Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Have to give Pitino a lot of credit. Guy who rose to fame with Billy Donovan and Providence shooting threes and had the Bomb Squad on the Knicks is 18-3 and 9-1 in BE winning with D and without any reliable shooters. Not many coaches could do that.

Some of his best teams struggled from three. The Louisville national championship team was 214th in the country in 3 pt %. They were 274th the year before. Offensive rebounds, steals, assists, and blocks always strong with his teams, though.

Currently on KenPom, St Johns is 66th on offense and 4th on defensive efficiency which is good for 15th overall. I was curious to see if Pitino ever had a team similar to this gap in offense and defense and what the results were. In 2015 (two years after the national championship team), Louisville was 66th on offense and 4th on defense which was 17th overall. He went 24-7 in the regular season, lost the first game of the ACC tournament to UNC (team goes to the championship the next year and loses to Nova on the buzzer beater from Jenkins and then wins the year after that). In the NCAA tournament, they were given a 4 seed and he went to the Elite Eight and lost to Michigan State in OT.

This team is capable of all that! Let’s continue this great season!
