SJU Trivia

In either 1950 or 1951 the NCCA required all conference champions to appear in the NCAA tournement. As a transitional step teams could play in both tournements for 3 years

George Felton, who was on Mahoney's staff.

Yes, only lasted a few years. Eventually went on to Kentucky to assist Tubby.

He may have been more qualified than Mahoney to take over post-Louie.

From what I remember, he was known more as recruiter a la Barry Rhorssen.

I believe he had some personal baggage at the time we took him on. DUI arrest, and breakup of his marriage, if I remember correctly. Was never really a HC candidate on the college level again.

Felton was also the head coach at South Carolina for a few years (late 80's - early 90's?)

Yes. I am not sure if he came straight here after he got let go from there or not.

That's it. He was booted after the '90-'91 season. I recall he had a big win versus UNC during the early part of that particular season. I remember clownin' a few folks in school (who were Tar Heel fans) for the loss to the Gamecocks.

I ran into Felton a couple times at the Peach Jam several years ago. He was a solid recruiter. That is also the story on him, 61982.

George was one of many New York kids Frank McGuire signed to play in Columbia. I think he was on the same team as John Roche, Tom Riker and Owens from the Catholic leagues. They were in the ACC back then.

George played for All Hallows. The other guys you mentioned played for LaSalle.

Riker was a Long Island kid.
Owens and Roche were city kids who played at La Salle Academy.
Roche had the best hops in the city.

Kevin Winters would argue with that. Roche was a great guard though. You are right on Riker who played at St. Doms.

Felton came after them and played, from what I can gather, only a few games during the '73-'74 season (with Alex English, Mike Dunleavy & Brian Winters). The Roche/Riker/Owens (and Bobby Cremins) team of '69-'70 were SI's pre-season No. 1 team. I remember that well because I was in basic training at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, and on my first weekend pass I went to town and everyone was boasting about it. I politely kept my mouth shut, but under my breath I was seething, thinking: "Yeah South Carolina is great ... except that it has a New York City coach and all New York players."

Sorry, Kevin Joyce

Sorry, Kevin Joyce

In your defense (not that you need it), in my memory, Brian Winters and Kevin Joyce are one and the same ... Archbishop Molloy kids in succession, same size, similar skills.

Agree Ken, great Stanners!

I saw Roche play for the Nets and Riker with the Knicks (okay, he didn't play much but was on the team). Winters played for the Bucks. Don't remember really seeing Joyce play (didn't he play college ball for UNC?)

Joyce spent three seasons with three different ABA teams.

Small world redken! I did my basic at Jackson in 72 and spent 6 months in Columbia for AIT and remember attending a game at the Coliseum. George definitely played with Tom Owens but you are right about Roche and Riker. Felton was on the freshman team at the time. USC went into decline after leaving the ACC.
