SJU hoops will soon be unrecognizable

I have watched SJU basketball since the sixties. While we have had a few really special players and great (by our standards) seasons, the formula has been the same. A steady diet of athletic wings and undersized 4s and 5s, and a nearly complete absence of one of the most important assets in college basketball post the 3 point rule: great shooters with range. Looie had the Cluess brothers, Glenn Williams, Ron Rowan, of course Chris Mullin, and a few others. All before the 3 point rule. Post Looie, the sharp shooters were slim pickings. Scorers like D Lo and Marcus, yes, but not real consistent 3 point threats.

Those days are gone. Coach Mullin wants shooters, and size, and guys that know fundamentals. And if they don't know enough coming in, they will going out. Three balls will be raining down on the heads of our opponents, instead of vice versa. Teamwork will be Coach Mullin's guiding principle. I'm giddy from the thought of it.

How many days 'til the season starts?
Can't wait!

I don't know if I'm the only one, but since I've been rooting for St. John's during the Jarvis era, through the Norm and Lavin eras, it always seemed like the teams were pieced together with no plan in place. Players were added to the team regardless of need and most of the time didn't work together well. I've seen a complete change of that since Mullin has been here. Each player who has been added so far fits a plan in place, and it's very refreshing to see

My god, please pass me some kool aid. Let's win a few games first. Maybe finalizing a roster too. I like coach and want him to win, but many on here are unrealistic and also perhaps setting him up for disaster.

I see no need to temper our enthusiasm or our hopes for a great season. Things look better and better each day.

I offered no predictions about wins or losses, or tourney appearances, long or short term. Coach Mullin said that he would mold the team based on his exposure to the NBA game. That he would look for shooters and size. He is recruiting players that fit the bill. He has 2 top notch recruiters on his staff. He will have a lot of pressure on him, the least of which be from this board.

Length and shooting has clearly been a recruiting focus and I'd expect that to continue. It will definitely be welcome change.

When scrolling down, as soon as I saw the screen name I knew it was going to be a post just like that one.

Please explain how anything anyone posts on here could possibly set Chris up for a "disaster"?

Disaster in the fans eyes. Many on here think we are by default a top team and a power house that will win many many games. Yet we've yet to play a single game and haven't even finalized a roster. Guarantee if we lose some games many of those living in oblivion on here will be bitching. All I'm saying is let's win games, and give the almighty praises when we stack the W's.

I have yet to see any poster who fits what you are describing. It's actually more like what you and a few other posters would like the rest of the board to be like so you can revel in misery.

Fans are excited about having the school's favorite son come home and assemble a great staff so far. And the pieces we've brought in actually look like they've been brought in with a plan behind it, not a disjointed mishmash. Best of all, when you ask Coach Mullin a question, he actually gives an answer based in reality, not new age guru platitudes that make no sense half the time.

I'm not waiting for wins to be posted. When it comes to ST.John's basketball I have always been optimistic, maybe a little less with Roberts and Jarvis as coaches. Now, especially with Mullin, there will only be success. And you can take that to the bank.

You don't think Chris deserves praise for what he and the staff have done in a short period of time? You don't think the enthusiasm is warranted? Of course it occasionally goes overboard, but considering where we've been and where we're headed, the unbridled enthusiasm is completely understandable.

One thing you know for sure is once we lose a few consecutive games trolls avon barksdale and ricky smith will reappear. Notice how the former has disappeared in last month when the program appears to be on upswing. Lol

I just arrived home and noted the flavor herein and decided to add my " two cents" in.

LJSA monte JACK of V knight others who lean toward optimism...appreciate it

Seems Ulysses Grant knew what he was doing by choosing the right generals such as Sheridan and Sherman; so Grant knew how to organize, operate, select the right folks for the right job. And oh yes he won the war. The most horrific.
Gene Michael similarly had that proverbial eye for talent choosing and/or protecting Bernie Williams among others. Oh yes the Yanks have a few flags flying like the Union Army.
My West Point brother in arms Mike K was sub-500 at Duke for a while and his tenure seemed, well, tenuous.

There is no debate here imho - imvho - Chris Mullin and team will reach the SJU high water marks of a #1 ranking, recruiting HS all Americans, reaching the final four.

Just check out the DNA. All ye know and all ye need to know. Whitman wrote Leaves of Grass. Robert Fulton a painter by trade had an idea about a steamboat. Countless other examples come to mind. Posters brighter than I, yes there are some perhaps countless, can share other examples.

Chris Mullin was born with talent and with a work ethic. Strong ethic. Very strong.
His DNA is to use his God given gifts wisely He will. It's his destiny.

We should time capsule these quotes and break them out when Coach Mullin lurches past 100, 200, and so forth "Ws". Louie and Joe Lapchik will smile down. Mike K will grasp him at mid court after another SJU win over the blue Devils.

New York's team. No debate. It's too cold in Syracuse. When people hear "Calhoun" they think of the wrestler Haystacks or the politician of the 1800s. UConn has slipped back into Yankee Conference days.

Life is subjective. Debatable. This is as close one gets to avoiding the debate.

All the best
:)

Thought Barksdale and family are big Mullin fans. Surprised we haven't heard from him.

True, they are and have been big CM supporters.
