Rutgers Exhibition

Just got back to the game and will provide thoughts as they come to me so forgive if not super organized.

Jenkins is very good in PnR and will be a very good but not great player at this level. Rutgers tough D was really able to neutralize him in the 2nd half and the OTs. He is a good floor general.

The talent is obvious with Sim but he won't be carrying the team out of the gate. Has a lot to learn on both sides of the ball but he will be an amazing player down the road, no doubt about it.

Alleyne is steady and a shot maker. Know exactly what we're getting with him.

Taylor is a menace on D and is a great rebounder. He's very long and lanky and moves very well for his size to stay in front of guys. Has a little bit of an offensive game, hit a big 3 in 2OT but much more of a slasher and asset on D. Was included in Offense/Defense subs at the end of the game.

Ledlum is solid but not a complete game changer. Wasn't great at finishing around the rim today but has high basketball IQ. May take a bit for him to adjust to the disparity from IVY League to this level. He was way more athletic than IVY leaguers and stuff he got away with at that level will need to be improved here. Very good rebounder and defender.

Soriano is still Soriano. Cliff definitely was in his head a bit as Soriano passed on a couple easy looks thinking Cliff would reject them. Needs to be more assertive in those situations sometimes but overall still very good.

Zuby was pretty meh today. Didn't really play at all in the 2nd half and OTs as Pitino leaned on Soriano the whole way and Soriano played with 3 fouls the whole time.

Dunlap is thin as a rail. Played decent minutes today but would be surprised to see him get more than spot minutes in big games in year one. Smooth offensive game though and definitely another guy that will be very good down the road. There was a point in the game where Pitino yelled "You did exactly what I told you NOT to do" at Brady when he was walking to the bench during the timeout which got a decent laugh from us.

Drissa played better than I thought in his decent minutes. Very active on D and on the glass.

Conway was the first guy off the bench and then didn't play at all. Pitino was yelling directions at him the whole time he was in. He's not going to get any minutes this year.

Ayo can't play at this level yet.

Overall the press really shook Rutgers early but they settled in. They are a well coached group. Knew their D was going to clamp down in the 2nd half and it did and again while Jenkins is solid he's not going to be a guy that is creating his own shot and scoring every time down the floor. Obviously thats where Dingle and Luis will be major helps.

Were solid defensively throughout but Rutgers has always been offensively challenged. No consistent defenses lapses from what I saw which is a positive sign. Again, Glenn Taylor Jr really helps on that end of the floor. Defensive rebounding was very strong and Pikiell's teams always hit the offensive glass hard so was very pleased with that. Taylor helps there too.

Tough to gauge them more as a team from this game with key guys like Dingle and Luis out but decent view of them individually as well as they overall systems on both ends of the floor.

Would have never known based on the crowd, coaches, players, refs etc. that this game was being played in October and didn't count. Everybody was into it, players diving on the floor and everything. Felt like a game in February.
I was there as well. Great summary!

Damn I feel like Curbelo. I just want to get some popcorn and watch those pressers each game now

I like the way this whole exhibition game worked out. Team played a decent level team without two good players. Even the Rutgers Coach (Pikiell) mentioned postgame that he thought the intensity of the game would benefit his team long term.

They get the experience of an overtime game and everyone (other than the injured players) played. Now you have two weeks of practice to drill on the mistakes and work to get things right. The result of the game is meaningless but the work and experience gained will be valuable.

great to see basketball at CA again.
Had to leave at the u4TO in the 1H ... (missed what turned out to be the most exciting exhibition everrr....) so first 16 min observations:

-Jenkins is the real deal. Lucky that he qualified and finished up at Iona. It seemed as though he could have gotten an open look every time down the court. Nice Form on his shot- looks to get everyone involved but can shoot it when called upon- will be nice to have that at PG this year.
-Kids looked poised, and their actions looked purposeful- you can tell theres experience out there.
-Great that Joel got to go up against Cliff, one of the better players he'll see at his position until BE play. Good reality check- cause honestly- Joel looked a bit soft. We know he isn't - so will be a good mental reset for him.
-Gonna have to hide Dunlap on D...

Obviously things changed in the 2nd half. But great to go up against a solid Major conf team before things count.

What a great introduction to our new players!
The crowd was very loud and into the game. Most of the crowd was made up of alums
and it was obvious our dorm students sleep in on Saturdays by their lack of attendance at this game. Geez kids! The game was only $5 for a cancer charity!

We had great seats in the corner and if I can figure out how post a picture you will see that our living legend Louie was there at almost 99 years of age while there were some seemingly foreign students playing Frisbee in the quad instead of supporting their fellow students. In the section were Brian M, Ron R., Zedon and some other legacy alums.

Rutgers is a very well coached team and their defense was excellent on the perimeter.
Clifford Omoruyi is probably the most athletic big man Soriano will face all season and for the most part, Soriano held his own ground. His offensive game was off today but he grabbed 16 monster rebounds, especially late in the game. Unfortunately he lost his temper at game's end that detracted the teams exchanging handshakes.

Both coach Pitino and coach Mas were very active coaching up the players. As most know both RJ and Dingle were injured and they will make this deep team deeper when they return. I think the only player not to get minutes was Cruz.

Can't wait for the MSG games!

Alleyne was 6 for 17 so if by shotmaker you mean "took enough shots that some were bound to go in", then yes. LOL (Obviously he made a big one)

Hopefully the days of SJU's points leader being a "volume scorer" are over. And Alleyne will never take 17 shots in a game ever again, so we chalk it up to it being a scrimmage and move along.

Cruz was out with broken hand. While we were indeed missing 3 players so was Rutgers including their best defensive player.

Daniss had his pocket picked once late in regulation time. At that point he looked exhausted. Had played virtually every minute as the playmaking pg and lead press on defense. After he lost that ball, Coach pulled him and gave him a short— very short— rest. Daniss came back in, tightened his handle and ran the offense flawlessly. He is very cool and plays high speed but under control. We do need to find a back up pg to rest him. Wilcher not ready. Hopefully Jordan can fill that role.
