St. Francis Game

unable to to get 1000 fans to go to brooklyn

That's why I laugh when people say we shouldnt play Syracuse or Uconn or name your team at the Garden as some sort of punishment. Both teams dont need us to play there and both would outdraw us.

First of all, you are comparing apples and the Orange! The Orange alums, and local students that attend Cuse, wait with anticipation for NYC games. The SJ fans live, sleep and fart in NYC. SJ needs to be what the Orange are to re-gain that type of following.
Secondly, and for the last time, Uconn is done in NYC.....toast....burnt....finished.....unless it plays St. John's and the few 1000 fans SJ will bring to the game. A good, not great Uconn and St. John's game, on a Saturday night may now draw 10,000 to MSG......not 18,000. Uconn is a big ?????. If Lavin stays, SJ will be a !!!!!!!

Michigan, its alum groups and their NYC alums especially, have been promoting this game for quite a while. It was an organized effort. St. John's did zero to get their fans to the game. St. Francis did even less. For Fordham and Princeton students and fans, risking their lives to go to Brooklyn was too much to ask. The restaurants, bar scene, and shopping are non-existent. For these schools to be sucked into a warm-up game for the Michigan Alumni Invitational was pitiful! There should have been ONE warm-up game -- LIU-SF. Monasch is an impicil! He needs to go in the new Big East regurgitation.

Maybe ironic, but did you mean imbecile? Sorry I'm not trying to be an ideot.

I agree with everything you are saying Class 72, but why do we as fans need the school to promote or organize something to get us to attend? Why can't we just get up and go to watch the team/school that we root for simply because its the team/school that we root for? I was there yesterday and just shocked at how empty the arena was for St. John's game.

My thoughts on the Barclays center. #1 dont drive there unless you have to. Parking sucks. That rust colored look is baffling to me. It looks so freaking ugly. Kind of like a rotting ex olympic venue.

But once you start walking in I the it was great. All the workers there were really nice. Lots of different food selections and fellow redmen foodie " still happy " couldnt stop raving about the cuban sandwich that he had.

Our seats were high but I didnt mind them. Pretty steep incline which kind of reminded me of the prudential center.

Their scoreboard over the court is awesome

Agree. This is why I have an issue with those who say the big crowds will return when we start winning big. For really big crowds we will have to win really big and by that I mean top 10 big. Are those real fans or front runners who will disappear if we don't continue to win big?. Let's face it-we have a very small fan base. Crowd at our game at Barclay's made game feel like we were at a chess match and it wasn't until Michigan game that arena was packed and came alive and made for a much more enjoyable experience. It makes me wonder if I am the one who is nuts for bothering to keep attending these games that are so devoid of any enthusiasm.

Agree with NYCRedman. I was there. Where are the Johnnies fans? There only visit to the new arena. There was no one there. Barclays is actually pretty easy to get to by subway LIRR or driving. Where is the base?

A few quick observations from recent games:

Shockingly, despite all the underclassmen and not having a PG yet, we don't turn the ball over very much. I hope that continues.

I like Borgault getting some chunks of playing time in the games recently - we need his shooting and it would be nice to figure out if he can be a contributor this year. If he can't get it done, than that's fine and he'll lose his playing time to Balamou or Garrett.

Sampson is a star in the making. Even at his height, he is quicker than virtually all other players on the floor. I think he needs to continue to take 20 shots a game, even if it is at the expense of others' attempts. Two things I want from him a little more: some more drives to the basketball - he's clearly starting to do that more now, and I want to see that continue. It would be nice if he could improve his free throw shooting a bit. He's at 62.5% For a guy that has a money mid-range game, 62.5% is too low. He has the ability to be 75% free throw shooter.

One very minor thing I hope we can get some help on: our team is horrible on hook shots: whether it's Sampson, Jones or Obekpa - we need some instruction or the players have to be ordered not to take that shot any more. We must be shooting 25% collectively as a team on those shots. We seem to just throw it up at the rim and pray. This seems like such a minor thing, but it drives me nuts, I cringe every time I see the results of our hook shots.

