SJU Future Training Facility

50mm…? We building an outdoor court with a couple hoops?

That number seems relatively small for a large construction project in NYC…

Please Opine those with knowledge…
I know Maryland is spending $50 million on the one that is under construction so along with Seton Hall seems to be the going rate. When you get into high level Football the prices get very high.

The ROI on a new on-campus arena with 8-10,000 seats would be just horrible. At a total cost in the $150-200 mm range, we would at most play 10 games or so per season unless we reduced MSG games.

Keep in mind Villanova spent close to $100 mm to renovate the Pavillion. They only chose to renovate because the surrounding towns gave too much pushback over traffic concerns with a new larger arena.

I’m sick of having my knees rammed up under my chin while trying to watch a game!
I believe that there are plans to put seatbacks on the lower bleachers opposite the benches. Without a massive reno to the upper concrete bleachers, not possible. This was going to happen for this season but they ran out of time. We will lose some seating and those ticket prices will certainly increase.

I'm guessing that as/if attendance surges, more games will be moved to garden, alleviating the necessity somewhat.

I sat in bleachers for decades and never minded them that much except when they got too crammed with fans not sitting where their own seats were.

Bottom line is if we are winning I'd rather win and be uncomfortable than have a comfy seat for a .500 7th place team.

Training facility takes priority to attract top players and at a much lower cost than an arena. Athletes couldn’t care less about the seating on campus. What I think will happen next season is full season ticket demand will outstrip supply (for CA games)

YES.... this is priority... I will gladly stand against the railing in Sec 11 if I am watching Top talent dominate

Any updates on groundbreaking? April 2025 was the stated target date, but the lack of news probably means they are having problems securing the necessary financing to green light the project.

Saw the new seats going in at Carnesecca, but this project would seem to be more important for the future success of the program, given Coach Pitino's goal to play our most meaningful games at MSG.

And in the big picture, any upgrades at Carnesecca is the equivalent of throwing lipstick on a pig. :ROFLMAO:

I'd be interested to read the write-ups before Taffner Field House was built (2005, reno 2015), but if I recall wasn't it being billed as a " 43,000 sf state-of-the-art, practice facility with first class amenities", replacing older, inadequate facilities.

I hope this is not Taffner 2.0

Rick knows exactly what he wants in a basketball practice facility and I'm comfortable with that.

That was a long time ago, and a lot of decision makers ago as well. The standard for these practice facilities is incredibly high now. I have no doubt this will be eye popping, unlike Taffner

It better not be. Taffner = Poor design, poor workmanship, cheap material and equipment, and outdated as soon as it was opened.

Taffner was supposed to be eye popping too. The eye popping turned out to be eye rolling as it became “You spent all that money on that monstrosity????”

My son went to Providence College while major upgrades and renovations were going on. Father Shanley led
that effort. Work and speed was unbelievable. Campus transitioned overnight and all done top notch. I think
that was a major reason he was hired because of his resume with capital improvements

Tafner was also a deisgned as a multi use facility for students and varsity athletes. Our planned athletic facility is even narrower than varsity athletes. It is being billed as a basketball practice facility. We still need athletic facilities for our other 340 athletes and a true student wellness center.

Shanley gave an update a couple of months ago. He was hoping to start construction this Spring and apparently there are also plans to "gut" Taffner.

Taffner was originally supposed to be a basketball only facility and that was how it was originally presented. The flaws I laid out had nothing to do with the fact that it is a multi use facility. It has everything to do with poor planning, lack of professional oversight and doing things in a cheap moment and pop way.

No doubt they need updated and adequate facilities for the other sports which is one reason CA still stands and will for the foreseeable future. It is used for lockerrooms for most of the other sports along with offices and for practice. You have to first relocate those sports before you can do anything substantial to the existing building or tear it down and replace it.

I thought two courts were reserved for student use from the onset.

The problem with Taffner is that to renovate it to bring up to par would cost close to 50 million plus students use would be end and thus the priority would be to build a student wellness center, likely a cost of $75 million. A new basketball practice facility thus became the most economical alternative.

What kills me most about this is the Spring 2027 completion date. I know building things in NYC can be ridiculous, let alone on a congested college campus, but still....
