St. Joe's game

Great and exciting win there at the end. The concerns I have from earlier in the thread still exist (mainly about Phil), but the team showed heart and pulled it out. Glad we are moving on.

I always prefer the chaos for the defense to hurry up and cover the ball. Hate when teams call a TO there.

Most teams have a startegy in place already for the final seconds of offense anyway for spots like that.

And, if we call a TO their defense gets setup and if we then have trouble inbounding, it's a turnover. I think we only had one left. This way we had one if they couldn't inbound it in time.

His strategy obviously worked!!

Nice win ( thank you Dom). Almost knocked over a table at the bar I was at when Dom's shot went in , whew. Just a thought. While things did end up well for us, I just thought that coach should have called a time out between Ron Roberts first and second free throw to 1. Ice Roberts at the line, 2. Go over either who would take the last shot if the game were tied OR, who should get the ball, if Roberts missed the second free throw, to shoot the final foul shots. While the outcome was great for us, the strategy????

Isn't the point of strategy to get a great outcome?

...and Kentucky loses to Robert Morris in the first round!!

And the Robert Morris fans rush the court...wtf?
No problem with them rushing the court, although it is a vastly different team they beat the national champion who has a great basketball history and gets the best players in the country, When is Robert Morris ever going to get a bigger win than that?

I guess I'm tiring of all the rushing the court we've seen this year. That was an exciting win for RM, but not a great UK team they bear and rushing the court in a first round NIT game is a bit much.

We had one time out. If he makes both shots, its a tie game, you get the ball with 5.7 seconds left with a chance to win. So you are looking at OT or a buzzer beating win. You call time out, he hits both, and you can't inbound the ball or someone gets tied up quickly, then what to you do?

Not a fan of the way he uses his time outs, but I have no problem with him not calling one there, even if Dom doesn't hit the game winner.

Honestly also just running the ball up the court is more natural in a way that I think our players are more accustomed to playing that way.

Good point about saving a time out in case we couldn't inbound the ball. I didn't think of that scenario.

That is exactly what coach said in his interview after the game. They work on thses situations in practice and he did not want to give St. Joes a chance to set it's defense.

And the Robert Morris fans rush the court...wtf?

I loved watching every second of it. They just knocked off the reigning NCAA champions, and became the first team in 2 seasons to end Kentucky's season. It's a huge win for their program and their students. Even in the NIT, Kentucky still has a talent laden roster, and still is KENTUCKY. This is what distinguishes college basketball from the pros, where students are so heavily invessted in their teams emtionally, that elation follows after a signature win. Congrats to Robert Morris, and for the students, well done!

Really would have liked to see the Johnnies play in the finals against Kentucky.

I want everyone to up my Kharma right now. We jsut went ahead.
+1 from me

you're the best. I was going to PM you to drive down to the game.

I wish I went. Couldn't get out of a meeting after work

We could have been on line at Genos or Pats right now.
or eat at both :)

I usually eat at both Provolone with at Pat 's and Wiz without at Gino"s.
Great win, team and Lavin really enjoyed it. Did you see the celebration? Lavin jumped for the moon after the shot went in.
Yeah. The biggest thing I took out of the ending is neither he or the kids have given up.

That game meant something to them and maybe it's not the ncaa's but that game meant something to me as a fan also

Very well said.

Nice quotes from Lavin at the end of the game, especially remembering his dad, obviously heavy on his mind. "Out of the mud comes a lotus", his dad always told him.

There is not truth to the rumor that one of our fans at courtside were yelling, "Suck it up, Steve!", as Lavin remembered his dad, while another dissescted the interview and yelled, "It's not REST IN PEACE, Steve. It's MAY HE rest in peace." Just sayin.

Stupid hurtful remarks

Yes, both an assessment of Lavin's remarks regarding his dad's passing and the comment "suck it up" were posted by two of our more illustrious members.

There is not a player on the Robert Morris roster that Calipari would have even sniffed at coming out of high school, and not a player on Kentucky's roster that would have considered Robert Morris in his worst dreams. That's what made this win so special for any college basketball fan - really for any fan of an underdog.

Really would have liked to see the Johnnies play in the finals against Kentucky.

A nice win for the team in a most unlikely finish. For those who think many posters here are negative, I post what I see on the Court..If it's terrible shooting, no rebounding, poor substitutions I post what I see..

In the first half, many of the end of game posters weren't here either.. So, it's a function of the direction of the game..

Any body who knows BB has to admit the first half was terrible basketball.. If you don't you're not watching..

I'm a St John's fan and a alum, I don't need lectures from people who think they feel their mission is to respond or critique other posters.

This team won the game last night, after what, 6 consecutive losses? Yes, it was a nice win! Any win for St john's is a good game. I'm a fan of the team and support the team and root like heck for them to win. But, ugly bad basketball is still ugly bad basketball.. I call what I see in a game as I see it. Everyone is entitled to express their views. If others just want to argue or to flame posters who see things differently, that's your right too..

This was 1 win in a season of many losses, many poorly played and coached.. I hope ,like most, that the team will play better next year and be more competitive. Meanwhile, Virginia is next.. Maybe lightning in a bottle again?

It was a huge win for the program because at the end of the day, they are Robert Morris and they beat Kentucky. It doesn't matter whether it was a weaker UK team or not, the jersey still says Kentucky, and that is just not supposed to happen at anytime, NIT, NCAA or regular season. So yes, that was a big win for them that they will talk about for years and years to come.
As the old Phil Martelli (I think it was him) line goes, they have McDonald's All-Americans and my kids eat at McDonalds sometimes.
