Skills for Life

Did I miss an announcement that Slice was leaving?
Or is this just speculation?

Rumor has it he is not happy. Has not been approachable on campus for quite a while. Not sure what he is unhappy about what with a fat contract and a very beautiful young wife but his unhappiness is visible when he has made appearances. Does this look happy to a future recruit?

Funny.
Not criticizing Slice, but what kids is he credited with recruiting since he's been coaching?

IMO losing Slice is not that big a deal. When he took off his Ky sweatshirt he lost most of his recruiting expertise.

In my opinion, he did fine at Pitt, is well respected & has good connections. It is shame to lose him, but life will go on when he departs.

Wow, I am shocked that they couldn't get on the same page. Also hard to believe Slice is going to get paid as well as he is now. Unless Kentucky takes him back?

Slice doesn't need to get paid, he has a guaranteed contract. Let's see who fills the position but Slice had a very good track record in the NY NJ area which went with his good reputation built up over years of successfull recruiting.

The other Hall of farmer is getting bumped up once this goes down.

That is what I figured / assumed would happen.
Thank you for confirming same.
Coach Richmond has a fantastic personal track record. I assume that can be parlayed into a successful coach.
I truly believe recruiting is 75% or greater of the battle with the remaining 25 % allocated between 20% off season and in season workouts and coaching and 5% in game coaching.
Coach Richmond could excel at this task.
He certainly carries credibility walking into a recruits home and like Coach Mullin gave 110% to get the most out of his skills.
Could end up working out very well for us.

If Richmond is bumped up & $$ is a big issue, I would not be surprised if they don't fill the Special Assistant slot now held by Mitch.

Everything is negotiable, even in iron clad contracts. If we do hire a special assistant if MR is promoted, my money is on a former coach who can teach defense because last year we played a little defense with the emphasis on "little".

I nominate Katie Morgan. She has or had not sure if they are repeats a show on HBO where she stands there naked with just high heels. The catch is on the episode I saw, she was wearing glasses and writing something on a chalkboard. That immediately makes her qualified to be an assistant under Mullin. Have her draw up plays naked and no one will ever complain that Mullin does not know how to use the dryboard.

If my memory is correct, Katie Morgan said in an interview that she does not do anal. That might be a disqualifier---depending on one's predilections.

I have no idea what short term effects this will have on the program. But at least now everyone can move on, and the "Where's Slice" questions can be put to rest.

And that is a positive, imo.

Understand that this is a business where things can change quickly, relationships are nuanced, and a lot goes on behind the scenes. But this one is surprising even with that backdrop. All the energy and money spent to get Slice, he leaves Kentucky to come here, joins his childhood friend to revive a program in his hometown...and with all of that we barely make it a year?

If this is happening don't doubt there are reasons why, and certainly have its potential impact in perspective, but unfortunately this just projects more instability (with a well respected and connected guy in the industry) and we've had plenty of that the last 20 years. And a staff of which the primary external criticism is inexperience gets more inexperienced. Not a great look this early in the new tenure, but hopefully in a weird way this is a short term step back yielding to a bigger picture decision.

All the more value in our Elite camp with invites to HS/ AAU coaches - we need to further positive ties to NJ and vicinity with or without Slice.
And who knows the true machinations here - he was paid enough to work in something he knows and loves...unrealistic expectations on someone's part...someone " too (demanding and) big for his britches "...?

Would have loved to see Jim Baron as assistant. Fingers crossed that Richmond can teach X's and O's, but going by interviews I've heard with him, I think he'll be a good recruiter.

Hey, here's an idea.... anybody know what Jim Barron is up to these days?

I've heard Dennis Wolff is itching to get his name thrown into another St. John's coaching search.

Question is, would Richmond want to put up with the demanding grind of recruiting?

I'm not sure I want him here if he's not going to recruit. I'd rather have a proven X's and O's guy if the lead assistant wants to stay at the office.

We haven't even finished throwing the best recruiter in college BB under the bus, can we wait a bit before throwing the hall of famer under there too?

Four NCAA appearances between them in 46 years. No wins. Obviously they are genyiouses.

Seeing Wolff here would make me ill. But Baron is known as a guy who can take a down program and make it competitive. Unfortunately, not known for taking the next step up from competitive, but I think he'd be an excellent assistant somewhere.
