Hey, that's an amazing recollection. I had seen Bird make that pass prior to Mullin doing it. It almost isn't a pass, but receiving a pass and without catching it, in one motion redirect it to a wide open teammate. About as spectacular a pass as can be made, and obviously requires a ton of skill.
Those were the days when you'd come into work on Monday and all the sports guys wanted to talk about what St. John's and Mullin did over the weekend. Maybe a return to those days isn't that far off.
Mullin did base his game somewhat on Bird, and also I believe on John Havlicek, who was his idol. (I believe Mullin's pro number 17 is because it's the number Havlicek wore).
When Bird acquired Mullin from the Warriors for his Indiana Pacers, Bird remarked, "The player he reminds me most of, is me". I worked in East Harlem in those days, and guys from Harlem who had nicknames for everyone (Pearl Washington wasn't Pearl, he was PacMan) called Mullin "Little Larry Bird".
