One thing you know for sure is once we lose a few consecutive games trolls avon barksdale and ricky smith will reappear. Notice how the former has disappeared in last month when the program appears to be on upswing. Lol
Thought Barksdale and family are big Mullin fans. Surprised we haven't heard from him.
My apologies to AB if so.
Actually most of the posters who disappeared are the ones who only seemed to first appear when Lavin was on the verge of being let go. Ya know the ones who stated that "a well deserved long term extension had already been finalized" and other such nonsensical statements. They hung around for a while after Lavin was let go so they could chastise the administration for the "huge mistake they had made". As soon as Chris was hired they went the way of the third ave el, never to be heard from again. Only confirming what I had felt all along, that they were not actually fans of the program but either pot stirrers, friends of the prior staff , or both. We saw the same clowns come out towards the tail end of Norms tenure.
Actually I've been here long before Lavin,et al , even Looie. I was in favor of keeping Lavin and thought he would add a few good recruits to go along with Sampson, and continue winning 20 games a year. However I have no issue with the Mullin hiring and think it has the making of something really great. Can't speak of other supporters.
I think tha based on the survey here that overwhelingly favored a Lavin hire, nearly all had reservations but knew where the program was before Lavin came here. Not that you have to, but LAvin never really connected with fans, with New York City, with Queens. While he chose to live in the city, he was hardly a fixture on campus, and unlike guys like Keith Hernandez of even Rusty Staub, he didn't work to make himself a New Yorker as both those guys are. He seemed to punch a clock and not driven outwardly for the heights of success. Maybe that's harsh because California guys are different than NYers in terms of expressing the competitiveness to win. And maybe that's the point. He may have done reasonably well here, but never seemed to fit. Mullin on the other hand fits like a glove, and he appears hellbent on building a top program - of course whether he does remains to be seen but it wont be from lack of effort.
Great story, Monte. Wright is a great speaker, charismatic and charming personality. Had he not made it in basketball, he'd likely been a high level corporate executive. He has the ability to chat with casual acquaintances and find common ground, and become animated and interested in casual conversation. You walk away feeling he is your friend, and maybe you are. He speak, preaches, and exudes what it is to be a Villanovan, far above that of being a mere student or fan.
Mullin, while not nearly possessing the charism that Wright possesses, can be that type of ambassador for St. John's. The entire reason he came back here is because he found himself on a crash course with destiny, being drawn into a legacy that is much bigger than Chris Mullin. It becmae clear that there really isn't another torch bearer of his magnitude, and certainly he was drawn by a strong sense of obligation to Coach C. and St. John's. While others are capable of winning here, more than anyone he embodied th school - the city - whie he was here. So, like cheesy movies, this is his destiny. The moment has arrived, and another important chapter in that 100 year book of SJU basketball will be written. For most of us, stronger than hope, is a conviction that this chapter will be as bright and successful as those storied pages before it.
Well said Beast. FWIW Chris has a genuine NYC/Brooklyn charisma, that goes a very very long ways.
