We are all becoming conditioned to believe that all this turnover is somehow a new normal. I agree there is more turnover in the game overall but if this roster starts turning over yet again it is another sign of big problems. Look around, we play all the other Big East teams twice and become familiar with their players. There is no way any other team, including DePaul, has had the annual churn that SJU has had since Mullin became coach.

And so far, unlike when Harkless and Sampson left, the guys bolting (I'm not including Shamorie in this thought) had zero chance of every playing in the NBA.
100%...turnover is a new normal to an extent (keyword). Not to this degree however.
I think the number of transfers averages to about 1 player, per team, per year. We have about 2 or 3 guys leave every year.

To make it worse, some of the guys who left, like Sima, Dixon, and Yakwe, were getting decent to good playing time (Ellison too, but that was more understandable).
Yes, and it is not just transfers. Mussini, Freduenberg, and Lovett all went running overseas with a lot of eligibility left. Word is Mack, who isn't even here yet, will leave after one year. Are we to believe that Desi Rodriquez was never good enough to play in Budapest while he was at Seton Hall? Or Angel Delgado? Do folks think Markus Howard, soon to be named BE player of the year, will leave to go play in a third world country if he is not deemed ready for the NBA? I do not.

I get leaving for the NBA but SJU keeps recruiting guys who rather be just about anywhere in the world besides SJU.

I've been a big time critic of Mullin, but I've tried to adopt Greg Williams Sr. words of wisdom. As disappointing as this season has been, they can salvage this season with a strong showing in the BET and possible NCAA Tournament appearance. Are they a frustrating team to watch? Absolutely, but I'll root for them until there are no more games to be played.

Let's table the "Fire Mullin" discussion until our season is over. I'm sure it'll be an interesting offseason for sure.

Agree. Let's table this kind of stuff as Monte suggested for a couple of days at least and root for our guys to pull one out tomorrow night. Would be great for Justin to punctuate his defensive player of the year award with a sterling defensive performance tomorrow. Let's go Johnnies!!

Please don't spam the board with Pitino posts like you did with your last lame coaching choice. It is N E V E R happening.

These threads are disgusting. We have to be better than this. How did he even coach the Xavier game? How is he going to coach the game tomorrow? Which one of you could lose a brother and coach a team to a win six hours later? Which one of you could go to a wake and funeral for a brother and coach a tournament game?

This topic should be off limits entering a conference tournament game under normal circumstances.

all due respect, then maybe he should sit the games out rather than coach?

Last month was the fifth anniversary of my sister's death, and I'm still not over it. I personally don't know how he coached last game, or how he'll coach however many games we have left.

I certainly won't be posting anything bad for the time being. And like you said, we still have conference tournament game(s) to play. Even without his brother's death, there probably should be self-imposed moratoriums on angry successor posts. We'll know soon enough where we stand.

If we flame out and miss Big Dance, there will be decisions to make. But we should try to enjoy what's left of season.

Hell, his dad and his brother both died before age 60. Coach may say, "F it, let me spend quality time with my wife and kids while I can."

That's a personal decision, though. And if he feels like coaching is best for the team and his sanity, that's his call. Like any good boss, I imagine Cragg told him he can take time if he needs to.

In my town we had one of the most horrific losses in memory several years ago. Three college aged kids killed in a car accident. It was incredibly well publicized across the nation. The father of two of the kids is a HS basketball coach, and he said the only time that the nightmare was minutely out of his mind was when he was coaching. I hope that's coaching has the same effect for Chris.

Everyone handles grief differently. Some may be painting him as an emotional wreck to shun others from posting any critiques which is truly disgusting. Maybe it's really affecting him but he's not showing it and that's why he hasn't missed time. Maybe he wants to take his mind off it and doesn't want pity. The point is, no one knows how he's feeling. I lost my father at 14 yrs old and it was sudden, but my view was that life goes on and there's nothing you can do to stop life from happening, so why let it hold you back? I didn't want pity.