Obekpa is amazing on his blocks. His confidence is improving in his overall game - but I really hope he can improve his free throw shooting. He's 29% on the year now... yikes. Other teams will use that against us if he doesn't improve dramatically.

I look forward to seeing Branch play - I wonder if he will truly be able to play the PG role and create some easier shots for others.. It would be nice.

Phil Greene - Only scoring single digit points lately. I think he is a better player than that. I like his little transition-tear drop shot game. I think he can shoot a bit more, perhaps at Pointer and Obekpa's expense.

We definitely have some good scoring options this year - I think more-so than in recent memory. Am I correct thinking that?

Playing well against St. Francis is not the same as playing well against Syracuse. While it's encouraging to see a talented kid score and rebound, we will see how he fares against major competition. When the real games begin, we will see how this team fares over the rigors of a Big East season

Its the AD's fault bec. he pissed off the longtime fans like myself but never bothers to admit his major mistake &
correct it instead just continues to send letters asking for more $$.
The tanman should have granfathered all season ticket holders in their seats & never extorted more money under
the losers norms campaign until he had a winning coach like Lavin making the ncaa's
Coppertone has failed to get the students to the game shows his incompetance

It is surprising & disappointing how few current students show up to the games. I personally think that there should be more student-only seating ringing around the court at Carnesseca (or at least along one sideline - ala Duke). Make it fun for the students to be able to try and rattle opponents by being on top of opponents. Alumni Hall might be more of a destination for students if they were able to sit closer to the court.

How hard can that be to get more students to sit down low? If many of the season ticket holders are already pissed off because of what the AD with the contributions/points fiasco some years' back, we might as go hog-wild and push back more the season ticket holders a few rows for the students. I don't think season ticket holders would be offended by that if they were moved a few rows back to make room for the students. I wouldn't be offended.

If you are a steak away from a heart-attack you shouldn't have all the tickets down low, just because you have more money and make donations to the school - let's make some more room for students down low; it makes it more fun for them and everyone in attendance at the game. I think it is prudent to groom further generations of fans. It kills the atmosphere when older fans - are next to the court, but don't have any enthusiasm or energy to root for the team. Would rich alumni season ticket holders be really that offended if their seats started in row #5 - and not relegate the student body to much further back?

The AD really needs to address this situation. I think it hurts our recruiting when the atmosphere is dead at Carnesseca. How impressive is it to a recruit kid when the atmosphere is dead at Carnesseca? We know we can't compete with some other schools as far as an on campus atmosphere, but perhaps if our little gym had some more energy in it, we wouldn't be handicapped as much.

I don't know other universities' student attendance situations - but we seem to be in a unique situation. Our campus is in the best city in the world with many distractions. But SJU has many, many alumni that live near by. Are there any other universities like us that have had good historical success, still remain in power conference (coupled with a very weak decade or two) - that draw as few students as we do? There can't be too many.

Make it fun for the students - sit more of them near court, that's what I say.

The STJ Alumni Organization did organize a well attended event at the Barclays Center prior to the game.
It was in the exclusive and fashionable Calvin Klein club and featured unlimited eats and drink.
Coach Keady appeared and gave a detailed scouting report and answered questions from the attendees. Only downside was the school representive who claimed the game marked the university’s first “home game” in Brooklyn in many years.
Actually the STJ game was just a pre-lim for the Michigan game.
West Virginia may have had more fans than STJ.

I wish they would have publicized this event a bit more. YOu cant complain about attendance when the school really doesnt know how to market or promote the events

If you only have X tickets and you sell out your allotment and aren't given more its tough to promote

Gee, thanks for clearing that up for me... oh boy... once again, this kid gets better with EACH game. That was my point.

I agree that the school can always do a better job promoting but the game was on the schedule. All of us knew about it. Students/fans who follow St. John's knew about the game. There were ads for it on the subway. Bottom line is that if fans want to go, they will, regardless as to how well promoted the game is. I am sure every single member of redmen.com was aware of the game. How many actually went may be a different issue.

Went to the game , sat in the nose bleed seats .It was a bit steep getting up the stairs but after half time I was able to move down to the lower part of sec 210. Arena is very nice and is easy to reach by subway .
