Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

I still can’t believe he is our coach. Boy did all the stars align correctly for us.
Now I just have to get over that horrible call on Kadary who went straight up on that defensive play. My nightmares don’t end over that call. Still over 30 years and I wake up in a cold sweat over the Billy Singelton technical against Puke.
someone I think it was 114 I gotta check my text groups but in his speech right at the end he mentioned Looie.

I get how some might think he talks to much but I love listening to him. This was one of those from the heart type things. I'll see if I can find it

Maybe I told this story I forget. Last year during early practices Panther was there watching. When one particular practice was over and Panther I guess had gotten good feel for them he's telling me one day and I'm kinda summarizing

" Mike I've never seen a coach run a practice like Pitino. It's the most intense learning experience. He runs drills and scenarios over and over and over and over again ' That particular day Panther was in awe of the detail Rick put into an inbounding play. "

When Panther says ' Mike these are the best practices I've ever seen " that was a wow moment because who knows more about coaching than Panther. Then Panther marveled at Rick's energy and said something to the effect " Rick has no age he's going to beat guys no matter how young he's lost nothing in his age and gained wisdom "

In an environment where coaches are dropping out because of NIL transfer portal etc Rick adapts and thrives. Truly an ageless wonder and we are in for the best times of our fandom

How did he not win in 1987
Or 1996?
87 was the first year of the award. Bob Knight got it, on his way to a national championship.

It went to Calipari in 96. Tough for Rick to win any awards that year, as his Kentucky team was thought to be super dominant even before that season began. It was impossible for that team to over-achieve, which is usually what they give coach of the year for.

Watching a Pitino practice is truly a revelation. He knows exactly where all 10 players on the court are supposed to be at all times. No matter if he is up in the stands or on the court, he doesn't miss anything.

Nobody does it better.
