Seton Hall - 2nd Game

If Whitehead played last game we probably win. He's a chemistry killer.
The only guard that scares me on SH is Gibbs. He kills us...and he's not playing.

The only other player on the roster that scares me is Delgado, but I think Dom will come out with a chip on his shoulder and we have a new weapon to keep him off the glass: Alibegovic. He inexplicably didn't play at all in the first match up.

Can you Marillac or.......offer me a review on Alibegovic - I like the little I've seen/heard but need to be informed as to what he's done and the prognosis for what's he's capable of during the balance of this season.
Thanks!

First and foremost, he's a freshman big man and they hardly can be counted on for much. To add to the troubles there, Amar has to also adjust the the American game simultaneously.

He's extremely physical...huge kid that can play both PF and some C. He has a very nice stroke from midrange and deep, although he needs more touches so he doesn't feel obligated to shoot every time he's open. Good footwork and very efficient with his movements getting into his shot or getting to the hoop or perimeter after setting a screen...defense is below average at this point and quickness will have to be worked on. 10-12 minutes a game with 5 points, 3-5 boards, and limited fouls would be enormous for this team down the stretch.

He can body Delgado...no doubt in my mind. He pins guys and boxes out better than anyone on the roster. He was bullying Reynolds for a stretch in the Xavier game.

I still don't understand why Amar wasn't given more playing time prior to conference play.

Maybe because he tried to win all of them for the first time.

@NYPost_Brazille: "I've never had a team with the number of injuries and setbacks and issues [we've had]" -- Steve Lavin #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille: Think Injuries haven't been quite as bad as Lavin described, but how many Big East games has D'Angelo Harrison actually been healthy? #sjubb

That is so weak Steve

You think possibly the reporter asks questions about injuries, then posts only the answer---making it seem like an unsolicited "excuse." Or do you think Lavin called Braziller up and offered the excuse.

I think Lavin has been pulling the "we're the youngest team in the conference" or "we suffered a lot of injuries" card for 4 years now. Time for him to put up or get out of town.

Next year he'll say "we're the youngest team" again, but in his 6th year there shouldn't be a reason for that excuse.
I do not want a coach who constantly makes excuses year in and year out.

People say "oh oh oh but if Lavin leaves then the next coach will be a mid major coach." Maybe that's true, but hopefully he'll admit to doing a bad job, if they have a bad year, and work hard to right the ship. I want a coach who is straight up, not a BS'er.

Look, kill me for going after our coach, but why do I go after him? Maybe because I care and I know in my heart that we should be there with Villanova and G-Town at the top. They are in D.C. and Philly, well SJU is in NYC. We belong with those two schools, yet for some reason we're not.

It has to change this year, some how some way.

Yes you have Steve. Last year, the year before that and the year before that.

Last year at this juncture he had never seen so many deaths and coffins and candle light vigils so from that perspective the health of the program is on the upswing.

evry team can make excuses for injuries and suspensions, illnesses, etc. Nobody, especially Johnnie fans want to hear about excuses from a team full of seniors. We've heard them for years. Sorry Lav, I support you, but don't go down that road

injuries didn't stop us from blowing the beginning of big east play

I happen to agree with Simplyred that the Lavin blurbs were in answers to inquiries and taken out of context. He did not "only" mention injuries but "other issues". Those other issues were partly Rysheed Jordan issues and other player issues on a very thin team. That thin team as we all know had to do with players not qualifying.
As for blowing the beginning of the Big East play, the common denominator was players not stepping up or not playing (Rysheed once again). In the Butler game at MSG Rysheed was not with the team.
Prior to that game Rysheed was having "issues " and plays half the game in the Seton Hall loss.
In Chicago Harrison stunk and Garrett hit 13-13 free throws. In the Georgetown loss both Harrison and Jordan never got on the team bus shooting 1-17. When your "star guards" are that inconsistent and unreliable it is a MAJOR ISSUE. We just don't like that the "issue" looks like an excuse.
Finally, when there are mice in the house and someone is laying out cheese for them, you have to question motives. Reporters are being fed negatives about Lavin by a few insiders. None of these reporters really actively follow game to game dynamics that have led to our current bubble status.
Those dynamics include the inconsistencies at guard play that cost St. John's three games: DePaul, Butler at MSG and Creighton. Those 3 losses may have cost St. John's an NCAA bid. 20-6 at this stage of the season would have meant a guaranteed bid. It is that simple.
As critical as I have been on Lavin over the past two years, those 3 losses that may decide his job were on his players and not his game coaching or made up excuses.

Lavin's dad passed away 2 years ago. Last year at this juncture lousy team chemistry cost St. John's the beginning of the Big East season. At some point the players performance needs to be evaluated along with the coach. My pet peeve has been Harrison not showing up for big games and Rysheed Jordan showing up for only half the games he plays. The fate of last season and definitely this one hinged on those two players. One joined the elite scoring leaders in the record books and the other does not like books. Hard on a 5 man team to overcome player obstacles like that regardless of the coach. Poor recruiting for depth has been our wizard's biggest problem not his tweets or what seems to be endless excuses.

The infrequently used bench is coming back to haunt him.

Don't want to continuously bash the coach. I just wanna make the tournament. Beat the hall. I don't care if it's an ugly win. But it needs to be a W

This game has danger written all over it. I predict we will win, but I don't think it will be easy, even if we were playing their cheerleaders.

I agree. If we were playing with their cheerleaders, it would be hard.

Geez, When did you cross over to the Maher side of the street...? :) This is a G rated site mostly.

I know red, I gotta get my mind out of the gutter.

I like your posts because of your fair
mindedness. Perhaps we can reach Appomattox or even nirvana between "the forces of good and evil" concerning Coach Lavin.
Perhaps we can have you seated between Grant and Lee serving as the federal moderator....watch out for the crossed Sabres!
:)
Thanks '72!

Seton Hall's cheerleaders are in the gutter?
Makes me think of the old Beatles song "Why don't we do it in the road?"
