Skills for Life

I am as guilty as everyone but at least I am honest about it. Mullin has given us reason to hope because he is the greatest player in school history and any of us who saw him play are simply going to give him a pass. Tough to judge one way or another on last year but with that being said if his name was Joe Blow he would be getting killed on here.

A, if his name was Joe Blow they wouldn't have hired him. B, no coach in recent memory got killed after a year. Not Lavin, not Jarhead, not even Norm. Every one got a honeymoon. The only people questioning Mullin's competence after a year are Lavin's few remaining lickspittles.

No one had a first year like Mullin so would be tough to equate

No one was left with the circumstances he inherited, so it's easy to "equate".

Fran won 13 games, Norm won 9.

I guess Norm was a good comparison. And for the record I don't think Mullin should get killed. Just find it funny the posts about what great shape we are in and the direction we are going. While we are most def going to be better, if Mullin was not the name of the coach I just don't think there would be the same (blind) optimism.

I am in the camp of lets just see how it plays out and hopefully things work out. If they don't they don't and I am a Mullin guy. Just seems silly to keep ripping former guy. At worst Lavin was a shrug in the ST John's basketball history. We have more pressing problems currently.

If Mullin were not the coach there might not be the same blind optimism. But he is the coach. And if Joe Blow had assembled the staff Mullin has and had recruited two stellar classes in 12 months there would be reason for optimism. Just as there was reason for optimism after Lavin brought in Dunlap and recruited his first class. Even I was optimistic, and my glass is half full of bile.

I find bashing Lavin eminently entertaining. Because he was an awful coach and a worse human being and there is nothing better than kicking someone when he's down. In the meanwhile our pressing problems will work themselves out or won't with or without my commentary. Besdies its the off season and there's nothing else to do until you start making lists.

Not just you, bunch of other guys on these boards. Just for me personally considering what we have dealt with the last 15 years I find it hard to drum up any real Lavin disdain. I get Jarvis and Norm. Whatever floats people's boats I guess.

As for Mullin. Won loss record out the window, nothing about last year gave you some cause for...lets just say expectation lowering?

Most posts say you can't make a judgement about Mullin after last year. I disagree strongly because he showed his college basketball intelligence realizing that recruiting is probably eighty five per cent of the game by securing a tremendous staff.

I am pretty sure Chris Mullin and his family do not want anyone judging him on last year. In fact he seemed to go out of his way to distance himself form the disaster that was last year. Though I am sure they would appreciate your version of it ;)

Well if Fordham JJ post and Paultz's new Avatar are correct your theory takes a big hit as it seems Slice going bye bye

IMO losing Slice is not that big a deal. When he took off his Ky sweatshirt he lost most of his recruiting expertise.

In my opinion, he did fine at Pitt, is well respected & has good connections. It is shame to lose him, but life will go on when he departs.

Only problem with that reasoning is half the the enthusiasm about bringing in a novice coach was the Slice attachment. And since the other half of the excitement was because Chris Mullin was a great basketball player...well it is a pretty big hit .

The hope was it would take time but eventually Slice would bring in players we hadn't gotten in a long time.

Not happy Slice is leaving. But Matts seems to be doing an excellent job. Maybe we can get a guy like Dunlap. As much as Slice was respected on the recruiting trail, there was no experienced ,expert coaching mind to help Mullin, on the staff. I like the idea of coaches complimenting one another. W Matt and Slice we hade 2 recruiters. IMO an experienced coach ,XO guru would be helpful. I don't think St Jean is experienced enough to qualify. Although I like him, and his future looks bright.

This has been brewing, which means a solution/replacement plan has been brewing just as long...and I'm sure Slice's next move has also been in the works as well. If it wasn't working out, no need to stick it out and try to make the best of it.

I'm sorry but you need a time out. Mullin could have brought in Norm and Father Harrington as assistants and the enthusiasm level would have been the same.

Way to lazy to look it up but I absolutely remember you on JJ using Slice as part of your argument against anyone showing any concern regarding a potential Mullin hiring.

Based off of last year losing Slice has no bearing on the team. However, having Slice on board meant the promise of better players to come.

If Mullin would have brought in Norm I would have changed my name to WE ARE MARSHALL and started rooting for them.

One sure way to get me to stop questioning things and blindly jump back on the bandwagon would be for him to hire Walter Berry. He does that and they could both sit on the scorers table sipping iced tea while Flag Boy draws up plays and I would be content.

To paraphrase, someone said "slice is coming" and I said if so I am too. But BR was just slicing on the cake.

Here's the analogy, because I know you love them. Saint John's hires SJU grad Amedeo Modigliani - who loved to paint fat broads, which you love also - to teach art. Great. He brings in Picasso as an assistant art teacher. Even better. But if he'd brought in Bob Ross I'd have been just as enthused. Because he's Modigliani. Slice leaving isn't a positive. But it's not a negative until it's a negative. All I've been reading for six months is how the other guy who's name I can't be bothered to learn how to spell (ablawhatever) is the man. Until we stop recruiting the enth rated class in the country I don't care who's doing the recruiting.

I sure do miss Flagboy :(

Wow, I am shocked that they couldn't get on the same page. Also hard to believe Slice is going to get paid as well as he is now. Unless Kentucky takes him back?
