St John’s in danger of Closing ?

I was surprised to read somewhere online that a number of Schools in the Metro NY Area were in danger of closing due to financial reasons . Is that accurate for our Alma Mater ? I believe Fordham was also on the list ? If valid , I think a great many of us would be beside ourselves with disappointment for the most obvious of reasons . Our own identity with the School we graduated from and , also the heritage of our BB Program . What can we do , obviously donate more to the School but , maybe a Special Campaign needs to be commenced to highlight that to all Alumni, Friends , Family and Fans, as well . Some Posters here , have official or close Association with the University Administration and can advance a initiative to consider Ways and Means to alleviate the Financial Crisis our dear St John’s is facing. Thanks to those who can be our messengers in this regard .

Both schools have endowments of about $700m and I imagine access to the bond markets. Seems rash to be talking closure.

It's at least possible that these dooms-day forecasts may fall flat, IF effective vaccines can be distributed by the start of the '21 ' '22 school year.
Hopefully, these colleges would be able to weather through 1 disastrous year.[/quote]

After hearing Dr. Fauci say that most vaccines are only about 50-60% effective, I'm losing faith that even the best vaccine will result in a return to a pre-Covid life.

The Covid vaccine is the equivalent of the flu shot. Will need to be gotten every year and has a 40-60% success rate.

Add that to the fact that early polls show only about 40% of people will actually get the vaccine, its not solving much.

Not arguing, just hoping. No vaccine has gone through Phase 3 Trials yet. Just hoping more effective vaccines will emerge in time for a full '21 - '22 school year--complete with sports.
We shall see.

To really get some normality back, we'll need both a reasonably effective vaccine and a reasonably effective treatment method for those who do get sick.

Wherever this thread goes, please do not start any political discussion. reminder from Paul is to not go there. Thanks.

Back to the OP, a family member of mine worked in the presidents office at NYIT in Old Westbury. They were struggling financially before the virus, I could only imagine what they are going to do now. A majority of their student population are international students who obviously cannot travel here.

A thread about this subject was started a few weeks ago. Mods, maybe you want to merge the threads.

Just a comment , I started the new Topic , unaware it had been posted already under another discussion . However, I never mentioned the Virus or anything other than St John’s appearing on a list of Colleges the Author indicated might be in Financial trouble . If the discussion drifted to issues other than Financial , it was not intended to be controversial . Also , St John’s is Searching for a new President as the current one , President Bobby will be retiring . It’s important to couple that , with a indication of Financial difficulties adding to the situation . Thought it might generate discussion from those closer to the University than many of us Fans . No political intent at all .

I wasn't pointing fingers at you. It was just a cautionary comment to all posters.

Considering they just removed email access for all alumni (>1 year after graduation) without even a warning, I'm not surprised.

Also my wife and I have been graduates for 6 years now and neither of us have received a call or anything asking for donations. Not that we're complaining, but seems odd given most colleges contact alumni after a few years and I'd be fine giving some money. Wasted opportunity.

Many of the problems which StJohn’s faces are beyond its control but unfortunately many are self inflicted as a result of lack of Institutional leadership over the decades.

Is there something fundamentally wrong with St. John's finances compared with other similarly sized private schools? I understand the mission statement involves giving a lot of financial aid to those who need it, but is that really the reason the school is struggling?

If there is a solution (such as less financial aid), then I hope the school does what it needs to to keep from shutting down. Their loyalty needs to be with alumnis and donors, especially those in the work force who don't want to put a closed college on their resumes.

I imagine that that would still be less traumatic than being a current student and having your school shut down on you.

Of course, current students are even more important and that goes without saying. I meant for future students for the 2021 freshmen class and onwards I hope they can figure something out, even if that means selecting fewer financial aid applicants or whatever.

Adam - may want to check on Alumni portal, or email alumni office to validate they have your correct contact info.

Their outreach has gotten much better last few years. Mark Andrews and team doing a lot. Once on the list, I'm sure you'll see regular correspondence.
