As far as Smith goes, I know all the armchair physicians were beseeching for him to not go in or at least be taken out but if he was cleared to play, he was cleared to play. It is very possible he is just going to have to learn to play with the pain and restricted motion and the risk of further injury is very minimal and further rest is not going to significantly improve the condition of the shoulder; so tonight was the chance to start that process in preparation for the tougher games.
The point is none of us are privy to the injury details and the fact that he was “off” without knowing those particulars is not necessarily a valid reason to not play him.

Two concerns after a big win…

1. Smith’s health

2. Wilcher’s shot

Wilcher great on the drive, just can’t hit his shots.
Wilcher’s form on his shot is to good for him not to break out of this. Scott is shooting well again. So is RJ. Even Kadary is hitting his foul shots now. Wilcher will get through this. As far Smith is concerned, hopefully four more days will help him get closer to where we need him to be.

This whole Richmond back to the Rock hype was just a bunch of local guys like Carino trying to gin up interest in an SHU game in a bad season.

Two things were not going to derail SJU tonight:

1)They are a much better team and

2)They have a coach who has the team laser focused. Especially on the defensive end.

To SJU it was just another game....

If he's not able to contribute to close to levels needed, even rebounding, then it doesn't help.

Xavier would exploit that.

Hence “start the process” because the only way to know what he can and cannot do is let him play and see. So now he, the coaching and medical staffs. have some real “stuff” to work with, which is invaluable. Finally, a player like Smith brings a lot more to the table than what we see from the stands or our living rooms or from reading a box score. IMO, he obviously played “different” but was still a positive contributor.

I tend to agree. If they are playing him when he is obviously hindered makes me think it won’t get better any time soon. Might as well play him.

Exactly. No way they were going to risk his season unnecessarily. He was obviously cleared to play, and I bet this game was about getting his "sea legs" under him to get used to playing through an injury that is improving. And we get 3 more days of rest.
