SJU Power Forward Portal Targets

Ok now that it's public can say this ..have spoken last few days with kid and his ppl ... yes it's about money but if it's even close they are really interested in how he'll be used and featured and how that helps his nba prospects. Example..in Lakers workout saw him as a 3 who needed better off dribble shot and wing D stopping penetration...he wants to be used in a way that helps him and not as a filler for a teams need..which btw is EXACTLY right approach. What school does that in combo with money...will come down to 3 as i understand with SJU right there
correct me if I'm wrong, or perhaps my interpretation is off, but what you said suggests that he basically wants to go to a team where he can be the primary #1 option and really showcase himself. I understand that may be the best option for his future prospects, but if that is the case, perhaps that does not align with SJU and what Pitino wants and how the team has been built thus far?

I think he would absolutely be a top 2-3 offensive option on the team, but I don't think the players on the roster allow for just one alpha male type offensive threat and everyone else being second.

Interesting about him improving off the dribble, that is one of the biggest things I noticed as well on him. He moves like Kadary (more methodical and uses his size and strength as opposed to speed and quickness via dribble moves) but has to work on creating his own shot, and getting space on those jumpers.

Pitino will give him the opportunity to defend 2-4 and gives his players a ton of leeway on offense.

He’d have enough opportunity to show what he is or isn’t.

Don't think being the primary option necessarily means its the best way to showcase someone for the NBA/what they have in mind.

If anything, teams may be more impressed if they can assimilate in a competitive environment on a very good team and adapt to their role on it.

but the player themselves have to want that kind of role - that's why I'm curious from SJU79 if my interpretation is correct or not

100%! I am also curious. It was definitely open to plenty of different interpretations. I just think some people associate pro aspirations/"playing for scouts" to be a negative connotation, when that doesn't have to be the case.

Castle on UConn is going to be a top 7 pick and he was a good all around player not the number 1 option. In fact he was like 5th option. But also a Frosh…..

Right. I think it's natural for someone like him to want to emphasize on the feedback he got from NBA scouts. There's definitely a way to incorporate that into the offense. He showed this year with FSU he can be a versatile offensive option. But you have to look at the pieces around him. I think he fits into the offense perfectly next to Deivon and Kadary with his shooting as well as how he can get to the rim as well, he's a three level scorer.

You factor in the ability to play in the Big East, at MSG, have Pitino and staff develop him for a year, and you hope that's a very attractive opportunity on top of the obvious NIL ask that it would take.

And Pitino's defensive system is perfect for him as well.

they are completely different type of players, age is also in play with Castle, Castle is a freak of nature athlete, Watkins doesn't have that in him.
I think your downplaying Watkins athletic ability a bit IMO

So playing for the team and to win is now considered being “filler”? The rest of the team should be subjugated so he can work on his ‘pro” game, I would not touch that with a 10 foot pole but that’s just me.

When you are viewed as a young prospect with a considerable amount of upside, sometimes being in a situation where you’re not asked to do too much, and risk potentially showing what your incapable of, is the best thing for you.

I don’t think we have the type of roster where Watkins could get lost in the shuffle. I also there’s better than decent chance he’d be the primary scorer anyway.

I'm sorry for both the confusion and my general lack or articulation :)
He's fine fitting into an offensive and not being the primary option..,what the concern is some school might use him out of position out of a lack of depth at that position. He had a school reach out that thought he'd make a good point foward and primary ball handler ..no interest. Had a team with a good post that wanted him to with 2 man with him...no interest in being a spot up shooter. How he's used, where he's used is more important then everything running through him

Makes a ton of sense.

One thing I'd say is that the plan seems to have always been to get Smith/Kadary/Omier. So logically, it seems fair to assume we'll be offering the Omier money. That should be quite the hefty chunk.

Not saying you're wrong. Hell, I'm going to self-impose a ban of myself watching anymore highlights until a decision's made. But we've definitely got money to still spend.
I understood our plan was to get omier and one of Kadary and Smith, but what do I know
