SJU to Nike

The St John's 5 year contract with Under Armour concludes this year. They will go back to Nike after this season. Leaving Seton Hall as the lone Under Armour sponsored program in the Big East.

Per Basketball Diary

Don't like how political they've been getting lately, but their products are very good quality and many players would rather rock Nike shoes no doubt compared to UA. My main concerns are:

1) Can we keep the current St. John's font we currently have on the jerseys? I'd hate to go back to the huge block letters that have no character or style.

2) As one of the biggest critics, I have to say that UA gave us a lot to choose from. Even though it was a while ago, I remember Nike only giving us like 2-3 shirts that were bland and our jerseys were rarely creative. Would also like to see our stuff sold at Bob's, Costco, Dick's, Modell's, LID's, etc. locally within 50 miles of campus. I know people have said it's based on demand and casual fans don't want it, but I bet more would sell than you'd think. We are a major program and should market ourselves as one. We can get 17-18,000+ fans to games in a year we aren't even that great. Tons of alumni and tons of casual SJ fans. Don't believe they wouldn't sell at those stores.

The font belongs to SJU.

I don't really follow this stuff, what would be the biggest benefit in switching? Shoes for the players? I'd think that Nike would have to be more popular. Anybody know why we chose UA? Was it a cost thing?

In terms of apparel, I haven't been impressed with UA. I see a ton of nice looking shirts/hoodies/etc that the players wear, but none of that is available to the public. I do have a nice looking #11 (Harrison) jersey that I guess will be outdated now.

UA I know was a big up and comer a couple decades ago with MLB, and when we signed people seemed optimistic. Not sure how much they've grown during the past 5 years, but no doubt Nike is a bigger name.

Would hope part of the deal was to get a few special edition jerseys. Not sure if this is possible but I know Air Jordan is a Nike sub brand. Would be cool if we could get some Air Jordan stuff. Players would go nuts for that. I wish we chose a different alternate logo instead of the "New York's Team" with the white graffiti writing. I would've made a more polished exclusively basketball logo similar to the Air Jordan years when we had the SJU in the basketball. Think the current alternate logo is too messy IMO but I get what they were going for (more street).

When we went UA however many years ago we were the little fish in the big pond at Nike. Not getting attention and love on a number of fronts. From custom gear, to exposure out at retail and I'm sure $ as well. We became the big fish in the small pond as UA was really starting to ramp up its college biz. However UA has had plenty of issues of late. Quickly they started to add others schools that deflected attention. Seton Hall from a local standpoint. Nationally Notre Dame, Utah, UCLA couple others I forget.

UA is definitely taking a step back in terms of league/school partnerships of late. Their MLB deal fell apart before it even started which was alarming.

Doubt we would be a Jordan team again. So you can forget that.

I don't care if Skechers or Tory Burch had the relationship so long as we are competitive. B)

Guess I'll have to buy my all my SJU gear now.........I'll NEVER buy another Nike product again.

Oh great.........

Delighted to see us back not the Nike train. I had high hopes for UA when they looked like the up-and-comers in the industry. I'm not convinced they can hang with the big boys.

No question that Nike is No. 1. Might as well hang with the best...

“The Firing Squad” :)

FYI, I wouldn't expect much. When we were Nike before, items were scarce. The only time I was able to grab some cool stuff, was when the school had a fire sale of all the Team Gear when the UA move was made.

You should order from that store that won't sell Nike. Oh wait, they went out of business.
