SJU Portal Targets

Every indication is he’s a big target for us

Talent is undeniable. Was pretty brutal down the stretch efficiency wise, was never the same after his injury. I'm sure lots of that could be attributed to the unstructured offense of Bobby Hurley not putting his players in positions to be efficient.

Graded a negative defensive player by both EvanMiya and BartTorvik which is very concerning. But seems to have the size and athleticism to be useful on that end. Hopefully that's just another Hurley thing but I wouldn't expect him to be a shutdown defender.

Hopkins is really good. He also has shown some signs of being an okay shooter. You take him and figure it out.

I do not necessarily agree. I thought that he was overrated a couple of years ago when some people thought he was the best player in the league. He has good skills for his size, his shot was developing, but to me he was nothing more than a good PF in a relatively slow-paced system.

At this point he hasn't played in two years, basically. And I believe some of that was purely by choice which is not a decision I am enthused about.

So I have no idea how Bryce Hopkins today compares to Bryce Hopkins 2 years ago, plus I have to project him to a non-Ed Cooley program. And I suspect he will want to be paid as though he is the same guy from 2 years ago and will translate perfectly.

Bottom line is lots of financial risk and an opportunity cost from bringing him in. I would not be in a "pay for the name" frame of mind and would pass.

If he wants to take a reasonable NIL number and is ok with the expectation of being a 6th or 7th man, that's a different conversation. I would be fine with that. But I am not investing in him as a top player with a team that has aspirations. Let Cooley have him.

6th or 7th man? 😆

He was almost the Big East player of the Year his last full season. If he's healthy, he's playing 30 minutes.

Gonna guess that guys like Daniss, Walter Clayton and others didn’t have that defense before Rick hit his hands on them. Big athletic kid wjth talent who can score and be taught SJU’s way of defense.

Hope so. But this is a climate now where you have to teach these guys your way of doing things in months not years. Clearly Rick hated the defense of last year's team and they finished 57th in KP on that side of the ball, so he wasn't able to turn that group around quickly.
