Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

Overall I would say season is a slight disappointment. Given how hot we started conference play expectations of possibly a high single digit seed seeped in. Most first seasons aren’t great and more about building a culture. I realize that has changed with the portal but point is try and enjoy the rest of the season. What’s the alternative to stress and be negative about a game? We are playing meaningful games and I look forward to enjoying them.

Beast , I’m not believing this is your post ? For as long as I have been on the various Sites, you have staunchly supported nearly everything about the Team and School .

Yes , you explained why you didn’t favor hiring Pitino after Mullin and why the School wouldn’t either .

But , now , you seem to be openly taking Fr Shanley and RP to task .
Sure Pitino reached into the St John’s till and Shanley gave it to him but , after the fiasco of last season with Anderson , what could the School do ?

Decades of bad BB needed to be fixed . With CMA we were headed to DePaul territory .

Sure , we expected Pitino to be a miracle worker this year and grabbed onto the Team overhaul with zeal and hope . Some thought the Roster changes too radical and wished several players had been retained . Forgetting the Attitude displayed by many of them , on and off the Court . Completely ignoring that Fr Shanley and Cragg had witnessed unacceptable conduct during a Practice, as well as other infractions in the locker room .

No , this team will not be RP’s best here during his tenure but , he does offer hope for coming seasons .

What have any of us have at this point than Hope ?

Not taking CRP to task about the hire. It was a good hire (contrary to my pre-hire opinion, which Rick changed).

If Shanley is to be praised for a brilliant (expensive) move, since by almost any measure this team has performed well below expectations, some of that gilding has to take a hit too.

I am a strong supporter of the athletic dept financially and a strong NIL supporter. I plan my out of state travel between our home games, traveled to Charleston and attend many athletic dept events.

With all the hype and a 4-1 atart in conference play, no one would have guessed our season is on the brink of elimination with 6 games to go.

I'm not predicting a loss, or anticipating one. But I will say that I've reasonably cashed my chips emotionally after assessing the long odds of a 5-1 finish, not less the greater improbability of a 6-0 closeout of the regular season.

To that extent, after 5 decades can only remember heading to the exits once before the final buzzer and that was in Dayton, where a 12 ppint deficit may as well been 40 points.

Am hopingnfor a win but injected myself with emotional novacaine is all.

Extremely raw and real post right here.

Emotions were sky high here when we got pitino. With him, came heightened expectations for this program.

It is totally fair and OK to say that this season playing out like another typical St. John’s season is very deflating and something you might need to emotionally distance yourself from to protect your own peace/mental state.

I’ve felt very similarly since the providence game. I’m still excited for the game today, and the rest of our games for that matter. Cause I love watching and rooting for St. John’s. But I have had to negotiate with myself about just how “all in” I wanna go emotionally on this team, given what I’ve seen from them. Being able to have those conversations with myself, in my opinion, has served me much better than lashing out or getting overly upset when the losses happen.

Year 1: 16. 17 No NCAA
Year 2: 19 12 No NCAA
Year 3: 15 8 Lost NCAA 1st Rd
Year 4: 23 10 Lost NCAA 1st Rd
Year 5: 31 8 Won NCAA Tourney

Putting this here, but it can go anywhere. Yes, this is Danny Hurley’s five years at UConn (the first two were in the AAC), as a reminder that things do not change quickly.

I am pretty sure there was consternation over Hurley with the UConn faithful after his first four and a half seasons. But then poof, they go on an historic run and demolish every opponent in the tournament.

No one (especially the coaches) like the record. But for me, having that feeling of dread and wanting to bail out is not going to help.

I will lay off the heavy sedatives, to remain lucid in the hope this team makes a little run of its own. If not, then like the rest of us, I will be back here with the same eagerness that next year will be finally our year.

Certainly can make the same case for Jay Wright after his first few years at Villanova.

Soriano does not have bad hands, Did he “miraculously” turn into an eight point a game sub-par rebounder who gets dominated by the likes of the Josh Oduros of the world? Soriano may not be as good as we hoped he would be but he is nowhere near as bad as he’s playing. He started off the Big East quite strong, but something is clearly off with him. I expect a bounce back game from him today.
What is wrong is located between the right ear and left ear.
Rebounding is all about positioning. That's what Pitino went over with him in game film.

IMO, this season is typical and deflating, if next season, Pitino has not laid the proper foundation to move forward. I know some posters have criticized Pitino for not changing his approach but I understand why he hasn’t (and I think by and large they do also), namely that he is installing his system, his way of playing, and while it sucks for fans, he is not going to change that and have to potentially “start over” again next year.

Tell your old man to try dragging Walton and Lanier up and down the court...every night...
Lanier was similar to Soriano in build and lack of athleticism but had incredibly soft hands with excellent rotation on his shots. He also had a killer instinct and used his body to his advantage down low. That's where the comparison ends.

Soriano I think has a fragile ego. He loses confidence. Coach and Daniss say he is over thinking. Call it what you will but at root, it’s psychological. He is also not intimidating. I have never seen him give a hard foul in the paint. No one fears going to the hoop on him. It’s just not his nature. I also suspect he is not good under pressure. Some love the pressure and high stakes. Some wilt. During the Anderson years he did not face the expectations, scrutiny, and demands placed upon him by a new staff, more media attention, and a roused fan base. We have all seen players like this in other sports as well. I am certain Soriano is as confused and disappointed as we are. I feel sorry for him and wish him well. I hope and pray he bounces back for his own sake. This path he is on will be a terrible way to end his career. Whatever hope he had of playing overseas is fast disappearing.

I don’t know—I think of every game as a must win. I think I was expecting Pitino to use a magic wand a start each game off with a 20 point lead (10 against UConn). Patience is a virtue, but it’s hard being virtuous with this team, even during Lent. I am convinced that we are on the right course with this (our) basketball program.
