He always had his fair share of five star guys

Just breezing through wikipedia:
2004: Sebastian Telfair, although he did not attend
2005: Amir Johnson
2006: Earl Clark
2008: Semardo Samuels
2009: Peyton Siva
2011: Wayne Blackshear, Chane Behanan
2016: VJ King
2017: Brian Bowen

2013: two five-star guys, Terry Rozier and Chris Jones
2014: one five star guy, Shaqquan Aaron
2015: one five star guy, Ray Spalding. another top 40 guy named Donovan Mitchell
Checked a few out on Wikipedia and no question some on the list made 5 stars on some rating services. Some also had no mention of ratings, some were notated as 4 stars. Amir Johnson also never went to college.

Honestly, this exercise told me that Pitino's recruiting approach should be even more trusted. Some of these guys panned out (Clark, Siva, Rozier, Mitchell) and others were total flops, better to focus on system & culture fit, and trust the staff's perspective above rankings.

Sounds like we’re rationalizing a bit. We have a core of three or four players who should contribute next year, but we have some gaping holes that we need to fill with talented kids. Diamonds in the rough generally don’t work in the portal era. The kid can be a proven entity and a good fit. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. Hopefully we’ll land a few. I’m still relatively confident.

Not disagreeing (especially on holes in roster), but how many proven entities are there and who is a proven entity? I assume no mid major and low major guys are proven entities, since they have to prove they can compete at a higher level. Even many of the high major guys that are transferring have some warts and may not fit everywhere. That’s why I thought roach would be a huge get and worth paying for, but not a lot out there that is proven at the big east level. Even in the portal these coaches still have to project how guys will fit in their system and at their level/conference. I could be rationalizing, but I think pitino was basically making this point even during the season way before this portal season started.

Fair point. But the USC kid and the kid from Mississippi are not proven entities. I think they’re reaches. The North Texas kid seems like he would be a good fit, but I think we need at least two more recruits that will get this board excited.

To me a proven entity is someone whose performed well at a major conference or at least at an upper echelon mid-major. I have no problem taking a couple of flyers but I think we need two or three top flight transfers to be feeling good next year.

Yeah, exactly. Not trying to nitpick logen's words, but I don't think its fair to say he wasn't a five star recruiting coach. There was always a couple on each roster, and a lot of them actually panned out + played big roles.

Well there's rarely more than 25-30 5* recruits in any given class so if you're living in 25-40 range then you're more likely to be getting 4*'s than 5 *'s. No one is saying CRP won witih 3 star recruits. Reviewing all the names mentioned above on Seb and Earl Clark strike me as guys who were expected to be great players from the get go. So Logen and Marillac are both kind of saying the same thing.

Don't get me wrong. I think we need to land 1-2 big recruits.

All this anxiety has me thinking of last year, when he announced the majority f the team wouldn’t be back. He said he wasn’t disparaging any of them (even though he kinda was) but he wanted the right guys “for him”. I don’t think that was just a cover for an unruly team or a cover for getting rid of players. He seemed to mean it. And at the time, I loved it!!

This is the first year he is really playing the portal game. He may decide that his approach this year needs modifying next. But this year, he wants to do what he always has — taken his time, evaluating each and every player carefully and making sure that they really want to play here and for him. After all, he knows it’s a lot when he benches kids or publicly upbraids them.

I think the tryout thing, which Paultzman says in not the norm if I read correctly, is part of the process. (Not sure if he was saying tryouts not the norm or Khadary doesn’t need a tryout.) Mostly, it seems RP’s attitude is either you are willing to tryout or you are really not that interested
