Seton Hall, Sat. Feb. 11, 12 Noon, CBS SN/SiriusXM

NIT? My mind right now is on winning the BET and getting an automatic bid. The only team that worries me is Nova. We've already handled Butler, Creighton and Xavier have both lost their PG and all the other teams we'd be either favored or a pick em. Avoid the 5 seed so we don't meet Nova till the finals and anything can happen

I'll have what he's having. :)

I like the mentality. Why not? We are playing our best basketball right now. 5 games left and we've beaten 3 of them. The others like Creighton lost their star PG, and this time the Hoyas are at home. Anything can happen with 5 games left, if we are peaking entering the BET. we can still work our way to some sort of post-season if we play the way we have been.

Exactly, Why not?

Most important is to be at worst the 6th spot, avoid playing Wednsday, gives us 3 games instead of a brutal 4 in 4 nights.
Win Thursday night. Get to Friday and the kids are having hope and believing in themselves. With confidence anything is possible (hopefully nova is on the other side.), you win on Friday, and get to Saturday, the final.
Even against Villanova, your dreams are still alive. Just knowing if somehow you beat Villanova, you're in the NCAA tournament.
Man I'd take that in a heart beat. You know the kids would be going all out.

I love the enthusiasm but if we finish sixth which would be a great accomplishment we would need to win two games against Xavier, Butler and Creighton(who look great again) before we most likely would have to play Villanova. If we can do that then maybe we can make the Final Four like Syracuse did last year.

Yakwe drew a charge around the four minute mark that kept the Hall at a safe distance when momentum shifted their way. It was as big a play as any.

Drew three charges total. Eight points, three charges, three blocks, three rebounds, flummoxed Delgado much of the game. Haters gonna hate.

Lol. So we should ignore his rebounds stats for the year because of his well played game today? I like Yakwe, kinda made that clear, doesn't take away from the fact that he averages only 3.5 rebounds a game, down 2 from his freshman year. That's the point I was making.

One of the great things about being me is that I get to offend people I couldn't pick out of a line up. So while I'm happy that my reply made you laugh out loud, I don't know who you are and I don't know what you said and my hiLOLarious reply was not aimed in your direction. ROFLMAO smiley face smiley face smiley face. But since you asked, I'll answer.

Angel Delgado is a grown ass 22 year old man who's 6 feet 10 inches tall and weights 240 pounds. He averages 15 points and 10 rebounds a game. He's a sure fire first team BE player and in real life might be the BE player of the year, because without him SH would be DePaul. Probably he won't win it, but he probably deserves it.

Kassoum Yakwe - 19 years old, a sophomore who should be a freshmen, all of 6 foot seven inches and 210 pounds - played Delgado yesterday to close to a draw in what was one of his better performances of the year. Throw out the Nova game in between and in his last two he's scored 22 points, 9 rebounds and six blocks. That's pretty good. Not great, surely could be better. He seems to me to be playing with more confidence and I hope he's shed the funk he's been in and maybe turned a little bit of a corner. But then I'm an old softie with a unicorn glass of half full of rainbows.

It's strange in light of that performance to read a discussion of his deficiencies, what he's "terrible" at, what Division two school he should be transferring to. It's particularly strange to me to hear it from a guy who spent the entire summer and fall repeating the mantra "patience" whenever a discouraging word was heard in some discussion he thought everyone should "move on" from. That's the guy to whom I was referring, not you rawdawgnyc - btw kewl name bro - and to the extent that you took it personally, you shouldn't have. I was surprised to read that discussion in this thread an hour after SJU defeated a cross town rival at Madison Square Garden on national television in the now legendary Battle for Sixth Place because it seems so incongruent, because they won and the kid played well. Soon enough they'll lose and he'll play bad and then you all (royal) can shit on him: as the man said, patience. So I replied with what to me was a shrug: haters gonna hate. Because there were lots of things that might have come under discussion - good and bad - and many of them more relevant than how Yakwe will fare next year at CW Post. I don't begrudge you your conversation - I would never tell you to move on - but I did want to register my opinion, which is this, shrug not having registered:

What I think it is is that SJ has been down so long and its fans have been so beaten down that they are conditioned to enjoy failure. They associate nostalgically with Saint John's basketball, which has disappointed them their entire lives. So that when something good happens they reach for the bad because the pain makes them feels pleasure. It's like cutting, there's just less blood.

My bad.. The reason I thought it was directed towards me was because in the thread, OLV72 was replying to me, then you replied to them, so I just presumed in the flow of the conversation it was directed towards me.. My concern is his regression this year, however I am not one that thinks he shouldn't be back next year.. I'm just hoping it's a bad year and he can regain form (which maybe by the numbers you posted he is doing so)... I'm kind of honored it only took me 1000 posts to finally get noticed by you.. Winky face, tongue sticking out face, big smile face.

Yeah thanks for pointing out who we'll have to play, guess we'll have to play some pretty amazing basketball huh?

Hey, if the kids want in the ncaa tourny then they'll just have to get it done. They're the ones of the court, so it's all up to them. If they want in the ncaa then I guess they'll have to win the B.E.

