Rick’s Targets

That coming from a mostly positive poster that is never combative.
And what exactly is both sides?
WHO on this board has claimed to be anti Pitino.
The only issue is if you are going to blow up a roster most expected a clear upgrade. People get invested in the kids and with all being jettisoned, names coming back are upsetting.
Larry, we don’t know yet if it’s an upgrade or not because the roster is not complete and not one game has been played yet. The roster might not seem to be an upgrade but Pitino is bringing in kids who are conducive to his style play and fit his program. The results might wind up being far better. We don’t know.

Nah. I’m not buying it. There has been way too much certainty that this is all wrong, there’s no blue chippers, we’re the Gaels and on and on. Now with the pushback it’s being tempered with medium concern. The only point is you have to wait to see what ends up on the court and how it works in October and beyond. Our coach has a track record that no one can touch. He’s done it without getting the top players every single season.
When the hell did Pitino ever not have top players? 😂 He basically had an A-10 roster in the MAAC while at Iona and always had 5-10 top 100 guys at Louisville. His UK stint was just an embarrassment of riches.

This is where the pushback is. Pitino has/had his reasons for 'blowing up' roster!! He actually made those very clear at the press conference... yet posters (like you) continue to argue a point that you have no first hand knowledge of. Last years roster was shit!!! we've won nothing yet the constant crying about losing players that people bitched about every single game is a JOKE!

Who are you really upset about losing?
Wusu - please
Jones - please
Curbello - pretty please
Pinzon - please
King - please
Stanley - please
Posh - Maybe (but for all the good things he did - you can point out all of his deficiencies and btw - he choose to walk)
Storr - Maybe (probably most potential of the whole group - decided he didn't want to conform to new coach philosophy and walked)

In regards to the new players... we shall see if results are same, better or worse. I for one am ok with Pitino building a team that he is comfortable with and will actually enjoy coaching.

You proclaim to want to move away from almost 40 years of irrelevance... hire a hall of fame coach... and then actually complain from day one on how he is running the program??? FOH

ok so lest take the time out here and compare the stats from the kids that left to the kids that came in. Take into consider their height and weight as well. I am one to believe it is an upgrade. Plus if all of our former players were that talented, only one is playing at wisconsin. The rest of the schools they landed at arent big time schools. (unless posh is confirmed to goto hall). My point is simple, addition by subtraction. No head cases, fresh start. Honestly not one of us has seen any of our recruits played unless you watched the iona games after pitino rumors started. RELAX! Anderson with our old team next year would be worse. Pitino with his new players and the ones that remained will be 1000 times better

I get College is different now but I would like to have seen Storr, Posh and yes Jones return.
I think Pitino gets both of the last 2 rosters into the tournament.

1000% correct bullseyes. Oh no we lost Stanley. WHO? we lost king? What did he show us, not much. We lost Posh, ok he didnt want to come back. Wusu, really? Curbelo gone boo hoo head case who wasnt that good. Not trying to insult the players we had, just agreeing that the players we had won NOTHING. Pitino blew it up. Um Van Macon one of his Assistants who was with last years team, dont you think he told Rick about the bad news bears players? Also remember father walking into the practice and was SHOCKED at what he saw? Come on what are we talking about here. Totally agree complete flush the team stunk had its issues. If your computer gets the blue screen of death do you a ) try to fix it or b) simply replace it . um B

Look, I am extremely happy with Pitino as coach and fully expect him to get the most out of whatever talent he has. On the other hand, I find it a little disconcerting and condescending that every time anyone raises the least concern with the recruiting to date they are jumped on as not understanding how team basketball works, putting too much emphasis on rankings, being Pitino haters etc. We all bring our own perspectives to the forum, but we're all die hard St. John's fans who maybe come at things differently. My view is we are still a couple of starters away from being a top 5 Big East team, but also very hopeful that may change.
Feel like there are two camps here:
Camp A- Love Pitino - love what he's building - give him time - let him cook - solid pieces so far.
Camp B- Love Pitino - feel like we've missed on some key targets - solid bench pieces - need some better players to compete in the BE

and then Camp A beats up on Camp B when they speak lol

Sounds like your problem is with Storr and Posh for not returning... they chose a different path than the one laid out to them by a Hall of Fame coach.

