Seton Hall Game

Some Seton Hall fans are not happy with the game being at CA, funny seeing how irritated some of them get.

It's fun watching delusional fans go off the rails on an internet message board.

Yeah! That would never happen on a fine, sophisticated site like redmen.com where sanity and order rule the day and chivalry thrives! :)

You have to agree with them on one thing. Carnessecca Arena is a 1950's dump even with the renovations. An oversized HS gyms is dead on accurate assessment.

Look at Cuse they got the dome and now they are tearing it down to build something newer and better.

Yes, we have the Garden but Carnessecca has to be demolished and built back up, its a running joke even for students and alumni. We are lucky to have Taffnner if not recruits wold probably laugh and run for the hills as soon as they see Carnessecca. Take a look at the IMG Academy's basketball court, that alone put CA to shame.

Syracuse plays all of its game at the Carrier Dome, and with their attendance can make a case for it. It actually makes no business sense to build a bigger arena on campus for SJU. If we ever are going to draw 15-18K per game it wouldn't be in Jamaica, it would be at MSG. So, where you may be able to make a case to build an 8K arena, the payback would be a much long time, since there are few games we would draw more than 5K for on campus.

They can re-build another 6k arena that is fine but they have to keep up with the times. You want a respectable team you need respectable facilities. You need to invest to win.

Unfortunately, with the remake of CA being so expensive, they are not likely to simply put up another 6 K arena anytime soon. I would have liked a new arena, but it is what it is I guess. A real seat would be nice at my age.

Why can't they have an arena as nice as someone like Binghamton? This was built ten years ago and seats 5,500 for basketball. More than half are chair backs. It cost 33 million at the time.

Time to put up or shut up. Team is lacking confidence and will struggle tomorrow. Seton Hall is playing pretty decent and will create big problems for St. John's. Will St. John's continue to fold like a tent once SH puts up a good fight or will they fight back?

Season looks bleak, program outlook looks bleaker, and another loss will certainly pull the plug on supporting the program any further this year.

That's interesting, as Lavin had specifically called upon Harrison to play the leadership role for the team heading into last season. We all know what transpired at the end of last season--but I got the sense that Harrison was trying to re-assume that leadership role this season.

I think D'Angelo was talking moreso of Gift leading by example. The way he practices, his demeanor, his effort.

Gift has a lot of maturity over the rest of the group.

That's a lot to put on D'Angelo.

My guess is that Lavin wanted D'Angelo to step up and develop the leadership of Hardy but not everyone is cut from the same cloth.

I agree but it's funny to hear Seton Hall fans make fun of Carnesecca Arena. We have a palace compared to Walsh Gym, their on campus arena. The 3 worst on campus arenas in the Big East have to Seton Hall, Providence & Georgetown. I don't think they can even play conference games in their.
i grew up 20 minutes from SHU. My first SJU game was there. I enjoyed the small intimate setting. That game got me hooked on college BB. Walsh auditorium was also the gym for SEton Hall prep.I was on the wrestling team and they were on our schedule,

Definitely don't want to play SHU @ MSG Next year...don't give Whitehead an opportunity to play in mSG outside of the BE tourney

back in the day only a couple of Big East games were at the Garden Syracuse and Gtown. The rest were played at Alumni Hall and there was never less than 6000 fans. I remember John Bagley and BC at Alumni Hall and it must have had 6500 people jammed in. The bottom rows had people sitting in the aisles.
Winning draws fans. Nothing else. Just ask the Yankees about their attendance prior to Joe Torre. 4,000,000 fans in the Bronx. Unheard of. Let the Johnnie's start winning like they did and it will be much harder to get seats and the cost will go up.

Binghamton is a state school. They were spending taxpayer money, not private money. If the reno of CA put all seatbacks in, I'm guessing that capacity would decline by 20-25%. IMO CA has nothing to do with our losing streak, and not important enough to discuss at this time. If you know someone with $50-60 million to donate who really wants a new arena, it will happen. If not, no.

Are you a season ticket holder, or do you watch games from TV? At every critical moment, it is Harrison who leads this team. It is Harrison who talks to the guy at the FT line, who drapes his arms around his teammates in a huddle and who does most of the talking. You can put failure to deliver in crunch time on Harrison, but not failure to lead. On the court, it's clear that his teammates like and trust Harrison, and that he is clearly supportive of them. GG may be a leader off the court, in practice, in the locker room, but there is nothing in his oncourt demeanor that suggests he leads this team.

I'm sure the Fire department would have cleared out the arena in those days. You'd have bleacher rows with 20 seats with 24 people crammed in, spilled onto the aisles. Annoying as hell, but a sign of exciting, winning basketball with a raucous crowd. It would take 20 minutes to get out of the lot. Read the accounts of Maravich at LSU. The arena was absolutely horrific, leaky roof and all, and located in football country. No basketball tradition to speak of, yet Maravich packed the place to the rafters. We aren't even talking about winning in that case - just brilliance never seen before.

Watching the Red Storm Report last week one of the primary issues has started to crystalize for me: there is a disconnect between the style Lavin thinks we play in theory and the way we actually play on the court. He referenced (paraphrashing) fast paced, increased possessions. Few things could be further from the truth.

Despite what he says the reality seems to be that Lavin likes a style and players who are "in control". That's probably why he doesn't like to press - too helter skelter. That's proably why he can't handle Branch for long stretches, and has gone away from Rysheed at times - they try to make things happen and in doing so turn it over sometimes, even though they might make 3x more great plays in the process. And that certainly seems to be why he likes PGIV so much, citing that turnover stat constantly, while ignoring the fact that he has again morphed into one of our primary ballhandlers but doesn't have an assist in 5 consecutive games.

All of this is surprising, because John Wooden, Lavin's mentor, said "If you're not making mistakes, you're not doing anything."

That summarizes where Lavin has us this year. Starting tonight, he needs to turn this team - and particularly its best players, like Jordan - loose. Make a mistake, get back on defense and don't worry that a sub is coming for you. Turn up the volume defensively to at least 3/4 court. If we're going to go down this season we may as well go down playing our game; the game Lavin talks about us playing but that we've actually played for maybe 10% of games so far this year.

Spot on. He talks about the team like we are VCU. The only thing they speed up is a layup if it goes to Sanchez or Pointer and that almost always results in them pulling up at the three point line out of control to reset. The reality is they get scared after pressing a few plays the first time they get burnt. You are going to get burnt in a press from time to time and you can't be scared of it. I have no idea why they think they can man press with the best shot-blocker in the country and then get surprised when he gets caught nowhere near the basket. Leave Obekpa/Sanchez back to defend the basket and go crazy with the other four. Even if the opponent gets the ball up court without a problem, they've wasted time and they are often flustered.
