Rysheed Jordan

Rysheed (or his minions) started a Go Fund Me account, presumably to pay for his impending legal bills:

goal is 75k, 0 donations thus far... I find it as amusing as i do disgusting

It's horribly sad, is what it is. Kid is so messed up and it doesn't seem as though there's a bottom in site. I wonder if there's a substance abuse problem also? It certainly wouldn't surprise me. As least that might explain some of the seemingly irrational behavior with the robbery and the chase. And maybe, just maybe, if he deals with that then he can get his life back on track before it's to late.

It is so sad but not overly surprising when you think about it. His entire life he was surrounded by people whom I imagine told him he would make millions playing ball. When he dropped out of school in spring 2015 he probably still believed the same. After getting cut from the DLeague a terrible reality must have started to sink in. Was working at Burger King ever an option for him ?
Tragic the society we live in.

When Rysheed dropped out of school, he was too late to enter the NBA draft
He had to know that he couldn't make millions, at least not in the short term
He wouldn't have made millions in the D League nor in Europe
He made a big mistake when he decided not to come back to St John's
This is a kid who had no interest in going to school
St John's was to be an apprenticeship for him to prepare to play pro ball
Too bad - what a waste of talent

Somewhere in this story lies the mockery of the one and done mentality of college basketball.

Every season, a Rysheed Jordan and dozens just like him expect to play one season to audition for the NBA and then be off to a high paying career. In his case, by year 2 he never bothered to put in a bare minimal amount of work to stay matriculated, because even as a sophomore, he felt the NBA would come calling.

The NCAA should allow kids to keep their eligibility even if they decide to get an agent to explore their draft likelihood. As long as no cash is exchanged, there should be nothing wrong with it.

Not sayin that Jordan doesn't carry the full burden of his actions, but I am saying the current college system perpetuates this one and done or two and done mentality. Our conjecture even fuels that here.

Some people are just lost causes. No one is arguing that he came from a tough situation. But to be fair, how many chances do you need to give someone before they start taking ownership of their actions? RySheed wants to say we know his story. Ok, I get it. Mean streets of Philadelphia. I also know you got a full scholarship to a great school. That you had the opportunity to play D1 basketball on national TV. That despite acting like an idiot all through college, the coaching staff bent over backwards to look the other way. You completely skipped going to classes your last year cause you had an irrational thought that you were ready for the NBA. And then didn't want to do the work to clean up the mess you made.

I'm a sympathetic person to most people, but after awhile come on. I know a lot of people that came from bad backgrounds who knew the difference between what to do and what not to do. I hope for his sake this is a wake up call and he cleans up his life. But personally I subscribe to the belief that once a moron, always a moron. in the end, people don't like to change because change is hard.

Doody, in my 51st year working with mental illness and substance abuse, I would suggest that depression and trauma have a lot to do with recovery outcome.

Looks like Sheed's lawyer might need to offer his brother Jesus to the Chinese team to try and collect that salary.

Probably not my place to comment on this but it rubs me the wrong way to have anyone affiliated with the University, priest or not, lend any support to this clown. School should be distancing themselves as far from the situation as possible.

Sorry but I see it very differently. I am glad Father Rock was there. The school and Father Rock did the right thing. I am of the opinion that we let this kid down in a major way. We knew he was a problem child long before he set foot on campus and if the people in authority cared one iota a support system would have been put in place to keep him on campus, to assist him socially and to assist him in the class. None of the above was done. It cost us badly this season and it cost Rysheed terribly in the game of life.
A court appearance by a school priest is the very least we could do for Rysheed.

The school gave him an opportunity of a lifetime to get a free education and showcase his basketball skill. They don't owe him anything.

If Father Rock is appearing as a character witness, then I assume he's had sufficient interaction with Rysheed to be willing to intervene on his behalf. None of us really know how much help the school tried to give him. We can only speculate based on lack of result.

I agree North. As the spiritual advisor, regardless of a player's faith, Father did what he had vowed in his faith. The previous staff also failed miserably in reigning in Mr. Jordan when he pulled his hijinks over two years. However, this young man has no one to blame but himself for his faikures. When Mullin was named head coach on March 30th Rysheed had already stopped attending classes. There was nothing the previous staff could have done. He never bothered to take finals a month after Mullin's hire so even his promising to return was a ruse. He was cut in the D league for pulling the same crap he got away with at SJ. They pulled the trigger. We should have done the same.

I might agree if Jordan was simply present at the drug deal gone bad, was not in possession of a firearm, and decided to fire it. He's lucky he's not facing a homicide rap.

Don't we have academic advisors specifically assigned to D1 athletes? Doesn't the head coach get periodic reports as to whether a kid is in class? You can argue the merits of whether allowing him to go him to Philly in season on more than one occasion was to help him, or simply try to keep a wild kid on the roster.

Trying to blame the school for not investing more in a social experiment of a kid who had no interest in being in college is a lot to ask. If you go that route any athlete who gets into any problem whatsoever can use the defense that the school should have offered him more assistance to keep him on the right path.

Lavin shouldn't have coddled him but unfortuntalty we were short handed because of Lavin. Even if Lavin pulled a D'lo on him the kid was in no way mature enough to do what D'lo did. This is why I appreciate D'lo even more as a human being for making the right choices

I still like Jayson Williams so I can forgive people for what they have done but I pretty much have no feeling for Jordan whatsoever. Hope things work out for him but if they don't I don't care

The school owes him nothing.

The report said that Sheed hid the gun in the backpack of a 13 yr old and walked the kid home.

At what point do we stop making excuses for people?

Sheed made his own bed. He has turned down every hand that fed him from SJU to a D-League team.

He should've sent his pro-team Chinese delegation team to back him.

A lot of dirt has gone on at SJU. No need for the school to actually shovel this one back onto themselves.

not to mention he was involved in a drug deal. Drug dealers pollute our worst neighborhoods with no regard for the trail they leave behind. This thread is great - I've gone from hoping he isn't dealt with harshly to hoping to scores his next 10,000 points in the prison rec yard.

I haven't seen anybody be wrong in this thread. How you feel is how you feel. I ran a program that taught people in drug recovery how to do drug counseling with people who also had major mental illness. My students included several former NBA draft choices, all NYC, and all NYState ball players. This board has been my vacation from the horror of damaged lives for 18 years and the Rysheed situation blows up the safety of being here instead of there.

Probably had the talent if he worked hard to cash in on the millions of dollars being handed out by the NBA. Instead faces significant prison time shooting at someone for drugs and or a cell phone. SMH :(

Why does this post constantly show up regarding this kid! Does anyone really care what he does, or where he goes! He is not worth the time to make a post!

Obviously many posters do care about him and Obekpa , irrespective of their reasons why. I strongly suggest that you avoid reading anything you find unpleasant as opposed to calling posters out. No one is breaking any forum rules.
