hardy was ice cold from 3 point land the first part of last year-- and Lavin told him to keep shooting--- and finally he got hot and the rest was history.

I was very down when we gave up the 5 points in about 10 seconds to go from down 7, to down 12. Felt that any momentum we had gained from a recent run had been lost. Good job by the guys coming back.

Free throws were better (until the end), and Gift's new foul shooting stroke is highly unorthodox, but effective.

Rebounding is an obvious weakness, but so is point guard, and halfcourt offense. It seems like if we don't get steals and runouts, our offense stalls.

I'm not advocating for the termination of the guy doing the 35-second clock, but man did he screw up royally last night in the middle of the second half, by resetting at 1 second after a shot did not hit the rim (it actually missed the rim at about 3 seconds). Fortunatly, the refs (who were lousy early, but later adjusted) were on top of things, and got it right. First time that overhead screen came in handy for the fans..

One (pointless) observation: I don't think Len Elmore wants to do a game at CA again. With about a minute to go, during a stop in the action, he actually took off from press row, and did his anaylsis from the second row of the stands, after some people had left. I guess his 6'-8' or so frame could not handle the tight quaters of press row. Can't really blame him.

One thing about crowds: The 7pm weeknight start at CA has to go. I know these 2 games were national TV, and we were at their mercey, but it's just too hard for people to get there on time for that, especially if they work in Manhattan (I have to take a half-hour's leave everytime just to make sure I do it). Make it 7:30 or 8:00, and while the crowd's might not be bigger in total, more people will get there on time.

I agree as well. Our shooting concerns me most. The rebounding you know is a product of our lack of size, and playing a zone doesn't help on the defensive boards, either. But our shooting needs to be better. Hopefully D'angelo turns it on like Hardy did last year.

But through two games I haven't seen anything resembling good shooting. Nuri and D'angelo are quite effective going to the rim, but they're not keeping the defense honest from the outside.

Hardy had shot .38 percent on three pointers as junior playing in the Big East and with a coach who didn´t use him well.
Harrison shot .34 percent on three pointers as high school senior.

this is a little off topic but everytime len elmore and the other announcer called us a young team, which was quite often, it made my skin crawl. it was like a bad flashback of the norm era. it doesnt seem that it was that
long ago but then i remembered norm and the announcers were using that excuse through their junior year!
anyway i guess i have to get used to it because we're going to hear it from the announcers for the next 2 years

Elmore just wanted to catch Lavin on the side when it looked like it was over. Then came the misses at the line and he had to get back to work. No biggie. Lavin thought it was the switch to man at the nine minute mark that made the difference. That was the end of most of the open threes. Don't know whether Dunlap would have done it. Lavs also motivated them when they needed it and it was great to have him there. I thought Lindsey dogged it a lot while we were behind and didn't work for position on the boards. I hope that's not a long term problem. Still waiting for Harrison to show up but he's tough and plays hard. He'll be OK. Overall there's more freshman fear than I thought there would be. It looks like it's going to be matchup zone early to stay out of foul trouble and man to man at winning time. That's fine but I just hope we don't keep digging big holes for ourselves. Lehigh played some man too and we should have exploited it more. Someone has to step up and be willing to put it up though to keep it close until we shift gears.

It appears that we are scorers and not shooters, similar to let's say Felipe Lopez. It was obvious to me he scored on fast breaks and layups in high school, certainly not outside shots.
It will be interesting to see how we fare against a tight Syracuse zone. Right now, it looks like Harrison and Harkless are our only shooters.

Harrison has to step up his outside game if this team is gonna do any damage. Lindsey is as good as Ive seen getting to the basket but his jump shot isnt even close. Greene has been a complete nonfactor since the 1st exhibition and I really dont know what to expect from him. I HOPE he can be another 3 pt threat. Harkless looks like he can do anything, he actually reminds me a little of Burrell only better.

I agree about Green, especially since he hit those oputside shots against C.W. Post. Recently, he's been throwing up bricks.