I'm sorry for your loss and pain even after 5 years. One thing I reinforce to people is that the really great things about a loved ones make us who we are. They never really leave our consciousness, and hopefully you've had many days since where you can think of your sister and smile, remember a kindness of hers, or she is an example to you. Time may heal some wounds, but hopefully you've reached a point to be thankful for her love and caring for you and your family in her life.

We have some pretty talented psychologists and therapists on here who can help you deal with unresolved issues that certainly exist when a 14 year old loses his dad. If you don't know who they are PM me.

There is a difference between pity and respect and common decency which is what posters are asking for when they suggest we take a couple of days off from the negative critiques while Coach buries his brother and the team tries to pull one out tomorrow night which would make us all happy. Shouldn't be that difficult a concept to unite around. There will be plenty of time for the other stuff after the basketballs are put away.

Ladies and gents, here he is...your "moral superior". You really are the Teflon Don of the board since Fun left. I give credit where it's due. Notice how quickly he goes from "moral superior" to stating that anyone who loses a parent at a young age has "issues".

Dude, it’s just basic respect. For a man that is closing in on giving a decade of his life to playing and coaching at this school, our school.

And spent the rest of his years representing this school in a great way.

Everyone knows who feels what way about Chris and the staff. It’s been beaten to dead at this point.

And you know if we lose to DePaul all of the criticism will come out to play again. But it’s “disgusting” for some to ask for a couple days of respect?

Check out the first page of this thread. I was as pissed as anyone after the Xavier game. But after hearing the news, it’s just common decency to pump the brakes on all this negativity. Again, many are asking for just a couple days

You wouldn’t go to the funeral, walk up to Chris and say “Sorry for your loss, I still think you suck as a coach.”

So don’t be like that on here either. Like I said, the board will go back to being a sh*t show if we lose to DePaul so just wait for that if you wanna be a critic so bad.

No reason not to expect success similar to or close to what a Seton Hall or Providence has attained in recent years. Dancing three years out of five would be nice as a starter to cast the program in a more positive light. In that period one would hope to make some noise in the NCAA T which has eluded both SH & Providence.

I think we will have to be patient next season and sense some roster turnover of substance. That said, let’s let season play out and perhaps my caution will be proven wrong. Beat DePaul to get this bad taste out of our mouths & go from there!
Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but I think we can have some success next year. It really all depends to me on #1 who returns and #2 if Mack can be a main contributor from day one. We just appear to be so much more well balanced, will have size, and plenty of depth.

Also another wild card is what happens with our coaching situation and if that leads current players to leave if Mullin decides to leave.
Wouldn't expect as much stability with roster as hoped. Likely to lose a bunch unfortunately. Really tough to build programs with such frequent turnover and I think transfers aggravate that issue. Then you have guys who transfer several times like Owens and Dixon. We need some real legit 4 yr players who can contribute from day 1 and get better like Williams. By the time he's a senior, I'd expect him to be a damn good player with steady production. This is what Nova does so well. Transfers are good but in moderation IMO. Relying on them is a plan B out of necessity when top HS kids don't commit.
Look around the nation man. Every team has significant transfers. I think someone posted staggering stats showing 60% of kids will transfer by year 2.

You know why Nova has stability? They won 2 of the last 3 national titles. We can't even win a tourney game for 2 decades. How people try and compare us to Nova is beyond me.

I had some choice words for CM just days ago, but to sit here and say anything other than I hope he is surrounded by family and in the best possible spirits would be incensitve and in poor taste.

This is just a game, our passion runs so deep that it’s impossible to maintain perspective. But for just a day or two I don’t think it’s much to ask for this man and his family.

I hope we beat the shit out of DePaul tomorrow night and that this team rallies around their coach. If they don’t I’ll be incredibly disappointed but hopefully will maintain that perspective for at least a few extra days.
