SJU Trivia

Felton was also the head coach at South Carolina for a few years (late 80's - early 90's?)

George was one of many New York kids Frank McGuire signed to play in Columbia. I think he was on the same team as John Roche, Tom Riker and Owens from the Catholic leagues. They were in the ACC back then.

Felton came after them and played, from what I can gather, only a few games during the '73-'74 season (with Alex English, Mike Dunleavy & Brian Winters). The Roche/Riker/Owens (and Bobby Cremins) team of '69-'70 were SI's pre-season No. 1 team. I remember that well because I was in basic training at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, and on my first weekend pass I went to town and everyone was boasting about it. I politely kept my mouth shut, but under my breath I was seething, thinking: "Yeah South Carolina is great ... except that it has a New York City coach and all New York players."

Small world redken! I did my basic at Jackson in 72 and spent 6 months in Columbia for AIT and remember attending a game at the Coliseum. George definitely played with Tom Owens but you are right about Roche and Riker. Felton was on the freshman team at the time. USC went into decline after leaving the ACC.

Are you sure you saw Felton and Owens on the same team? As noted above, Felton "played" for USC in '73-'74, whereas Owens was playing in the ABA in '71-'72. Could it be, like me, you had a toot or two during your weekend passes that may have distorted your memory?

P.S. We'll have to meet some time next season to compare our Ft. Jackson experiences.

Roche on the Nets was so inconsistent. I recall in consecutive games he went for 31 and than was scoreless.

George played for All Hallows. The other guys you mentioned played for LaSalle.

Riker was a Long Island kid.
Owens and Roche were city kids who played at La Salle Academy.
Roche had the best hops in the city.

Kevin Winters would argue with that. Roche was a great guard though. You are right on Riker who played at St. Doms.

Brian Winters?

Sorry, Kevin Joyce

In your defense (not that you need it), in my memory, Brian Winters and Kevin Joyce are one and the same ... Archbishop Molloy kids in succession, same size, similar skills.

I don't remember them to be similar at all. Winters was a lights out shooter as a guard. Joyce was a rock solid body who did most things well but wasn't as big a scorer. I didn't see them play in HS. Joyce was the superior athlete of the two, and I wouldn't call them clones of each other. Would like to hear form others who might disagree.

I did see them play a lot & agree with your distinctions. Never thought Winters would be better in long run, but he was.

LMAO!!
You are most likely correct as my memory of those days was quite fogged as you indicated! Spent so many weekends on the USC campus trying to get laid more than I should have and up and down Main street were pictures of all the players we mentioned in every store. They were idols to those southern bigots at the time. Irish Catholic kids from NY like their coach.

Beast, I yield to you. I have a good recollection of Winters from his NBA days with the Bucks (he was included in the deal that sent Kareem to the Lakers), but am foggy about Joyce, who, having a brief run in the ABA, is someone who I didn't get to see much of.

Aside from Chris Mullin, what former St. John's player scored the most points in the NBA? (see if you can get it without the googles)

Mark Jackson? Was tempted to throw Kevin L out there, but he played in ABA so long.

Before he retired from the NBA after a 10 year career , this former St. John's player was the third leading scorer in league history.

Not only that, but he was the youngest person to be named First Team All-League for more than 60 years when he was selected at the age of 21. This record stood for decades until it was broken by LeBron James. He was a four time first team all NBA and led the league in scoring one year.

If you can name him without using the Internet, you have my undying respect because I never heard of this guy.

What's really puzzling is your phrase "I never heard of this guy." Given the pro career this guy had, it's hard to believe that posters who go back a ways (even before my time) wouldn't have heard of him. I guess my question is: How far back does your memory of St. John's basketball go? Is this player someone whose name older (much older) posters would be familiar with, even though you're not, or was he so obscure a player at St. John's that it's unlikely anyone remembers him a Redmen? Bottom line: I have a name in mind. It's just a guess: I have no idea how long he played in the NBA; I never saw him play; but I do remember first hearing his name as a kid, and I know he had the reputation of a big-time scorer. ... But here's the rub: His name is far from unheard of among long-time fans, so I'm scratching my head.

I remember Roche on the Nets being such a chucker who would fire at will. If I'm not mistaken there was some video of Carnesecca, bleeping out the profanity each time Roche launched an ill advised shot every time he touched the ball.