There are on this board a dozen guys called NYC something or red something with a picture of Marcus Lovett as their avatar. I couldn't keep them straight even if I wanted to. Me, I'm easy: I have a three letter name, a picture of Larry Fine affixed to the sphinx as an avatar and am singularly an obnoxious asshole. It would be hard to confuse me for anyone else. The rest of you not so much.

I too am concerned about his regression. I thought last year he was destined for greatness. Now I hope he becomes at least half of what last year he looked like he could be - which at this point is Willie Glass lite. On the bright side he plays hard, he has size, he has insane hops and he looks pretty jacked. Although nearly a junior he's still very young. He's also a furriner, and he has no natural position. Ideally he'd be a three, but he doesn't have the handle of a three. He's not quite big enough to be a four and five is out of the question. In addition he this year has displayed poor hand that he did not display last year. He is not a good rebounder, which it seems he should be with his size and athleticism. This year has so far been an enigma. At the risk of repeating myself, he looks like he's thinking about what he's been told he needs to think about, as opposed to doing what he's been told what he should do. There was a saxophone player called Charlie Parker who said about being a great saxophonist that first you have to learn how to play the saxophone and that once you do that you have to forget about how to play the saxophone and just play the saxophone. To the extent that that's true I hope Yakwe soon forgets how to play the saxophone.

Love the Charlie Parker analogy (a personal favorite), but I think Yakwe -- whom I like a lot and whom I've never knocked -- has a lot to learn about playing the game before he'll be in a position of being able to forget how to play the game.

Coming from one who would never join your fan club, that is a straight up, no sarcasm, GREAT post. Spot on break down of Yakwe and the Parker analogy fits him like a new suit.

Different interpretation, I suppose.

Thought Lovett played one of his best overall floor games of the season. The defensive effort on Carrington was incredible. He and Ponds have really upped the defensive intensity and pressure recently. Has been very disruptive and making it difficult to for opposition to get into their offense. We've been a different defensive team at times the last few games largely because of this.

Credit to staff for adjustments made in this game. Notably bringing doubles on Delgado from different areas all game, he didn't seem to get comfortable with it until late in the game.

I also thought good recognition from the staff that the Lovett, Ponds, Ahmed, Yawke, Owens combination was working and sticking with it in the second half. This is probably our best lineup right now and when Williams is healthy there is a little less foul risk with that lineup.

Incredible that we've beaten half the teams in this conference and have 6 wins with 5 to play. Congrats to players and staff.

I do that too. I get so invested that if one of our guys makes a mistake and doesn't look devestated, I want to send him home!

Doubt you'd make it past the first round of interviews anyway. It's pretty exclusive.

I am a fan but disagree about Yakwe. Think for a long stretch he was pouting. Just my opinion. Playing out if position def hurt him but he is basically a hustle and effort player who was not doing that. Hands problem is weird because didn't notice it last year.

Great job by Mullin limiting the rotation and mostly going with his 5 best guys. Though Amar game came out of nowhere. Guess he is good for one of then once a year.
I would Go with Owens / Yakwe /Ahmed with the two guards as starters for rest of the season.

I really like the saxophone analogy, as it fits Yakwe perfectly. Problem with Yakwe is he never learned to play basketball before being asked to play it at a high level. While many freshman have poor fundamentals, they have practiced moves starting on the playgrounds as kids and on through HS and AAU ball. Yakwe plays like a guy that is late to the game. His moves are all mechanical and lack any creativity or instinct. Compare that to Lovett or Ponds, who have great creativity, and can change their move in mid air and score despite being challenged by bigger players.

Yakwe's ball fakes are ignored, and while he can jump to the moon, he is easily defended as defenders know exactly what he is going to do. The lack of rebounding is more of a mystery, as are the bad hands. He's only 18 or 19, so improvement is certainly possible. I hope he stays, since you can't teach his level of athleticism.

Anyone who helps keep alive the memory of Larry Fine, the forgotten stooge, can't be all bad.

Back in the cretaceous period when Tony Jackson was our star player, those of us still in high school would take a ten pound weight, put a rope through the center and tie it, and tie the other end of the rope around an 18" length of two inch dowel. Hands alternating rolling toward you pull the weight up, hands alternating rolling away from you slowly lower the weight down. Hands alternating rolling away from you pull the weight up, hands alternating rolling toward you, slowly lower the weight down. Built not just strength but strength in motion. My more recent memory is that any ball Mo Harkless touched, was his and under control.

If only it was so simple. I 'm closing in on 80 and was leaving St. John's when TJ was arriving. I could have spent the last 57 or is it 58 year pulling ropes or what ever with little improvement. I would suggest the controlling factor is hand size,

To real fans TJ will always be Tomas Jasilionus.

Anyone who helps keep alive the memory of Larry Fine, the forgotten stooge, can't be all bad.

I thought the forgotten stooge was Shemp?

Yes! Larry was always a Stooge. Many connoisseurs are disappointed when they see Shemp because it means no Curley. Shemp was the forgotten Stooge and Curley Joe was the desperate twilight of the era, after-thought Stooge...

For the leader of the L.Ron Fun Larry Fine Sphinx Cult, you should know this stuff.
