Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

“We approached them and tried to negotiate what we thought would be a very fair deal and it didn’t go anywhere,” his agent, Evan Daniels, told The Post.

Clearly, SJU didn't see it as "very fair." But guess what? Pitino's still here. This is all posturing by his agent ahead of upcoming negotiations, and he can thank Zach for taking the bait and printing it.

In similar time periods what Pitino has done at St. John’s is similar to what Cignetti has done at Indiana. Indiana knows what they have and recently made him the second highest paid coach in the Big Ten(behind only Ryan Day) with a massive 8 year $93M extension. Cooley is rumored to be paid around $5.5M per season so Pitino should at minimum be paid $5M per season. Pitino needs to feel appreciated here and there is only way of accomplishing that. I don’t care how it gets done - Pay Rick what he is worth.

Considering what has occurred with the program since Pitino arrived the motivation for SJU to want this to continue as long as possible seems massive. And the current season is underway and not in jeopardy. Pitino is different than many his age but still mortal so all of this has been "on the clock" since day one. Enjoy what is in front of you and let the school worry about what comes next. If things fall apart again, we can all just focus on the Jets and Giants.

Oh.

I think we need to get him to $6m to make this go away forever.

Plus getting him that high means that when he retires, top-notch coaches at different schools would know there is $5m available to them.
Make Pitino an offer of $5.5mm and throw in a grandson to be named later coaching hire.

Easy for you to say, not that you are wrong. To me, it's disgusting what state schools, heavily subsidized by taxpayer $$ pay. In terms of Georgetown, their grads support the school with donations better than most non Jesuit schools (ND the exception). Here it's really a matter of capacity. School cannot keep going back to the well of a small group of incredible donors (not just and greater than MR despite his fantastic support of NIL).

With all that, the importance of Pitino to SJU is off the charts. He will get treated very fairly.

Look at him having an agent as not getting into a contentious negotiation with people he likes and works for.

All good at this point. He will get a nice bump.
