SJU Portal Targets

If the transfer portal remains ss is without any guidelines the mid major schools will lose their best players to the majors and struggle even more to draw fans which is a major challenge right now.
Also the major schools will offer scholarships to the top fifty or so high stool players.Players who can contribute immediately or otherwise go to the portal where you have a much better idea if that player can contribute immediately.
It won’t be worth while to have players like Lefty, Prey,Glover and even Wilcher on your roster. How many hundreds of thousands of dollars has SJU invested for their minor contributions and how much coaching effort has been invested.
Isn’t it a better system of signing players in the portal who have one ,two or even three years experience.
If players don’t have to commit for at least a two year period just about all will enter the portal every year looking for a better situation.

This is amazing News there are tons of great players in the portal but Sanon was definitely one of the guys I most wanted. To have him locked up already is amazing these kids seeing a packed Garden rocking this year is such a boost to our recruiting , along with Pitino of course we have become a destination!

We are not going to find a player better than Kadary so it is tough to compare it like this
I’m not so sure. Kadary was a great distributor, excellent on D and probably the toughest guard in the country going to the hole but his shooting really held him (and us) back.

I do like having 2 guys who can be the primary ball handler on the court together. Will miss that flexibility but I’ll take the 3pt shooter to open up the floor for everyone else as long as they’re going to put in the effort on D.

College sports are on the way to ruin. It’s really a professional league. Every year we basically re-set the Roster. It’s even more wide open than MLB. Don’t like your Roster? Go get 10 new guys! Right now we are in a great position because we have someone helping to Finance it all. At some point we will need more guys to Finance it. Right now sustainable but the future???

All I can do is ride it to the bottom until someone, anyone can define some type of guardrails.

We can and will find players who can shoot the ball, which will help our team and offense in ways this past years team didn't.

However I am still confident in saying that no one we grab in the portal will come in and all around be better than Kadary. Doesn't mean our team can't be better, but he was just a unicorn in some of the things he did so well, I don't think we find that. Remember, he was ranked the #1 portal guy last season. It was the modern equivalent of getting the #1 overall recruit. Don't see it happening again

The day of the student athlete is over, at least when it comes to the major sports. And I agree, at some point I hope guardrails are implemented - maybe a salary cap and at least a two year commitment from portal transfers, but lets hold off on all that until after we've won our championship ;).
