SJU vs Pitt Game Thread

Agree w/ joe3. And dlo is killing us. So frustrating to watch. No half-court offense and no smarts. Tried to be optimistic. But no way we can erase anything bigger than a 5 point deficit. Oh well. Onto providence.

It's not on DLo, this loss is on the coaching staff plain and simple. While DLo was killing the team with not just poor shooting but invisible defense and poor offensive decisions ( how many times will he penetrate with his high dribble and lose the ball), it's up to coach Lavin to put his butt on the bench where it belonged. If you watched the game, you would have noticed that the team played more cohesively when he was on the bench.

I am not realy that upset as I don't think this team is capeable of wining another game before the BE tourney. There is too much right now going against them re. their overated personal, poor defense and loss of personal . For all those who penciled in Providence as a win, think again.

We played with Pitt and actually outplayed them for 30 minutes. Sucks that the wheels fell off. Lets win these last three and make a run in BET and go dancing!!

Jack I really need to ask you something.
We see how we play against the better B.E. teams, we not not very good vs. them. If the last 3 were against DePaul, USF and SHU then i`d agree and say yeah lets win the last 3 games, we will play @ PC (they are better especially the game being in their house, @ ND (that`s a loss, and Vs Marquette (that`s probably a loss as well).
To me they`ll lucky to get one of the last 3.

Listen I`m a die hard Redmen fan (yeah please call these guys Johnnies, because they`ll never the Redmen.), I`m still waiting for MSG to rock for SJU like in the 80s. Not just once every 5,6 years we are good but year in and year out.

So Jack here`s the question. Please I`d like to know this especially after todays game.
WTF really makes you think that we are going to win the last 3 games? I would seriously like to know this.
Yeahj hoping is all good but you can hope all you want but it`s not going to happen.

I think we can win these three because

a) I like how we matchup against Providence, plus a week to prepare for them, we can win that

b) I don't know why you said @ ND is a guaranteed loss, DePaul lost in OT against ND twice this year, one at ND, So why Am I crazy for thinking they can beat ND?

c) Weeks ago people on here were breaking down our schedule saying Marquette is one of hardest games of the year, so I've watched their last 3 or 4 games. How do I describe those games? UNIMPRESSED. Overrated, lazy D, and struggle on the road
Good points, very smart for a 15 year old. I like the optimism. I would add on Notre Dame if we beat them once already there is absolutely no reason why we can't beat them again. I do think you are being a little harsh on Marquette although I believe we have a decent chance to beat them.

Relax...the kid's a minor.

I said the same exact thing in Vegas once! Luckily, my flight was departing in 3 hours.

By the way, "idiot in graduate school for psychology" is an oxymoron. The idiots get filtered out well before that.

I beg to differ. Idiots come in all shapes and sizes...and with all kinds of degrees. (Not directed specifically at you, Joe. Just sayin'.)

Yea I am not denying they are a good team but they are a top 15 team when playing at home, and when they aren't, they just look average. Believe me I am as optimistic as they come but I wouldn't give us a chance if we were playing Marquette at their place. But at MSG I can see us beating them in a tight one

Actually we never really threatened after the 15 minute mark of the second half. Unfortunately the game is 40 minutes long so saying we played with anyone for a period of time means nothing at this point. You are what your record says you are but at this point that's not the case. We will be what we are after the next three games. When we were in 4 th place in the conference and all the optimists were touting us as a tourney team, we had the benefit of playing the 3 weakest teams in the league for 5 straight games. Once we played the good teams, it was a different ball game. We are the same team that had those bad losses early on. We did improve slightly with the addition of Branch but injuries are part of the game and the good teams, programs have a way around them.

So again, just remember, the game is 40 minutes long. The selection committee will only see the lopsided end results, not how well be competed for part of the game.

12:11 mark of 2nd half Chris hit both FT's and it was a 3 point game. All downhill after that.

After today, spending a lot of my money on the game and watching the terrible second half, I have gotten used to the fact that we will probaby be a NIT team. Hey let's win it like we did in 2003!

