SJU hoops will soon be unrecognizable

Seems Ulysses Grant knew what he was doing by choosing the right generals such as Sheridan and Sherman; so Grant knew how to organize, operate, select the right folks for the right job. And oh yes he won the war. The most horrific.
Gene Michael similarly had that proverbial eye for talent choosing and/or protecting Bernie Williams among others. Oh yes the Yanks have a few flags flying like the Union Army.
My West Point brother in arms Mike K was sub-500 at Duke for a while and his tenure seemed, well, tenuous.

There is no debate here imho - imvho - Chris Mullin and team will reach the SJU high water marks of a #1 ranking, recruiting HS all Americans, reaching the final four.

Just check out the DNA. All ye know and all ye need to know. Whitman wrote Leaves of Grass. Robert Fulton a painter by trade had an idea about a steamboat. Countless other examples come to mind. Posters brighter than I, yes there are some perhaps countless, can share other examples.

Chris Mullin was born with talent and with a work ethic. Strong ethic. Very strong.
His DNA is to use his God given gifts wisely He will. It's his destiny.

We should time capsule these quotes and break them out when Coach Mullin lurches past 100, 200, and so forth "Ws". Louie and Joe Lapchik will smile down. Mike K will grasp him at mid court after another SJU win over the blue Devils.

New York's team. No debate. It's too cold in Syracuse. When people hear "Calhoun" they think of the wrestler Haystacks or the politician of the 1800s. UConn has slipped back into Yankee Conference days.

Life is subjective. Debatable. This is as close one gets to avoiding the debate.

All the best

If one were to tell me Ken Burns was on redmen.com my money he would be SS&G :)

Better than George Burns (with cigar in hand and annoying wife Gracie in tow) correct?
:)
Sweet dreams

One thing you know for sure is once we lose a few consecutive games trolls avon barksdale and ricky smith will reappear. Notice how the former has disappeared in last month when the program appears to be on upswing. Lol

Actually, to be fair, Avon is very much in favor of the Mullin hiring, almost as much as he was for the Lavin firing.

Coach K was under .500 twice in his career at duke, and that was his 2nd and 3rd season. Is that really what you consider 'a while'?

Actually most of the posters who disappeared are the ones who only seemed to first appear when Lavin was on the verge of being let go. Ya know the ones who stated that "a well deserved long term extension had already been finalized" and other such nonsensical statements. They hung around for a while after Lavin was let go so they could chastise the administration for the "huge mistake they had made". As soon as Chris was hired they went the way of the third ave el, never to be heard from again. Only confirming what I had felt all along, that they were not actually fans of the program but either pot stirrers, friends of the prior staff , or both. We saw the same clowns come out towards the tail end of Norms tenure.

Not quite as much as Lavin firing position. He would probably have taken any coach. Mullin is a win for all fans.

Actually I've been here long before Lavin,et al , even Looie. I was in favor of keeping Lavin and thought he would add a few good recruits to go along with Sampson, and continue winning 20 games a year. However I have no issue with the Mullin hiring and think it has the making of something really great. Can't speak of other supporters.

I think tha based on the survey here that overwhelingly favored a Lavin hire, nearly all had reservations but knew where the program was before Lavin came here. Not that you have to, but LAvin never really connected with fans, with New York City, with Queens. While he chose to live in the city, he was hardly a fixture on campus, and unlike guys like Keith Hernandez of even Rusty Staub, he didn't work to make himself a New Yorker as both those guys are. He seemed to punch a clock and not driven outwardly for the heights of success. Maybe that's harsh because California guys are different than NYers in terms of expressing the competitiveness to win. And maybe that's the point. He may have done reasonably well here, but never seemed to fit. Mullin on the other hand fits like a glove, and he appears hellbent on building a top program - of course whether he does remains to be seen but it wont be from lack of effort.

I voted to retain Lavin in the survey because I felt the choice was a Hurley, Masiello or Lavin. I also felt OB and Jordan would leave with a new coach and Sampson would back out of his commitment.
That would have left a bleak couple of years. The voting results would have been entirely different if we knew what the administration did, that Mullin was willing to take the job.

Salty wasn't talking about you and other long time posters who felt that lavin should have been retained and expressed their opinions, which I may not have agreed with but I most certainly respected. I was talking specifically about posters who only appeared towards the tail end of Lavin's tenure and who were making outlandish pro-lavin(IE best coach we ever had, etc) and anti-administration/anti-SJU(IE no one wants to come here, etc) opinions and proclamations. Many of whom also touted their "inside info" about Lavin being retained.

Beast I know how highly you regard Jay wright and how he's embraced Villanova. Here's a quick story: A few weeks back I was at a college fair in the city with my daughter. The Villanova rep was a "Father Frank". A rather stoic and reserved gentlemen. My daughter started the conversation by introducing herself and asking all the usual questions that a high school kid would ask a college rep who also happened to be a stoic priest. He answered all the questions in a very matter-of-fact manner. My daughter then asked about "school spirit", which afforded me the opportunity to ask about the basketball program's impact on school spirit. Well Father Frank's entire demeanor changed with my question! He started talking about Jay Wright and told us some great anecdotal stories about how Jay wanted the job when Rollie moved on, but didn't get it, and how his actual hiring came about after Lappas was let go. And then he said words to the effect of "while Jay did not attend Villanova, he gets everything about Villanova. He is on campus every day chatting with the students and faculty. He is part of the fabric of our school.......". He said these words with such pride and admiration. My hope is that much like jay Wright(and Louie), Chris will become a fixture on campus and become part of the fabric of current day St. John's, since he's already part of the fabric of our storied history.

It's well known that SJU compared to other competition, as a school/campus in and of itself, without considering basketball, is a tough sell. Come spend 4 years in Jamaica, is a tough sell.

Do not think it is a tough sell when you put the other factors in the equation like HOF coach and staff that can get you to the next level,MSG and NY exposure and perhaps you have family and friends here . Its seems like a no brainer.

I did spend 4 years in Jamaica, and I've spent 56 years in NYC. With all the issues, still the greatest city in the world in most people's opinion. But let's put opinion aside, if NYC and SJU are such a tough sell, explain to me how it is that every single coach we have ever had here, has had no trouble getting kids to come here? Even Norm got decent talent to come here. The only reason he couldn't land the blue chippers was because of legitimate concerns about his coaching acumen.

Great story, Monte. Wright is a great speaker, charismatic and charming personality. Had he not made it in basketball, he'd likely been a high level corporate executive. He has the ability to chat with casual acquaintances and find common ground, and become animated and interested in casual conversation. You walk away feeling he is your friend, and maybe you are. He speak, preaches, and exudes what it is to be a Villanovan, far above that of being a mere student or fan.

Mullin, while not nearly possessing the charism that Wright possesses, can be that type of ambassador for St. John's. The entire reason he came back here is because he found himself on a crash course with destiny, being drawn into a legacy that is much bigger than Chris Mullin. It becmae clear that there really isn't another torch bearer of his magnitude, and certainly he was drawn by a strong sense of obligation to Coach C. and St. John's. While others are capable of winning here, more than anyone he embodied th school - the city - whie he was here. So, like cheesy movies, this is his destiny. The moment has arrived, and another important chapter in that 100 year book of SJU basketball will be written. For most of us, stronger than hope, is a conviction that this chapter will be as bright and successful as those storied pages before it.
