Season Goals

What players from this year's roster can we expect to lose?

8-7 record in December and January with four wins on the road.

I'm hoping to see them continue playing over 500 ball the rest of the way, but three more regular season wins and avoiding a 20 loss record would be a nice recovery for this team.

We won't lose 20. We will win 7 or 8 in the conference which means we end up with either 17 or 18 losses, I think. If we lost 20 it means the roof fell in.

I think we beat the Hall in the rematch. We could win any of the other following games: Xavier Sunday (longest shot of the lot), G-Town rematch at home, Providence rematch at home, Marquette game at home.

I think we find 3 of those to get to 7 wins. 2 or 4 wouldn't shock me, but i still expect 3.

a tremendous accomplishment for this team would be to finish top 6 in the conference and not have to play on the first day of the BET. That finish would deserve much praise, despite the terrible non conference results.

Many may think it is not possible, i don't really either.. but it is something to root for. We are 7 games in, and we are currently in the 6th spot. A win tomorrow would make us 4-4 and right in the mix. That is what i have been rooting for for a couple of weeks now. Top 6 finish

Midway through conference play and we sit alone in 6th place...

at this point, retain any quality players ( Ponds, LoVett, and Owens ) and recuit our ass's off and pick up another seasoned coach!
May be easier said than done on all three counts. Players leaving for various reasons more prevalent than ever, solid recruits may not want to join a losing program, so far Mullin too stubborn to bring in a seasoned coach. Guess we shall see.

Mike Rice is just waiting to be hired and would bring a player or two to the table.

Through 9 BE games we are 4-5 which given some of our play in December, is better than a lot of us expected. There were some wonderful wins (Butler and Providence) and some woeful shellackings (Hoyas and Nova) but here we are at the midpoint and we have five at home, four on the road left.

Our D is still a huge issue but at least last night will have given our young team a badly needed boost. I see us going 4-5 in the second half.

Xavier - L
Marquette - W
@ Nova - L
The Hall - W (payback)
@ Butler - L
@ Marquette - L
Hoyas - W (payback part deux)
@ Creighton - L
Friars - W (we win another close one)

That leaves us 8-10 in the BE. As a reminder, we won one stinking game in the BE last year... We may not be improving at the speed of light but we are improving...

Butler is a great team but IMHO as a matchup our most winnable game. G'town and SH are the toughest matchups. The reason I say that is having watched them vs us, Depaul and SHU, they are a great defensive team but can have a tough time scoring even after some masterful passing and ball movement; don't have a dominant inside presence even though they do have an advantage and the speed advantage that Lewis can give them against other teams, we can negate. If we can play our B game offensively and A game defensively we can beat them. SHU lost last night but they put in the effort and were going hard after loose balls. In addition to favorable matchups in size and athleticism, they just play a lot harder than our guys, are more mature and I don't see us beating them this season. I like how we matchup with Nova better than SHU or G'Town but Nova has an exponential advantage in maturity and discipline and at least two go to scorers that Butler lacks.

I hope we can bring in some big men with bulk and an attitude for next year.

It is ironic that SH & GT both have mediocre PGs. That said, both teams have strength/size advantages over us for sure.

I would like to see the refs call a tight game when both of these games come to the garden. It would be an advantage for us if these teams can't be as physical on D

Back in 6th after tonight. Keep fighting for that first round bye
Finish 7th and get DePaul first and avoid Nova in next round (not that 6th wouldn't). Not sure much difference between playing second or third place team.

If we're trying to pad our win total for an at large bid, I'd agree with you. When you're hoping for a miracle (win the BET), I'd rather not have to win on four consecutive nights. A first day bye, a lucky win on the second day, and an opponent that upset a better team on the 3rd day, and anything can happen in the final (see SHU last year).

I'm not as concerned. The flip side is that with a 7th place finish we likely play a more winnable 1st round game. Winning ANY BET game would be a great achievement in their path to respectability. My preseason goal was 12-18 overall and it appears we will hit that or better which at this point has made this a good season. Throw in the fact that right now this is Mullin's team with him firmly in control and it's reason to be satisfied

Might be healthy for some folks to go re-read the first few pages of this thread. You can't get too low after losses (especially close ones), and I wouldn't get too high after a good win, either. It's all about the process, which is headed in the right direction IMO.

Just gotta keep it going and add some pieces (perhaps easier said than done, but let's be optimistic about it) and SJU could very well be on the road to relevance again.

Really the only difference between cautious optimism(where most of us are at now) and being complete ecstatic about the season are those 2 losses to LIU and Delaware St. Those types of games are not uncommon for young teams to have to deal with and I don't envision it happening again next year. Could see 3-5 more wins out of this season which would be a huge improvement from where we were in the fall.

agree to disagree then. I think we'd look more respectable if we don't have to play the first night. Plus, as someone else said, i don't care if its impossible, the goal should always be a BET championship. One less game increases those chances just a little bit more

Yes it's a shame that we didn't win 2 or 3 of the 5 or 6 very winnable games early in the year. Prob the difference between an NIT bid and no post-season.

OTOH the fact that the team has gone from those debacles (throw in getting blown out at Xavier and at Georgetown) to winning road games at DePaul and Providence, playing Nova and Xavier tough at the Garden, and collecting a nice win over Marquette just shows you the progress that has been made. Good job by the staff, and I am sure at the end of the year and next year they will use those early losses as a teaching tool.

I am very encouraged about the direction of the program for the first time in probably 15 years.

No offense, but the BET is irrelevant for us this year except to the extent it allows the players to get a taste of tournament play. It might actually be better for them to play the first night because that improves the chances that they get to play 2 games. And the more games they play, the better off they are.

This is not a one-year project.
