Rutgers, Thur., Nov. 19, 7PM, FS1 & WMCA 570 AM

Sima: young, smart, long, skilled, unselfish & knows the game. Knows how to let folks clear out in post so he can make a move or pass, has a nice stroke, gets ball to teammates in proper position & very intelligently avoids fouling at key points. He played major minutes last night, but still ran the court entire game. Early in season, but what a blossoming, well schooled, talented big man we have.

I suggest watching the team this year the way you would watch a 5 or 6 year old basketball game. Fear the worst, hope for the best, be happy whenever anything good happens and just hope no one gets hurt.

Should get him the ball more

For years we've lamented, "How come teams like Syracuse always get the 6-11 guys who can actually play a little and we don't?" We've got one now, with more to come - a lot more is what I'm feeling.

Sadly the biggest key to that equation is Lovett and he's out. If he was in he would open up the game and move the pieces around in a way Mussini can sit outside and be a threat, big man cheats out, Mussini while not a true point can make a nifty entry pass to a now open Sima and boom.

offensively, he is what I hoped Obekpa could one day become

By the way, after thrashing us in an exhibition game, St. Thomas Aquinas College record is 2 - 1, with wins against St. Michael's and Felician and a loss against St. Anselm. Important information, no, but if we were 0 - 3 after that loss, no one here would be surprised. Although, we'll most likely be a punching bag during Big East play, I think we can all agree that we see glimpses of something bubbling or a Storm brewing.

I was hoping CO would develop quickly. Olajuwon was playing soccer at age 15, and developed into an NBA all time great. CO is fundamentally inept on offense, and we celebrated almost every basket as a breakthrough.

Yes no point guard hurts but he still needs to touch the ball more, it is not like they are double teaming him. Speaking off double teams, Ron needs to be in the game with Mussini at all times because we do not have any other capable ball handlers. Felix might be the third best guy

WOW, first of Felix made up for his missed FT's by committing a foul and not getting called for it.

Next, I don't know why the announcers were killing Jones for going for the lay up. There was a guy right behind him he was going to get fouled anyway for for the lay.

That being said 3-0 baby!

Great point on the Jones play

Not really. If he pulls it out and looks for some open space he's going to burn some of that 6.5 seconds and also still get fouled and shoot two. Then Rutgers only has say 3 seconds and its a much different situation.

Assuming that Jones, in the heat of the moment, in a role he doesn't do - handling the ball and the related decision making, and until ing a skill he doesn't appear to have - the same ball handling, I think he made the right play. I didn't at the time but I do now. A turnover could have been worse, leading to a break the other way in the helter skelter..

A heady player drives towards the hoop and then starts a big circle to the corner and back out, hitting the first wide open man before he can get fouled to stop the clock.

A dumbass cowers over the ball and plays cover up in the waning moments and gets immediately tied up, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

CJ didn't do a horrible thing, just not the best thing. If Mullin feels it was a bad decision, he will get schooled.

Incredible atmosphere at Coarseness last night. While I was disappointed we didn't come near to a sellout, the fans that WERE there were loud down the stretch. I hope we can get that more consistently.

Even waking up this morning I still had a hard time processing the fact that we stole that game last night. This team has shown an ability to dominate the last 5 minutes of the game. Last night, outscoring Rutgers 10-3 during that span. We definitely got the good end of the whistle during the 2nd half, but our guys have shown incredible resiliency thus far. Even if its only Rutgers, we lost to a D2 team by 34 points 15 days ago. Really nice strides being made.

Yankuba Sima once again showing he's the real deal, this time doing it against a bigger back line. He keeps it so simple but does some of those simple things really well, especially defensively.

You can tell Felix really embraced being in a roll where he's empowered. He's bought into sharing the ball and was just the right magical elixir to our rebounding issues. He plays so much bigger from the guard spot because of his wingspan and leaping ability.

Mvouika once again up and down, but love his leadership and fire.

We're getting better at breaking the press as a TEAM. We need 4 guys really involved in the press break and it's slowly rounding into formation. Feel bad that Mussini is playing a bit out of position, especially as he faces length and athletes he never faced in Europe, but it is what it is.

We need Durand Johnson to be more consistent offensively. Way too up-and-down for a senior.

Movement off the ball was stagnant for a lot of the night, but success was found throwing it into the post and really driving the rim in the second half. A true grind it out game.

Christian Jones was pretty bad for most of the game, but did some nice things down the stretch.

It was great to win it in front of Lavin, who was texting on his phone for much of the game and not paying attention to it, which is all too apropos for his approach here for the last few years. Nice to hear he was mingling with fans though, as that was always his strong suit and won people over with him instead of the results and effort of his actual work, or lack thereof.

Really hoping we can get Ellison and/or Darien Williams back. I know the lines used were "sore foot" for Ellison, but would he really be in crutches and in an air cast for that? A bit skeptical that was it, but hope I'm wrong and he's available for Maui or somewhat soon.

Overall, nice win and an even further indication of the culture that this staff has put in place with a roster that was assembled in only 3 months. Onward and upward...

Ron might be 2nd best ball handler. There was chatter when he signed that he had some experience playing PG awhile back. I just said on the other site though Felix might be the 2nd best option at point because he's much more athletic than Ron and breaking a press might pay off then.

Not a Max Hooper SJU jersey to be found in Beast's closet I would assume. :)

Noticed LoVett really into the game, as well as Owens. As much as this will be a challenging year for sure, I think Mullin has changed the culture of program in short order. Of course winning brings out positives. :)

I like real ballplayers, not zero dimension players oversold to us as one dimensional.

Nice breakdown. I will disagree (if you can even call it that) with one thing. I think having Mussini play the point this year -- when it is all about building a foundation -- will pay high dividends next year.

Mussini's experience adds another dynamic, quick guard with ball handling skills, to add to LoVett and Ponds next year is a great thing.

Mussini is getting an education. A crash course for sure but you can tell he is a good student. Next season we will have 4+ very capable ball handlers and Mussini will have been forged in fire when it comes to pressure.

Ron was the starting PG at Huntington Prep when he was there.
