SJU Portal Targets

If this whole insider/rumor mill thing did not exist, and we woke up on June 1 with a transfer portal class of Deivon Smith, Kadary Richmond, Jamir Watkins (or someone like that), Aaron Scott, and Vince Iwuchukwu along with retaining everybody the staff wanted to keep, we'd all be on cloud nine/elated. Hopefully it happens.

On paper, we would be more talented, more athletic, and a better fit for Pitino than last year by a long shot. Hopefully with a changed focus of making pieces fit/jell on Day 1, we'll see a better start out of the gate.
Excellent post!!

I personally think we will be a top 15 team by the conclusion of next season with Smith, Kadary, a good PF, and everyone else returning. A good roster with excellent coaching. This will potentially be a great portal class for us.

Wouldn't be surprised if we lose our all games in the Bahamas and make the second weekend of the tournament. Smith and Kadary will be something to watch. I think Zuby and Luis make huge leaps next season as Juniors.

Deivon's a home run. We should be elated we get him tomorrow.
I think he’s very important. He will be the straw that stirs the drink.

A couple of things to note on him…Utah went 10-11 with him when their starting PG went down. They were 12-5 with the other kid…that includes 5-2 when they both played and 7-3 when Deivon Smith didn’t play to start the year (didn’t play against us).

Smith’s stats before that kid got hurt were pedestrian. Less than 8 ppg and 2.7 assists, but he was just catching up after missing them first part of the season. He exploded for 11 and 11 the game that kid got hurt and played 22 minute. Sometimes guys just need a chance.

I think this is a much better fit for him. He’ll be encouraged to take chances and play fast a lot more.

We are not losing our games in the Bahamas. What kind of thinking is this?

Ill be tanning my ripped physique by day and watching the Johnnies kicking ass at night.

The bahamas is going to be a blast and we are going to win!!!!!

Trilly on Kadary: “I don’t know about Kadary specifically tomorrow but I was told early next week if he does in fact commit to St. John’s.”
Smith and Kadary as our starting backcourt? That's pretty solid.

how would wilcher feel being recruited over?
Rick said he'll start this season, so maybe him, RJ and Zuby would be the other 3 starters?

i find it hard to believe that Jenkin’s replacement will be an upgrade, especially in the scoring department. Plus even if we are better on paper, I think the league will be over all stronger then last year with no gimmies like DePaul and Georgetown.

It doesn’t matter if our next PG scores 5 pts a game. It’s about chemistry and fit. If he can defend the position we will be fine.
I will certainly matter if the scoring isn’t coming from another position as last season. Hopefully the scoring is more spread out but Pitino always seemed to like his PGs to be scorers.

A huge subplot heading into the year will be how real was Deivon's shooting last year. But I don't really think it's fair to just say he struggles without pointing out that he shot 40% last year.
Well than he does struggle on 60% of his 3 point shots 🤪

Smith shot 40% last season, Kadary shot 44% two seasons ago and is 34% for his career, and Luis shot 35% as UMass. Good shooters…probably not, but they aren’t THAT bad.

We aren’t talking about Malik Boothe here.
And Kadary and Luis' FT% point to some potential to improve.

At end of the day, we'll need jumps from Dunlap & Wilcher (Zuby's icing on the cake) to all feel 100% comfortable with spacing. But in college basketball, most good teams are expecting sophs jumps to reach their potential. It's not that weird/bad of a situation.

Jamal Shead averaged 9.7 points man. Who cares? Peyton Siva won a national championship with a career high 10.0. On the list of things I want a PG to do for a winning team, scoring isn’t that high.

For his career he struggles and I like Luis but we all saw his jumper. Again on paper seems like should be solid but would prefer a proven consistent 3 point shooter on the roster.

68% of the time for his career and 40% of the time from the line.
