Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

I wonder how much NIL money from wealthy donors is funneled through their companies as a tax deductible business expense? While an athlete can bring some limited value to a company, did any Arkansas player raise revenue at Tyson chicken, or any SJU player significantly raise revenue at NoBull? As wealthy as these guys are, if they own companies they are not donating to NIL out of assets they've already paid taxes on.

I guess when you get down to it, revshare really does the same thing for individuals. Colleges really won't pay athletes out of revenue, but out of tax deductible dollars that donors contribute to the school. In that way the school does benefit by building their brand and generating revenue from successful sports teams that produce $$.

Still and all, it's all very murky. The IRS has only selectively gone after companies with questionable deductible expenses, but NIL really does fall into that category.

As a former CPA I could give an answer as to why this will get even easier in the near future but I want to avoid any inference of politics.

The Wall Street Journal had an article about Duke's Nil and the quirt way they raise and manage it.
Excellent article, especially this little tidbit right at the end of it:

But even before NIL, the school was accustomed to donors contributing enormous sums to the basketball team. Duke already had something called the Legacy Fund, created by Krzyzewski to endow the team.

The minimum donation for the Legacy Fund: $1 million.

Brooklyn Red posted how Pitino is a great evaluator of talent which made me remember an interview he gave last week. When asked what was the most important things in building a winning program Pitino replied evaluating talent and recruiting. When coaches are asked that question they almost all reply recruiting is number one.
You can tell how he looks ahead to see how does this recruit fill the need that he is looking for. It won’t always be that high school all American.

The Duke basketball team alone raised $33 million annually as of a few years ago.

Rick won the Naismith Coach of the Year. He also won the USBWA Coach of the Year, AP Coach of the Year (shared with Bruce Pearl), and now the Naismith Coach of the Year.
I still can’t believe he is our coach. Boy did all the stars align correctly for us.
Now I just have to get over that horrible call on Kadary who went straight up on that defensive play. My nightmares don’t end over that call. Still over 30 years and I wake up in a cold sweat over the Billy Singelton technical against Puke.
