I think what I'm most excited about in regard to the program is the state of the recruiting. Since I've been a fan starting in 2001 or so, I can't remember this level of high level recruiting going on. It seems we've got just about the best talent we've had in a very long time, and also are mentioned with many top recruits who are seriously considering us in the next few years.
I became a ST John's fan because of Chris Mullin. Wanted the Knicks to not win the Ewing Lottery so they could draft Mullin. Steve Lavin was a clunkhead and self promoter. Steve Lavin' first year was head and shoulders over anything Mullin has done here.
Just thought I would temper the hyperbole before people start getting carried away like the above poster.
If were talking about assembling talent . Id say comparing their 3rd years is pretty fair.

Would saying this roster is more talented be too outlandish?
All I said was his first recruiting class of Pointer, Harkless, Sampson, Garret and Harrison blows away anything we have seen since Fran was recruiting. I like Mullin and thought Lavin was a knucklehead but you have to give credit where credit is due.
In fact though not a recruiting expert by any means, Ponds is Mullin's only recruit on par with Pointer, Harrison, Garrett, Harkless, Sampson and Jordan who were all top 100 ESPN guys. I know Lovett's ranking was skewed and Simon was a top 100 guy but we are getting him after he flamed out at another school. I have no issue with the whole transfer thing but to me it is more impressive if you get them out of HS.
Why are Lovett, Yakwe, and Sid not on par with Garrett? All top 100 guys. My point was to back up room 112 who just said the recruiting under Mullin has been great. Looking at our roster it would say he is right.

Recruiting has been very good under Mullin. However, comparing the talent level of players in Mullin's and Lavin's first two seasons, I would give the nod to Lavin.
The following is from our own St. John's archives: "Lavin immediately inked consecutive top-10 classes in his first two years at St. John's, including a 2011 group that became his fourth-ever top 5 national class.
Lavin's first season, 2011, featured NBA players Maurice Harkless (15th overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft) and JaKarr Sampson, as well as D'Angelo Harrison, Phil Greene IV and Sir'Dominic Pointer. Lavin arrived in New York and was faced with the daunting task of filling 10 available scholarships for 2011-12."
In terms of impact talent, only Lovett and Ponds compare. Also, when one takes into account Amir Garrett and Norvel Pelle who did not play in year one, Lavin's initial recruiting class was phenomenal considering he had not coached in 6 years. Further, Lavin had inked talent like Rico Gathers who also never suited up. One can only imagine what could have been if not for his cancer set back, if Nurideen Lindsey had stayed, if Jordan was normal. It also remains to be seen how many Mullin recruits will stick as long as Harrison, Greene and Pointer.
Prior to the ineligibilities ESPN had SJU with the third best recruiting class in the country. Without Pelle, Sampson, Garret until late Dec. and the losing of Lindsey shortly after the start of the season destroyed that ranking. For a short period of time that was probably the best class in SJU's history.

He said it is the best he has seen since he has been a fan in 2001 which I disagree with. I thought Lavin brought in more talent. If you want to say he has been a way better recruiter than the last few years of Jarvis and what Norm did then I would absolutely agree.

You want to count Pelle then you can count zach brown too. Rankings and everything are fine and play a huge role. Those two rosters are what were accumulated through both first 3 years. I'll take Mullins and I was sure is shit happy about lavins roster.
I don't think any redmen and especially Chris Mullin want to be reminded of Zach Brown.

Too bad Julius went to UMass rather than Queens!
What was he doing on campus?
The man next to him is the ? new AD?
Thanks

All the recent debate about Jordan or Lebron being greatest of all time and every once in a while a Kobe gets thrown in there. NO ONE player defined the game more than Dr. J and I don't think it could ever be duplicated

Michael Jordan ain't chump change.
WisdomHow many times have STJ coaches brought multiple top 50 kids to campus as qualifying frosh in the same year?
97, Artest and Jessie
88 Sealy, Sprolling, Werdann
94 Zendon, Felipe (both top 5)
2011 Dom, Mo, D Lo
Any others?
Say what you want, the 2011 class was great by STJ standards and even better when Jakarr reupped and Jamal (#53) transferred in. If Pelle( #52) had made it it would be the best class ever for the school. End of story. And say what you want about Pelle but he's starting for a team in the top division in Italy, not a bad place to be, it was good enough for the Truth for many years.
Friend of mine from work was at it. Said Yakwe and Ponds are really good kidsWas at the Carnesecca/Mullin event yesterday.
Excellent turnout. Had 36 foursomes at Sands Point.
A lot more people, who didn't golf, showed up for dinner.
Think they will return there for next year's event.
President Bobby and his wife at the dinner.
Bill Wennington was a great MC.
Raised a lot of money for the basketball program.

You better than that Michael. Astour's statement has 3 ifs. I'll give you a better class with just two ifs-if we signed everyone in Duke's class and in Kentucky's class last year that would be the best class we ever signed.WisdomHow many times have STJ coaches brought multiple top 50 kids to campus as qualifying frosh in the same year?
