SJU Portal Targets

I don’t think that not getting to the dance correlates with not keeping players from our previous roster. Just curious to hear which players you think would have benefited this team to get us there.

My thoughts about the team RP put together is that it took to long to gel. I’m sure you’ll agree that they were finally playing their best basketball the last month of the season and had they made the dance, would have done some damage. Early season injuries I believe only contributed to the late gelling of this team.
I think that retaining a few players from the previous roster would have both given us quality depth(to cover for injuries) and gotten the team to gel sooner. I think that keeping Stanley and getting Yaxel to honor his commitment would have helped us up front, Especially the 2nd half of the season when Joel struggled. I would have liked to see us retain Storr and Jones as well.

Edit: Yaxel and Jones were 1st team all conference, Storr and Stanley were 2nd team. Yaxel was also AAC defensive player of the year and averaged 10 boards per game. So I think maybe we could have used all of them.

I am fine with a solid but unspectacular PG, depending on what the other pieces of the portal add turn out to be.

I would strongly prefer that Kriisa not be any piece of the puzzle.
Legitimate question, why? I know nothing about the guy.

117 pages on a thread titled 'SJU Portal Targets' and we still don't have a single commit is peak Redmen.com.
Wait till someone does commit. Another 100 pages, half saying this is the guy to take us to the Final Four and the other half saying RP should have waited for someone better. Over/under on neutral comments is 2. (Not saying this a bad thing, just the personality of the board.)

good- so he's got that out of the way...

Seems like we are gonna need a specific thread on this kid. Mods!

If he is the lesser of 2 guards we bring on... nice. If this is THE guard we bring... need a big sophmore jump from Sim

....Love making definitive April predictions...
And that’s the point. Right now, we have no reliable starting point guard, I was hoping Dug McDaniel may have been it) as Wilcher has not shown the ability to be that (at this point in time). Can we afford to have him be THE guard we bring in, considering the talent level and size of the guards on the top teams in the conference ( which we hope the Johnnie’s can be)?

And to be honest, after all the talk of the great haul of talent coming our way and no kids signed after the portal has been opened a month, is this where we want to start? I guess all the talent that’s going to make us a Big East contender is still on its way cause there better be a lot of it.

We had 14 players we were virtually injury free let’s not use injuries as any kind of excuse (almost every team has injuries).

He was very good at Arizona. Hard to evaluate what he did at WVU since that team was a mess. Two long suspensions for impermissible benefits - though I guess there is no such thing anymore. Overall I view him as a better version of Jenkins, so if you are Team Marillac you may not like him but if you are Team Carmine you may love him. However unlike Jenkins I think if they surrounded him with other offensive players he will distribute the ball more willingly.

So I guess I'm talking myself into "OK fine."

It's just that my general view of PGs is that (except for really elite scorers) I want someone whose primary focus is distribution and defense and takes enough drives and shots to keep the D honest. But I am probably a dinosaur in that regard.

Wait. You were criticizing Kriisa for WVU's performance but you wanted the PG of Michigan?!

You have named just about everyone . Except Posh and Wusu .

Have you forgotten that last season under CMA one of turmoil and was near total rebellion ? Shanley and Cragg both witnessed first
Hand that behavior , which they found unacceptable .

While RP offered Posh , Storr the chance to return , they declined .

Would you have preferred a team that collectively was viewed as dysfunctional and handed that over to RP?

This year , with the Portal getting larger and with Coaching changes we are seeing more players following the Coaches that recruited them , rather than stay at Schools getting new Coschrs .
Of course ,players now with NIL more solidly in place the $$$$ has stimulated much of that transfer activity as well .

Yup, forget what the rest of the team did, he was by far the bright spot in that team. And as Pitino quoted,”one of the best guards we are likely to see all year” among other Pitino superlatives.

The transfer portal has become a s-storm.

According to On3 there are 858 players entered the basketball transfer portal.

Only 7.23% have committed.

Reportedly the assistant coaches are in breakneck speed to obtain tapes of players, review the tapes, and contact the players while players are inundated with phone calls from dozens of college coaches which are emboldening the players to make sometimes unrealistic demands.

I blame the feckless NCAA for the situation in college sports for not providing better leadership over the decades in providing shared revenue.

Seems somewhat questionable especially given our lack of speed last year and ricks comments regarding it. Wouldn’t be my choice but he is as good as anyone in the country on spot up 3s. Hope he wouldn’t be a 30 minute guy with ball in his hands.

I can think of one player in particular who Krissa would fit very well with..
If Kriisa gets you Ballo then that would be a worthwhile investment, yes
