St. John's basketball family should be embarrassed

If you're not embarrassed, you don't know what basketball is supposed to look like.

Please stop with the Mahoney, Jarvis, Roberts comparisons. We all saw it and using them to set a level of expectation is signing up to be average.

As angry as all of us are, you just seem to be around after brutal losses. I don't remember your eloquence during the team's winning streak.

Call it what you want. I won't apologize for wanting a better basketball coach for this team.

Your reply is so self absorbed.

That's right, stand firm. Don't apologize. Go on a hunger strike just to prove how much you are the one who cares and demands results. Fight the good fight. You are regular William Wallace. If they only knew then, you could have been the lead in Braveheart instead of Mel Gibson.

Thanks for post, but I'm not at all offended by the name calling. Truth be told, my wife would probably agree with the 50 IQ comment. Make no mistake, I am also disappointed the way this season ended, but since I had more realistic expectations than some people on this board, im Not losing sleep over it. Maybe "next year" we can shoot for the big dance. In the meantime, lets all support this team and hope to win the NIT.

Embarrassed was when the sex scandal in Pittsburgh happened in 2004.

This is just a major disappointment and to me unacceptable results with the returning roster we had PLUS we added a blue chip point guard!!!

We were picked Top 2 by just about everyone pre-season Big East and to be quite honest, it was a joke that we didnt even have a bid to the NCAAs locked up going into yesterday's game. There are 4 games we had no business losing - PC, PSU, DePaul and Xavier. If we win those, we are in the NCAAs hands down.

The excuse that we started 0-5 just doesnt hold weight with me because those 5 games hold just as much weight as the games we played down the stretch.

The season was a failure and a disappointment but I wouldnt call it an embarrassment.....but that can change if Iona runs us out of our own gym next week

To be fair, the coaches picked SJU 5th.
If nor for Harrison's prayer "3" last week, SJU would have finished 6th.
Let's see what the coaches pre-season poll brings next year.

Yeah, and the same coaches also picked Marquette to finish first
The reality is that nobody had any idea how things would turn out in the new league's first season of operation

If we lose to Baldi and Iona I will personally start a riot in the rockaways and I will buy a white castle franchise and put it in front of his house

Zoning could be a problem.

G'town was picked to finish in second place.

I love White Castle
Started getting them on Bell & Northern when they were 12 cents each
Years ago, when there was a beef shortage, Bob Hope quipped that it wouldn't affect White Castle, because they get 1,00 burgers out of a lb. of ground beef :)

IMHO there are two ways to look at this: 1) This team went in to that Providence game with everything (all their goals for the season) right in front of them and they shit the bed, bottom line. 2) The team was down big with 6:05 left and from 17 pts down to get to within one pt of the lead and if not for a missed layup and blown foul call on a 3pt shot by D-Lo we would have won the game.

Either way, regardless of everybody's emotional responses and reactions after the game (including my own), I don't think this season was an embarrassment. These kids went through all the personal issues that they went through, had the bad start and they still were able to compete to the point where they had everything right there in front of them at the end. there's something to be said for that. Are there issues with this team? absolutely. But, to call them an embarrassment is not right. These are kids, and this group is probably way to emotional, from D-Lo's issues last year, to Dom's behavior on the court at times to Obepka getting upset because he was taken out after committing three really silly fouls. I think more than anything this group needs grow up, mature and focus more. The personal issues that they had to endure are hard for any kid, but for kids as emotional and immature as this group it's probably worse. I'm not saying they're bad kids but they need to suck it up and become men.

How long is this guy going to be able to troll the board?

A critical assessment of this season is a disappointment but clearly not an embarrassment. That's pretty easy - you don't have a 20 win season and go 10-8 and call the season an embarrassment.

I was more embarrassed when the 03 team refused to pay the hooker. I mean, geez, even Cecilia Chang paid for stuff she bought illegally.

If they had called her, she would probably have given them the University's credit card number. A happy ending for all!

Not upset, just bored. You repeat the same thing over and over. You must be a riot around the office watercooler.

I'm embarrassed that I'm watching the selection show, hoping against hope. So pathetic. It's like waiting around a pickup game waiting to get picked when you know its not happening but having that "Pick me, Pick me" stupid look on your face.

I know you're not a glutton for punishment, Beast. LOL

I, recall not watching the '88 NCAA Tournament Selection Show. I, figured St. John's was NIT-bound (although, we had beaten some good teams that season). I remember coming home from playing basketball at the neighborhood gymnasium before changing the channel to CNN. CNN use to do a sports break at :29 and :59 minutes after the hour, if I remember correctly. I remember seeing the Johnnies' name (playing Florida), and couldn't believe it. We probably also got in on reputation, that year.

I'd love to be shocked tonight, but I'm seriously doubt it. I'm not gonna watch, and will catch the brackets somewhere online later.

If Hooper didn't go brain-dead versus Providence in CA, then we finish outright in 3rd place.

Really?? We played selfish, uninspired ball except for a stretch of about 8 games and selected periods of other games but one play decided our season?? Really?? The crap play down the stretch that lead to that play meant nothing?? The absolute not showing up in ALL the most important games down the stretch are thrown out the window for ONE PLAY? A guy coming in cold off the bench and getting tied up was the deciding factor in a season defined time and time again by our complete lack of consistency in ANY area of the game? A season defined by our long stretches of lackluster effort and playground line-ups? Frankly, coming from you, that comment surprises the hell out of me. You guys can make all the excuses and spout all the hypotheticals you want but at the end of the day we underachieved big time; blame the coach(es), blame the players, whatever, but for most of the year we played crap, AAU style ball and at the end of the day we got just what earned - the NIT!!!

This may be too simplistic. It's more than record, it's record in light of potential.

If you're Butler and you have no players (this year), then winning 20 overall and 10-8 would have been s a huge achievement. If you're Providence and you lose three starters for the season and still win the league tournament and go to the NCAAs, it's a great season.

if you have top-20 talent but somehow manage to finish 5th in a watered-down league and fail to make the NCAAs, then you can choose your word. Whether it's disappointed, embarrassed, disgusted, that's up to you. I suppose reasonable minds can differ, but I don't see anybody out there saying the team met reasonable expectations. Bottom line is it underperformed, and pretty significantly.

Fortunately SJU fans are used to that.

Nope! One play didn't decide the season. I'm not about to get into a discussion about the season because it's done and overwith, and past time for me to get some sleep. Not to mention, bored and tired of talking about it over and over.

Frankly, you should be responding to the post above mine. I thought you would've figured my post was done in jest to the post above mine. Basically, stating I can also play the "if" game. If one is gonna play the "if" game when we won, then it should be done with losses, as well.

Fortunately SJU fans are used to that.

Maybe the expectations were off. Coming into the season, the following list is what we expected from some of our players.

1) Jordan one and done
2) People who attended St. John's practices before season said Sanchez was best player on team and could start for an NBA team, so everyone thought he'd be a beast
3) Sampson was gonna have a great year and bolt to the draft
4) I kid you not, some posters, after the St Joes buzzer beater, thought Dom would take a huge step forward and maybe be first team all big east
5) Hooper would be a sharpshooter this year and hit multiple threes a game

If all five of these panned out, we are a 4/5 seed in the tournament right now. But none of them did. Expectations were way too high to begin the year, and that became clear when we opened up beating a D2 team by 2. If this team taught me anything it's that no matter how much talent you have, come into the season with low expectations and hope they exceed them.
