Here's the reality with RJ Luis, he has very high end representation, that may want him to go test the waters and go through the process for exposure purposes. I think it would be a waste of time. We know he's a gifted athlete, but the shin splints paired with his need to learn the fundamentals - he's a long long way away from the NBA.

As far as I know and the people I spoke to as of yesterday, RJ Luis will be on the the team next season. As we all know things are fluid these days and things can change but right now I anticipate a core of at least Wilcher, Ejiofor, Dunlap, Luis.

Thanks for sharing. I honestly think testing the waters isn't a waste of time in this draft. He'll get evaluated and exposure. This draft is so weak that Reed Shepherd is a top 5 pick, Devin Carter is a top 10 pick, and Tyler Kolek is a consensus top 40 pick. If there's any crazy year to sneak in, it's this one.

This is good context to know the team's expectations when going after other wings

if he could potentially get a promise of a 2-way... even going undrafted... given his injury history- could see him taking it to get a head start in a team's system. Julian wasn't drafted but got a head start on working towards a multi-year deal. Is RJ even close to Julian on certain skills (shooting) - no - but teams value Potential.

Could he potentially stand to make More in college over the next two years than he would G-League... ? probably.

Beware of guys testing the waters to find out what they need for the NBA, see JaKarr Sampson and Shamorie Ponds, both of whom went that route and came back working on developing for the league to the detriment of the team. My opinion, others may disagree.

For some context, I just finished "Life in the G" by Alex Squadron. Good read. I would say almost anyone at a high-level college program makes more in "NIL" than a straight G-League salary. Maybe not if on a 2-way. Not going to guess on RJ in particular but the theme of the book is how badly these guys want to be in the NBA and how they believe this is the best way to get there. For anyone not on a 2-way they make less than is available overseas.

He has 45 days from March 18 to enter the portal. Given that the combine is mid-May, will he enter the portal to keep his options open?

I remember Ponds especially seemed to have an impact on his game, with passing way too much.

Honestly, I cannot imagine the feedback from the NBA to Luis not being "we need to see a consistent motor/not fouling on defense, off-the-ball awareness on defense, not compounding mistakes, improve court vision, and better three point shot". Aside from maybe taking too many three's/focusing on that, I think for him all of his feedback would benefit the team. His #1 issue is his impact on other players.

But I take your point.

Unlike Julian, Luis would probably make more money in college.

Only other reason someone like Luis would stay in the draft is they are sick of school. But I've heard nothing like that being the case.

you know the Key* dates for guys entering portal / staying in draft / when they have to say they are coming back to college? I vaguely remember that Grad Transfers could enter / leave / commit at any time.... or i might be making that up....

And Luis is the single most important player we have in terms of planning. He provides enough offense where you don’t have to specifically look for scorers if you have him and a handful of guys that can score 10-12 and defend at a high enough level to generate easy points in transition and secondary transition.

Thanks.

So if a player doesn't* withdraw their name for the NBA by the 31-May... they are unable to return to College?

Is there any deadline to commit for a College? (grad-transfer/underclasmen)

Thanks.

That's my understanding about the NBA deadline.

I don't think there's a NCAA deadline to commit to a college, although I can be wrong about that, but I do think schools may have "deadlines" about it in terms of being in by summer sessions.

I don't know what the deal is with grad transfers and whether they can portal at any time.

Something tells me that "school" ain't what it once was. Which is why you hear about very few kids leaving college ball for the pros(includes Europe, etc) because they're sick if being so called "students". It's also why you hardly ever hear of a kid being "academically illegible" any more. If you can hoop, and make the school big bucks, then they ain't getting rid of you so quickly for academic reasons.

One wonders if kids spend more time with agents brokering competing deals than they do preparing for their upcoming games. 😇
Upcoming games ? How about these Student Athletes preparing for upcoming Classes ?

I think we all know, with rare exception , the days of Student Athlete are long gone.

To see the harsh reality , they should publish a list on the same day they post the portal candidates as to who has withdrawn from classes. Or School entirely .

Thanks.

Yes, if they do not withdraw by the deadline they cannot return to college.

There is only a deadline to enter the portal. There is no deadline to commit. Grad transfers can enter at any time.

So, it would make sense for these players to enter the portal, then if they don't stay in the draft, they would have the option to return to their original colleges or transfer.
