Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Ironically, if you want some glimmer of hope that kids can still be responsive to Pitino-like coaching, look 130 miles north to Connecticut.

This is type of profile is what we should hope is written about us next year and years to come. The players wanting hard coaching, everyone being on same page, etc.

Hard coaching is one thing, but if you watch Hurley on the sidelines, yes he's nuts, but it's all positive WRT his guys. It's encouragement, it's getting the guys involved, etc.

Also, they will never play for a coach who defends them to the refs more than he does. When you see that, how can you not play hard for the guy?

I am a Pitino supporter but must admit that the quotes he is giving publicly are kind of surprising to me. However, I think there is a method to his madness.

I think he is trying to set the tone for future recruits. Those who sign with us will know EXACTLY what he is expecting. Those who won't come because of what he is saying would not workout for him anyway, so this is his way of weeding out the weak. Hopefully, this helps him find the players with the personality that HE NEEDS to succeed. I think this is his way of making sure his next roster is filled with kids that match his personality (with talent).

Why do I think this? He tipped his hand at the post game presser when he was asked about the job that Coach Holloway is doing and he said, with a smirk, that he put together a team "to mimmick his personality of all tough kids. So they did a wonderful job without NILs being exorbitant. So it just goes to show you that it's not about NILs but it's about recruiting to the coach's personality."

He knows that most of these kids were hired guns for good NIL payments and those are not his type of players. Let's face it, those are the type of kids who will be all about themselves. Love him or not, but if they all had the mindset and toughness of Jenkins, we would currently have 19 wins and would be dancing. Does he frustrate me at times? YES! But without him, I really think we have 5 less "W"s.

Now, I know what many of you will shoot right back and say: HE RECRUITED THESE KIDS. However, he mentioned that he didn't have much of a choice and he had NO WAY to evaluate their level of toughness in such a short time period.

So, here is what I am doing (and I suggest you all should to save your sanity): I will wait until next season halfway through the conference schedule to truly know the state of the program under Coach Pitino. If this program is in the same rut then the game has truly passed him by and he will not get it done. Maybe I am just a pathetic optimist when it comes to this program, but I still think this man can and will bring us deeper into the NCAAs than anyone since the man who has his name on the court and building roamed the sidelines in that magical year that Patrick Ewing ruined for us!

Many of you know me, but in case you don't: I've been a fan of this program for more than 40 years. I bleed red and white. I have been a season ticket holder for many years and still go to several games a season. I will support this program until the very bitter end even if they lose every single game.
He who laughs last laughs the hardest.

May not like his recent commentary (I prefer to keep things buttoned up a bit) but don't count me in the group betting against this guy to get it right and in a big way

Play Jenkins and the young pups the rest of the way and then reload with some athletic guards and shooters (I pray for one Baylor Scheierman clone) in March/April

Not sure if I disagree with the leveling of those involved. Especially the players. You wanted NIL $. You think you "deserved" it...well you are like the rest.of the employees in the US. You don't perform you get called out. There are now higher expectations for you.

Mike Dunlaps final comment:

“So on point. Why would any player dig deep to prevail at end of a tough game now. Nothing I say will diminish how good Pitino is, call it a bad moment w/ presser, learn, keep moving. Coach said effort was there, good people...leave it there & light them up behind closed doors.”

I also send some apologies to Marillac who was stressing the lack of speed at guard position this year. Sitting at UBS yesterday I was thinking, Walter Clayton Jr. would have destroyed that Seton Hall double team of our guards at top of key all day long.

Alleyne and Dingle way too slow for Big East play. Alleyne better suited for smaller specialist role like at UCONN and not guarding other teams lead guards

So I'll just say this and ruffle some feathers and be called ageist but it's true.

As people get older and especially as they get into their senior years, they give fewer and fewer fucks about what people think of them until they eventually give zero fucks.

At that point there is no filter. And they say whatever comes into their head no matter the time, place or audience.

This is the byproduct of having a 71 yo coach.

We should all be comfortable about scathing commentary out in the open. Remember when Repole went on Francesa’s show and went scorched earth on the university?

The reaction to that was split at that time. Some wanted it kept in house, while others loved the fact a guy with that much money and clout doesn’t have a filter and speaks his mind. No matter the outcome.

Yea I think the difference between the two scenarios, for me at least, is pitino deserves some of the blame for the way this season has gone. Whereas Repole was more of an outsider looking in at that time. And I just hate how Ricks making it all about the players. Players he signed off on adding.

Even though he’s correct - a lot of our players are slow. I’ve been bitching about our inability to stop opposing guards for weeks. Even though he is right about that assessment, as the coach your job is to put together a gameplan that can put the roster in the best position to succeed.

I don’t feel he’s done that this year. Instead, he’s taken the stubborn approach of just giving up on them and being like “nope they can’t play my style”

Just made me realize that pitino is not a “win at all costs” guy. He’s a “I want to win but it has to be MY way” guy

And as a HOF’er I guess he has a leg to stand on and results to back up that “his way” works. But that doesn’t mean he has to be a douche and throw all his kids under the bus. I don’t care if they’re getting paid, it’s still an awful look

Repole was not an outsider. He was making a point about how he was being treated. But again, the program was irrelevant at the time and outside of us, no one cared.

Not disagreeing with you. Just trying to point out that with a high profile coach, we suddenly get attention, especially if it is bad news.

As I mentioned earlier, I think everyone will be better off with an offseason to reset and focus on roster building correctly and more methodically since Pitino does not have to jump in late.

I think Coach has learned a LOT this season and will not make the same mistakes regarding who he recruits. We will be a top 20 team next season. You heard it here first!
