St. Francis Game

It is surprising & disappointing how few current students show up to the games. I personally think that there should be more student-only seating ringing around the court at Carnesseca (or at least along one sideline - ala Duke). Make it fun for the students to be able to try and rattle opponents by being on top of opponents. Alumni Hall might be more of a destination for students if they were able to sit closer to the court.

How hard can that be to get more students to sit down low? If many of the season ticket holders are already pissed off because of what the AD with the contributions/points fiasco some years' back, we might as go hog-wild and push back more the season ticket holders a few rows for the students. I don't think season ticket holders would be offended by that if they were moved a few rows back to make room for the students. I wouldn't be offended.

If you are a steak away from a heart-attack you shouldn't have all the tickets down low, just because you have more money and make donations to the school - let's make some more room for students down low; it makes it more fun for them and everyone in attendance at the game. I think it is prudent to groom further generations of fans. It kills the atmosphere when older fans - are next to the court, but don't have any enthusiasm or energy to root for the team. Would rich alumni season ticket holders be really that offended if their seats started in row #5 - and not relegate the student body to much further back?

The AD really needs to address this situation. I think it hurts our recruiting when the atmosphere is dead at Carnesseca. How impressive is it to a recruit kid when the atmosphere is dead at Carnesseca? We know we can't compete with some other schools as far as an on campus atmosphere, but perhaps if our little gym had some more energy in it, we wouldn't be handicapped as much.

I don't know other universities' student attendance situations - but we seem to be in a unique situation. Our campus is in the best city in the world with many distractions. But SJU has many, many alumni that live near by. Are there any other universities like us that have had good historical success, still remain in power conference (coupled with a very weak decade or two) - that draw as few students as we do? There can't be too many.

Make it fun for the students - sit more of them near court, that's what I say.

i can't speak for today's students and why there's virtually no school spirit at st john's. it isn't because they can't get good seats. in my day, when st john's was strictly a commuter school, we had no problem sitting in the nosebleeds at the gardens. every student i knew worked...so we couldn't make every game. there were still complaints in the torch about student apathy...always.

next, someone will suggest we take students to the games in limos.

Agree with NYCRedman. I was there. Where are the Johnnies fans? There only visit to the new arena. There was no one there. Barclays is actually pretty easy to get to by subway LIRR or driving. Where is the base?

This proves once and for all that SJ does not travel well. We will never be mistaken for Kentucky or Syracuse fans. We do not travel well.......even inter-borough. LOL.....and a sad LOL at that!

Its really amazing.

One thing that probably factored in was the cost of the ticket. I was lucky b/c a friend had an extra free ticket for me, but I am curious as to what the face value was for this event. Given that we are in the holiday season, I can see why fans may have not wanted to shell out a lot of money for a game that was not part of their season tix plan. My face value was $45.00 and I was in section 117.

And you had the ability to see 3 games.

Yes, which I guess all in all it wasn't a bad deal if I had paid ; )

Get ranked #1 and attendance will soar

No one is arguing that, but why not support them on their way to number 1?

Seriously, supporting the #1 team in the country is easy. Plenty of the 350+ schools who won't be ranked #1 this year draw plenty of people to their games. That's just not going to happen at STJ. A disenfranchised commuter student and alumni base and a metro area with countless more entertainment options makes STJ one of the worst, if not the worst, supported hoops programs per capita in the country based on local population and local alumni.

True......yet, I would have preferred root canal at 2:30 than watching Princeton/Fordham! LOL!!

So you see 2 :)

But the hour between our game and the last game was a bit much

Guys I'm sorry but I'm calling Bullshite on the ticket price excuse. We sat up the nosebleed of the 200's and we paid group rate of $13 a ticket so the price thing is nonsense.

Get off your arse and go to the freaking game.

Honestly going to a game on campus is more of a pain in the @ss than going to the barclays.

I am not in the seatback chairs, so I am not defending wealthy donors. I will say, though, that SJU does NOT have enough donors period.

I WILL say this, though. This school has NEVER had a ton of students supporting the program. Even in 1985, the Final Four year, most of the fans in attendance were alumni and locals who had adopted the team. After spending years attending every home home and travelling to Syracuse, Villanova, Army, Georgetown, BC - basically anywhere you could drive to, I remember the school finally igniting when we mde the final four. I went down to get tickets, and the lines were enormous, with most students who had never been to games camping out. My friends and I - season ticket holders - got shut out through the normal process. If not through the kindness of Dennis Myron, who thought it was crazy the the most loyal group of followers had been shut out, and who found us nosebleed seats, we'd not have gone to Lexington.

Even during the team's revival season two years ago, students only showed up in force for the heralded games. You are telling me students deserve to be close to the court, simply because they will make noise? You may remember, that SJU DID try this, opening up the entire bleacher section opposite the benches for students about 10 years ago. The result? Students didn't show up, and most of the long term season ticket holders cancelled after being moved upstairs.

CA is a bandbox. With student sections behind the baskets, if other students filled the rafters, the place would rock. The sad fact is, unlike many huge college programs, if you removed alumni and other followers from the SJU attendance equation, our atten dnace would be as anemic as our women's games.

Again, not to support wealthy donors, who are now sitting in seats I held I held for 25 years, but they are a select people in terms of their generosity, whereas most of us (statistically 80% of alumni) never contribute a dime to the school.

Scheduled for root canal in January, would prefer watching Fordham- Princeton! But hey, that's just me.

I'd totally be there for 13 dollars! I could not find tickets for that cheap. I am a poor St.John's Alumni and try to save as much money as possible. I'd be there for sure, but can not afford! 13 dollars i'd be there every game!

Jim is a 2 pack a day smoker. That is where he got the $13 figure....a pack of cigarettes! LOL!
Now I do not know Jim, but I bet there are a few like him that rather spend $180 per week smoking and complain about a $40 basketball ticket.
Trust me, if St. John's was ranked #3 in the country and we were playing St. Louis, instead of St. Francis, we may have been the headline game and not relegated to a warm-up game. Having stunk up the better part of the past 10 years, we need to start winning and being ranked. Then a $40 ticket will seem cheap.

I was refering to another poster who said he was at the game for 13 dollars for the St. Francis Game. I do not smoke. I would love to go Friday if anyone is selling tickets for 10 dollars. On Stubhub it says 2.50 but then I would have to pay 20 dollars shipping. Defeats the whole purpose. There are 20 dollar tickets at the door. That is the sole reason the games are not getting sold out, tickets are not there. It is supply and demand it is economics.

I am a season ticket holder. I walked up for the Barclays game. The pricing was weak. $ 100 for Sec 1?00 and beter. $ 30 for Sec 200 and up, no in betwee. I asked o best available $ 30 seat and was up o. My Garden seats are Row A 100 level.

I asked why $ 100. And it was because you get.3 games. They need to address next year.

Still doesn't address why no one went. Barclays isa great venue. Should ave inspired someone.
