Orlando is as gifted a player as I’ve coached in my career. He's comfortable playing 4 positions. A very special talent and person. #stjbb

Frontline depth will pay dividends. Chris O'bekpa, God's Gift, Chris Jones, Orlando Sanchez, and Jakarr Sampson
give STJ balance up front

Is this info we need to conclude GG will return? Lavin tweeted this minutes ago...

Now I just want him to tweet something like "Our guard play will be solid too with the return of D'Angelo Harrison"

Does Coach Lavin thinks Obekpa is Irish? Nice to hear that GG is returning. STJ is very fortunate to have both GG and Sanchez playing next season with an extra year under their belts. This time last year it looked like both would be gone after the season.

Not so fast!
This error is a classic Signorelli parapraxis. Lavin obviously could not remember the name of the 6'11 African center he had just received a conditional verbal from and the closest he came was O'Bekpa.
My guess is Gift is actually transferring to pursue his M.A. In African Studies at Howard.

He almost does, but basically with this little run of tweets, we can take that GG will be back, so will Jones, and Dee is working hard to get there.

“@STJCoachLavin: Jakarr Sampson and Phil Greene IV win the Co-MVP award for #Stjbb team at the 67th Annual Athletic Awards Banquet.”

Looks like the sportswriter who gave Carmelo Anthony one vote in the NBA MVP voting dropped one on Phil too.

Every single announcer that covered our games spoke very highly of Phil Greene. The coaching staff loves him and Dunlap loved the kid last year.

Announcers (unless they're homers like Tarik) wouldn't have followed Phil all year. Maybe would watched tape from a game or 2.

Valuable Phil was not. Serviceable, yes.

My post was in jest and I hope the co-award brings Phil some confidence heading into the summer.

Confidence ... and better shot selection. Phil's a great kid who makes too many bad decisions. Hopefully, that will change with maturity.

Imo, Phil didn't take bad shots. He just didn't make as many as we would hope. He did a good job getting open and most of his shots were not tightly contested. He just needs to become a better long distance shooter. He also doesn't have the court vision that a natural pg would have. That is because he isn't a pg. not his fault.

Congrats to Jakarr and Phil.

Very well said simplyred. Phil seems like a fantastic kid and a is solid player. A lot of the inconsistency with Phil's play has not been his fault, as he has been put in a role (in large part out of necessity) the last two years that isn't a natural fit for his skillset. He's not a pure point and that's primarily what he's played for us. I think as a 6th/7th man off the bench looking to provide a scoring spark in 20-25 minutes a game will net more production from Phil than in the 30+ mpg he's given us as a starter at the point.

Hopefully this co-MVP award (which I would assume is determined by the coaches) is a result of Phil's incredible work-ethic in practice and overall team mentality. From all accounts he has both in spades. If it is a reflection of the staff's view of his in-game play this season that is somewhat concerning moving forward. Lavin has a quick hook with some and lets others play though mistakes, and Phil is probably his #1 guy in the latter category. We look to have an extremely deep and talented backcourt next year. Phil is an important part of that, but there will no longer be a necessity to play a 37% shooter from the field and 23% shooter from 3 who averaged less than 3 assists and 3 boards (under 1 each for every 10 minutes of play) 30+ mpg. With the depth we have at the 1-2 positions Phil either needs to (1) play better to warrant those minutes, or (2) play less. I'm not entirely confident that will be Lavin's evaluation process, as Phil seems to be a favorite of his.

My dear Redken, SJUAlum98, Marillac:

I appreciare your respective commentaries.
With all his possible gyrations, deficits and virtures,

I still like Phil! Even "as is" with a no return policy. Without the standard NCAA three year 36,000 minute PT warranty.
If this were the Jarvis-Roberts dynasty (circa, what was that, 2500 B.C.???) Phil Greene would be our shining star.

Thanks fellows and gals.

all the best

IMO just about any shot Phil takes from beyond the 3-point line is a bad shot. And dribbling aimlessly from side to side while the clock is running down, then hoisting up a prayer, is bad decision making ... and you don't have to be a natural PG to see that. Again, here's hoping that with another year's experience under his belt, Phil will have a better understanding of his strengths and weaknesses. If he does, his contribution to the team will be greater even though his PT is will likely be less.

Sounds about right. Good guy, and not a bad player necessarily. Plus, his midrange game and floaters in the lane are actually superb. It takes years for guys to learn how to do that. He does it naturally.
But he doesn't have the court vision of a point guard, and he can't shoot well enough outside to be a real threat as a shooting guard. That's just the truth. Good at a couple things, but several big deficiencies that aren't likely to be overcome.
