Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

i will watch. Not expecting much. Seton Hall has better players and coaching than we do. This will be competitive but in the end, we will lose by 5.

Brady and Wilcher should get major minutes today and for the rest of the season. But they wont. Same old same old. Rinse repeat.

I don’t know—I think of every game as a must win. I think I was expecting Pitino to use a magic wand a start each game off with a 20 point lead (10 against UConn). Patience is a virtue, but it’s hard being virtuous with this team, even during Lent. I am convinced that we are on the right course with this (our) basketball program.
I gave up going to St Johns losses for lent so that means victory today

And I actually changed my dates for flying to Peru so we fly out the day after Creighton and I'm flying home the day before the Gtown game so I can make that one. So that's 3 wins.

I believe you will be eating crow later today.

Soriano doesn’t have the scorers touch of Lanier and he worked extremely hard to get rid of every ounce of fat since he arrived at SJU. Lanier kept that fat and used it to get position in the paint and was very successful with it.
Maybe Soriano is in too good shape to achieve his best results.

Certainly can make the same case for Jay Wright after his first few years at Villanova.
Big difference was that in Hurley’s first two years he was in AAC and couldn’t recruit, after that and an unlimited NIL budget or whatever u would call it prior to the NIL, UConn brought in (paid for) higher level recruits who came to the Big East

Year 1: 16. 17 No NCAA
Year 2: 19 12 No NCAA
Year 3: 15 8 Lost NCAA 1st Rd
Year 4: 23 10 Lost NCAA 1st Rd
Year 5: 31 8 Won NCAA Tourney

Putting this here, but it can go anywhere. Yes, this is Danny Hurley’s five years at UConn (the first two were in the AAC), as a reminder that things do not change quickly.

I am pretty sure there was consternation over Hurley with the UConn faithful after his first four and a half seasons. But then poof, they go on an historic run and demolish every opponent in the tournament.

No one (especially the coaches) like the record. But for me, having that feeling of dread and wanting to bail out is not going to help.

I will lay off the heavy sedatives, to remain lucid in the hope this team makes a little run of its own. If not, then like the rest of us, I will be back here with the same eagerness that next year will be finally our year.
Great post.

Seton Hall guard Dre Davis (ankle) is a game-time decision. Davis has started all 25 games for the Pirates this season, averaging 13.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

This may be our best defensive strategy this year.

Disagree. Sure he couldn’t recruit BE level players in the AAC, but he didn’t recruit AAC level players while there in order to get a bid UConn a bid.

Of course that leads me to my broken record opinion of “how the Big East saved UConn.” But i do not want to start that again.

I agree with you and am not defending UConn at all. Just stating how (as you stated) the Big East saved Yukon.

Not taking CRP to task about the hire. It was a good hire (contrary to my pre-hire opinion, which Rick changed).

If Shanley is to be praised for a brilliant (expensive) move, since by almost any measure this team has performed well below expectations, some of that gilding has to take a hit too.

I am a strong supporter of the athletic dept financially and a strong NIL supporter. I plan my out of state travel between our home games, traveled to Charleston and attend many athletic dept events.

With all the hype and a 4-1 atart in conference play, no one would have guessed our season is on the brink of elimination with 6 games to go.

I'm not predicting a loss, or anticipating one. But I will say that I've reasonably cashed my chips emotionally after assessing the long odds of a 5-1 finish, not less the greater improbability of a 6-0 closeout of the regular season.

To that extent, after 5 decades can only remember heading to the exits once before the final buzzer and that was in Dayton, where a 12 ppint deficit may as well been 40 points.

Am hopingnfor a win but injected myself with emotional novacaine is all.
BOE, you are without question one of the most loyal Sons of St John’s BB and the University too. So , it was surprising to see your comments .

I share your frustration and I’m considerably older than you and the last 2 Decades are the worst I have experienced in my over 65 years of being a Redmen fan .
I was lucky I saw during my Student Years , Joe Lapchick’s final game and the great Sunny Dove .

Plus the great MulBerry years where we were National Title contenders . The Elite 8 team of z Artest , Barkley , etc .

So todays game will determine if we are going to have a chance to dance or , not . Barring a Sweep in the BE tourney .

Despite your frustrations this year , we all know you will be at the game and rooting for a Win .

Very sad to say that with 6 conference games remaining I refuse to allow myself to be optimistic today.

I will go today. I will root in a lifeless UBS arena.

If we lose, the next meaningless bar will be a 10-10 finish in conference, which will not be likely unless we beat SHU at home.

Wait till next year is the lament of losers, the rallying cry for Mets fans.

If Shanley was a genius and savior for spending $20 million of university endowment to guarantee Rick after signing off and likely advocating on Anderson's extension, does he look less like a GOAT president, or the goat in the old fashioned sense of the word. Let's not forget the huge spend on NIL this year.

Not knocking Pitino, but we will spend the off-season lamenting whether the roster he inherited needed teaks and not an overhaul, and whether what came in the door wasn't as good as what went out.

Life as an SJU fan, where winning always seems harder for us than anyone else - even when the university spends on a HOF coach and generous alums and fans pay the players hefty sums.
If they lose , it’s win the BET Tournament

Good point, and will add in CRP usually has success in year two. So maybe our expectations were too high