As the first half ended, I looked up and felt we were extremely lucky to still be in the game the way we played. I didn't see a single run of solid, spirited basketbakk in the first half. I took a bathroom break at the end of the halftime break and got back two my seat two minutes after the second half started and we had a one point lead. We then proceeded to continue to stink up the place as we did in the first half. I kept looking at the bench and wondering why Sampson was sitting so long. I wondered if Branch felt sore since he sat the entire seocnd half. I wondered why Marc-Antoine (yes I'm still cranky) was anchored to the bench, all while the other guys hoisted forced shots sometimes with 35 seconds on the shot clock.

I don't think trying anything else would have helped, and actually I don't think it would have. But I certainly wouldn't have sat Sampson so long, and if Brnach was okay we play smarter with him in there. And for God's sake, if Greene and Harrison don't respect Marco enough to give him the ball when he's open, then bench one or all of them.

Zagoria tweeted "coke Job, SJU, no heart.. Can't deny..

AZ is as angry as the rest of us that watched us self-destruct in the last 10 minutes of the game.
That is when we "choked". If it were a coke job, we would have played much much faster.
Speaking of choking....it appeared every single time out Lavin called the team came out and coughed up a turnover or did the opposite of what was designed (if there was a play designed). The lack of collective focus of these players is disappointing.

NIT means nothing. It's an embarrassment if anything. This is a team with great recruits, and a great coach in the basketball mecca of the world on the biggest stage. We deserve MUCH better. This program has been terrible for too long. Just when you think things are due to change finally, they revert to how things have been. All the top level NYC talent leaves us in the dust (except Harkless) for teams like Pitt, UConn, Cuse, Cincy, etc. Just another team that flirts with you then rips your heart out. Unless Sanchez somehow gets cleared for next year, Harrison improves DRAMATICALLY, and Hooper is the real deal, then I'm not even confident we make the tourney next year either.

I completely disagree with you on pretty much every aspect of this post. First, this team is not an embarrassment. It's a team full of freshmen and sophomores that have played 1 year together. They have had games where they looked great and games where they have looked awful. I think it's pretty evident at this point that they are not as good as the upper echelon teams in the conference and that's not shocking. Teams like Syracuse and Louisville have older players who have been through the trials and tribulations of conference play and are battled tested. Will St. John's take that step next year? Well, that's entirely up to them. If they can learn from their disappointments this year and work on the flaws, then yes the team will be better.

Also, using the word great so loosely is a pet peeve of mine. I think in general it has lost its significance nowadays. St. John's doesn't have great players on it nor is our coach great. Lavin is a very good coach who has a solid track record. But he is not Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Jim Boeheim, Coach K, Bill Self, Roy Williams, etc. He put out a consistently solid team at UCLA and he seems to have STJ on the right track. But great he is not ... yet. And none of our recruits are great. They have talent and aspects of their game are strong, but until they do it on the big stage, I wouldn't put them in that category.

Jim - I know it wasn't on just dlo. Thus the 'no half court offense and no smarts'. And i know we played better w/ him on bench. This game just made it crystal clear we are not an NCAA team. Just really frustrated right now.

Very few people expected us to be an NCAA team at the beginning of the season. While this loss was disappointing, this team has probably exceeded the majority of people's expectations just by being in the conversation. I predicted 21 wins (including BET), so they are 3 games behind where I thought they would be at this point. But I still hold out hope for 20 wins and a bid. What can I say? I'm the eternal optimist.

Yeah, that's exactly it. You should change your name.

I believe that we lost this game because Jamal Branch was not able to play. He tried but his game is based on quickness and cuts and he was not able to do that. We all know that he is our only real point guard and can direct an offense. At the beginning of the second half we were up 31-30 but could not generate any offense. Jamal would have been the difference in this game. Rather than talk about how terrible we are, I am hoping that Jamal will be able to play at his normal level before the season is over. If this happens, I believe we can compete with most teams.

Branch injury far more costly than reported; part of having a floor general is troops knowing where to be as plays evolve and expecting what the general will do with the ball. What it looks like when it works is Georgetown dissecting Syracuse. Branch injury cost us the reps with freshmen and sophomore team to build cohesiveness. What is on the coach is that it does not appear that he planned for a true point earlier as Lindsey now at Rider does not seem to fit the bill and Malik Stith was not the answer which Lavin already knew.