Jones? Please, he was the least efficient player I've seen in a LONG time. How was that going to work with Pitino? btw, he was the exact same at Depaul.

In regards to getting the last 2 rosters into the tournament, it's stupid and irrelevant - Pitino did not - does not want to coach those players!!! Period

Well, this is a 'family' fan forum, right? Lol.

I would take this team as constructed over last years team in a heartbeat. At least we finally have some snipers who can shoot the ball.

Watching last years team shoot the rock was horrific. You had to look away and have sympathy for the backboard.
Again, lady year’s team not the benchmark. I’m just going to keep pointing this out

Can't speak for everyone else, but my immediate expectations were a pair of top-100 recruits in the '23 class and 3-4 high-impact transfers for the upcoming season. Don't think that was/is asking for too much. But hey, maybe I'm greedy.
It is asking for too much because less than 8 top 100’s that are uncommitted and still being fought over. 3 of those 8 are MgBako, Demary and Gardner who passed.

You’ll see a lot of upperclassmen transfers for this class, but 24’ is where it should get fun. There simply are almost no top 100’s left, and the ones that are, we are trying to land like MgBako and Demary.

Compare it to his peers like Duke and North Carolina. St. John’s is not a comparison with Louisville and Kentucky. Providence went to the final four with Billy Donovan as their point guard. Fairfield wouldn’t take him in a transfer 2 years before. Russ Smith was a 3 star recruit. Won a national championship at Louisville. The rest of those teams rosters weren’t filled with star players either. Again, besides the point. I give up

For me the most annoying thing is still bringing up the guys who left. I never trashed Mike Anderson once, never talked about potential replacements during the season or until he got fired out of respect. He lost control of the program according to the school. The guys on the team were the ones who quit on him and therefore the team. Pitino got hired, kept an assistant on board who saw the whole thing first hand. The three guys who were kept you can assume were not the issue; meaning they didn’t quit on the coach remember. Three more guys (with Gardner) were offered a spot back with no promises (Slazinski tweet). I’m guessing because their talent outweighed the risk (Posh & Storr). They all chose to go another route probably with more guarantees idk. All the other guys were either the head cases or maybe not considered good enough. That should be over and done with but a couple hundred or thousand posts later it’s still being brought up mostly by the same people. Makes it look like your trolling or something, which whatever it’s your life. But don’t cry when you get called out. You don’t know better than Pitino that’s a fact.

There really is a lot of complainers in here. three weeks ago oh no Rick has no signees. Now we have what 4/5? then its oh its St. John's Gaels. Ummm Jones last year came from Depaul who is worse then us. Ever hear of soriano 4 years ago no. And one of our new commits originally was slated for louisville, NOT Iona. Uconn is depaul? come on gang lets get our heads together. Rick is creating HIS TEAM OUR TEAM. Dont care where they are coming from. For the record if you compare what we lost to what we gained? I think we are definitely in the plus column. Is it an all star team? NO But whose to say that a kid cant be coached up? We sure know what happens when they arent coached (aka posh regress). So lets start bickering like old ladies here. Let Pitino do his job Support the players on the court and IM 1000% positive its going to be better then what we saw this year!
Let’s STOP bickering
What I think you meant.

Don't entertain 'em. If you decide to do so; choose your battles.

imo you are on the money, Money.
A lot of good already and most likely a lot more ahead after HC Rick Pitino gets his style and composition of team rolling.

I’m uncomfortable calling anyone the GOAT which I have in my posts. But what else can we refer to Rick Pitino as?
He’s just exceptional and likely will once again do what he does:
Recruit his players, and train his players the way he wants, and with these players:
Win.

I haven't gotten into this debate about "who to keep" and "who can go on their way" that continue to permeate the forum.

Personally, I liked a handful of players, but I was only (slightly) bothered when Storr and Posh left. We kept the best of the lot (Soriano) and the other players who left (out of the former two I mentioned) can very easily be replaced.

I sense the first two (particularly Storr, as Posh probably has already been replaced) mentioned will eventually be replaced in the coming weeks.
